The Water Framework Directive (WFD 2000) defines macrophytes as one of the biological groups required for the ecological assessment of European surface waters. Several
indices for macrophyte assessment have been proposed or are currently in use by different European states. As a first step
towards performing an intercalibration of these indices a common dataset was developed. This dataset contains abundance data
on 789 macrophyte species from 316 different lake sites in ten European countries. Various common species and genera were
identified as indicators of reference and impacted conditions within the dataset. Cluster analysis of macrophyte data, supported
by non-metric multidimensional scaling, indicated that clusters formed were more reflective of their source country rather
than lake type. This might be caused by differences in regional climate, biogeography, monitoring techniques, or a combination
of these factors. A total of six national indices were applied to assign quality classes to the lakes. However, this produced
results that often differed by one or two quality classes for the same site. We foresee that a more precise intercalibration
exercise is necessary, and it should be based on more detailed data considering both seasonality and the latitudinal differences
within the area covered. 相似文献

A fish – based index for the assessment of the ecological quality of natural temperate lakes was developed, in accordance to the requirements of the Water Framework Directive (WFD) 2000/60/EC. As a case study, 11 natural lakes located at northern and western Greece were selected. Fish surveys were conducted during mid summer to mid autumn in 2010, 2011 and 2012 using Nordic gillnets and electrofishing. Environmental parameters and anthropogenic pressures were assessed for each lake. Fish species richness, abundance, trophic, reproductive and habitat functional guilds were used for extracting a set of 107 metrics, meeting the requirements of the WFD. All metrics were initially tested as candidates for the index development. A stepwise linear regression of each metric against environmental parameters (lake area, altitude, maximum depth, alkalinity) and anthropogenic pressures (drainage area covered by non-natural land uses – NNLC, water total phosphorus concentrations – TP, Lake Habitat Modification Score – LHMS) was initially conducted for ensuring pressure-response relationships. Reference conditions for each lake were estimated by the hindcasting procedure and the ecological quality for each lake was expressed as the ecological quality ratio (EQR) by a value ranging from 0 (poor quality) to 1 (excellent quality). Two fish fauna metrics, the relative numerical abundance of introduced species (Introduceda) and the relative biomass of omnivorous species (OMNIb) were finally extracted as the most significant, responding to LHMS and TP, respectively. The final index was expressed as the mean values of the EQRs of these two metrics. The multimetric fish index presented herein could serve as a tool for assessing the ecological quality of natural lakes at broad geographical scale and generally, in the Mediterranean temperate lakes with similar hydromorphological characteristics. 相似文献

Sustainability assessment of biodiesel production is a topic of increasing importance due to the interest of governments to define sovereignty strategies and diversification of their energy matrix, and to set up the impact of biofuels production. In this context, this work aims to propose a hierarchical structure of sustainability assessment that integrates dimensions of sustainable development with principles, criteria and indicators (PC&I). The method employed to define the hierarchical structure was a comprehensive literature review, based on information search strategy and classification. About 400 documents were reviewed and 103 documents were ultimately selected, including laws, policy documents, certificates, directives and other normative documents and papers published in peer-reviewed journals. The first result of the analysis was the need to strengthen identification of the sustainable development assessment, adding the political and technological dimensions to the three traditional dimensions, social, economic and environmental, studied in this kind of evaluation. The second result was the proposal of a hierarchical framework for the sustainability assessment of biodiesel production, organized in four levels: the first level comprises the five dimensions associated with sustainable development evaluation, the second includes 13 principles, the third contains 40 criteria and the fourth level corresponds to a set of indicators that describes each criterion. Outcomes of this work provide a foundation for further discussion of sustainability assessments for biodiesel production and its potential application in specific contexts. 相似文献

Environmental flows and the European Water Framework Directive 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
1. Environmental flows is now a widely accepted term that covers the quantity, timing, duration, frequency and quality of water flows required to sustain freshwater, estuarine and near-shore ecosystems and the human livelihoods and well-being that depend on them.
2. The Water Framework Directive (WFD) of the European Union does not use the term environmental flows explicitly, but requires member states to achieve good ecological status (GES) in all waterbodies, which is assessed by reference to aquatic biology. Nevertheless, it is accepted that ecologically appropriate hydrological regimes are necessary to meet this status. Implementing environmental flows will be a key measure for restoring and managing river ecosystems.
3. The WFD explicitly requires stakeholder involvement, but this has been interpreted as largely a dissemination exercise by national government agencies. Stakeholders are no longer involved in negotiation over ecological objectives as these are pre-set in the WFD. However, stakeholders may be more involved in reviewing standards and agreeing to measures to restore river ecosystems to the status required by the WFD.
4. The U.K. has undertaken two major projects to set environmental standards for water resources (i) to define water abstraction limits that maintain a healthy river ecosystem and (ii) to define ecologically appropriate flow releases from reservoirs.
5. Implementation of environmental flows remains a major issue, but new ideas such as time-limited licences and licence trading are being tried. 相似文献

1. We analysed submerged macrophyte communities from 300 Danish lakes to determine the efficacy of different species, maximum colonisation depth (Cmax) of plants as well as coverage and plant volume inhabited (PVI) as indicators of eutrophication. 2. Most species occurred at a wide range of phosphorus and chlorophyll a (Chla) concentrations, but some species of isoetids (Lobelia, Isoëtes) and Potamogeton (Potamogeton gramineus, Potamogeton alpinus and Potamogeton filiformis) were mainly found at low nutrient concentrations and hence may be considered as indicators of nutrient poor conditions. However, species typically found in nutrient‐rich conditions, such as Elodea canadensis and Potamogeton pectinatus, were also found at total phosphorus (TP) <0.02 mg P L?1 and Chla <5 μg L?1 and therefore cannot be considered as reliable indicators of eutrophic conditions. 3. Submerged macrophyte coverage, PVI and the Cmax were negatively correlated with TP and Chla. However, variability among lakes was high and no clear thresholds were observed. At TP between 0.03 and 0.07 mg P L?1 plant coverage in shallow lakes ranged from nearly 0 to 100%, whilst at concentrations between 0.10 and 0.20 mg P L?1 only 29% of the lakes had coverage >10%. Cmax was found to be a useful indicator only in deep lakes with unvegetated areas in the deeper part, whereas the use of coverage was restricted to shallow lakes or shallow areas of deep lakes. 4. Overall, submerged macrophytes responded clearly to eutrophication, but the metrics investigated here showed no well‐defined thresholds. We developed a simple index based on species richness, presence of indicator species, coverage and Cmax, which might be used to track major changes in macrophyte communities and for lake classification. 相似文献

The requirements of the European Water Framework Directive (WFD), aimed at an integrative assessment methodology for evaluating
the ecological status of water bodies are frequently being achieved through multimetric techniques, i.e. by combining several
indices, which address different stressors or different components of the biocoenosis. This document suggests a normative
methodology for the development and application of Multimetric Indices as a tool with which to evaluate the ecological status
of running waters. The methodology has been derived from and tested on a European scale within the framework of the AQEM and
STAR research projects, and projects on the implementation of the WFD in Austria and Germany. We suggest a procedure for the
development of Multimetric Indices, which is composed of the following steps: (1) selection of the most suitable form of a
Multimetric Index; (2) metric selection, broken down into metric calculation, exclusion of numerically unsuitable metrics,
definition of a stressor gradient, correlation of stressor gradients and metrics, selection of candidate metrics, selection
of core metrics, distribution of metrics within the metric types, definition of upper and lower anchors and scaling; (3) generation
of a Multimetric Index (general or stressor-specific approach); (4) setting class boundaries; (5) interpretation of results.
Each step is described by examples. 相似文献

The interactions between sensitivity and variability of macrophyte and diatom communities were evaluated as a research support
of methodologies required by the Water Framework Directive. Slope and shading were identified as additional typological parameters
improving links between unimpacted macrophyte communities and running water types. Two other studies demonstrated indication
value of macrophytes for assessment of nutrient enrichment and hydromorphological degradation. The special exercises were
realized within the STAR project to evaluate sources of variability/uncertainty in assessment methods based on macrophytes
and diatoms. Sampling period and shading of the site were found as major factors affecting variability in macrophyte assessment
results. Uncertainty of diatom assessment is predominantly associated with selection of site, substrate type and taxonomic
identification. Further extension of indication systems and definition of macrophyte/diatom-specific typology of running waters
are considered as the main aims of subsequent investigations. 相似文献

The Water Framework Directive (WFD) of the European Union requires all member countries to provide information on the level
of confidence and precision of results in their river monitoring programmes to assess the ecological status class of river
sites. As part of the European Union project STAR, the overall effects of sampling variation for a wide range of commonly
used metrics and sampling methods were assessed. Replicate samples were taken in each of two seasons at 2–6 sites of varying
ecological status class within each of 18 stream types spread over 12 countries, using both the STAR-AQEM method and a national
sampling method or, where unavailable, the RIVPACS sampling protocol. The sampling precision of a combination of sampling
method and metric was estimated by expressing the replicate sampling variance as a percentage Psamp of the total variance in metric values with a stream type; low values of Psamp indicate high precision. Most metrics had percentage sampling variances less than 20% for all or most stream types and methods.
Most national methods including RIVPACS had sampling precisions at least as good as those for the STAR-AQEM method as used
in their country at the same sites; the main exceptions were the national methods used in Latvia and Sweden. The national
methods used in the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Poland and the RIVPACS method used in the UK and Austria all had percentage
sampling variances of less than 10% for the majority of metrics assessed. In contrast, none of the metrics had percentage
sampling variances less than 10% when based on either the Italian (IBE) method, which used bank-side sorting, or the Latvian
national method which identifies only a limited set of taxa. Psamp was lowest on average for the two stream types sampled in the Czech Republic using either the PERLA national method or the
STAR-AQEM method. Averaged over all stream types and methods, the three Saprobic-based metrics had the lowest average percentage
sampling variances (3–6%) amongst the 26 metrics assessed. These estimates of sampling standard deviation can be used to help
assess the uncertainty in single or multi-metric systems for estimating site ecological status using the general STAR Bioassessment
Guidance Software (STARBUGS) developed within the STAR project. 相似文献

The European Water Framework Directive establishes the need to define stream type-specific reference conditions to identify
“high ecological status”. Methods for selecting reference sites using a priori criteria have been proposed by many authors.
A review of these criteria revealed that the most relevant criteria for streams and rivers were those related to riparian
vegetation, diffuse and point sources of pollution, river morphology and hydrological conditions and regulation. In this work,
we propose 20 criteria that reflect the characteristics of Mediterranean streams and their most frequent disturbances for
the selection of reference sites in Mediterranean streams in Spain. We studied 162 sites located in 33 Mediterranean basins
belonging to five stream types. Of the locations, 57% were selected as a priori reference sites by having applied the proposed
criteria. Reference sites were identified for all stream types except for “large watercourses” which includes the lower reaches
of some rivers in this study area. This a priori selection of reference sites was subjected to validation using the macroinvertebrate
community by applying of an IBMWP threshold, which is considered to be an indicator of undisturbed sites in Mediterranean
streams. This approach determined that whole of this selection (100%) could be considered valid reference sites. Furthermore,
we identified differences in the reference conditions for each stream type on the basis of macroinvertebrate assemblage composition.
