The relationship between the strontium content of the outer layers of otoliths (an indication of recent marine, estuarine or riverine habitat use) and the strontium content of roe in ripe female brown trout Salmo trutta was examined in fish collected from the Pomahaka River and the lower reaches of the Clutha River, South Island, New Zealand. A close relationship was found between the strontium content of roe and the outer layers of otoliths. This finding suggests that spawned eggs collected from redds could potentially be used to track the extent of upstream spawning migrations by anadromous brown trout.  相似文献

Technological and theoretical advances over the past two decades have allowed researchers to quantify eggshell color in ways that were not previously possible. However, differences among studies in the timing of color measurements during laying or incubation and inclusion of data from inviable eggs may affect the results of these studies as well as conclusions based on comparisons among studies. To determine the effect of the timing of color measurements, we compared the color of the eggs of Mountain Bluebirds (Sialia currucoides) during both laying/early incubation and late incubation. We also assessed the influence of egg viability on eggshell color by comparing viable and inviable eggs from the same clutch. We found that all color metrics investigated (blue‐green and UV chroma, brightness, and hue) were significantly different between early and late incubation, and viable and inviable eggs. However, color metrics of eggs measured during early and late incubation and of viable and inviable eggs in the same clutch were correlated. Our results suggest that the timing of color measurements and the viability of eggs have important effects on eggshell color and, therefore, in future studies, investigators should always provide information about the timing of measurements and the viability of eggs measured. Our results also suggest that comparisons among studies where eggshell color was measured at different times and/or the viability of eggs was not determined or reported are possible, given that the color metrics of viable and inviable eggs and of eggs measured at different times in our study were correlated, but those comparisons should be interpreted with caution.  相似文献

Response of female Lutzomyia longipalpis Lutz & Neiva (Diptera: Psychodidae) to an oviposition attractant and/or stimulant associated with conspecific eggs was investigated in the laboratory. Females of two populations laid significantly higher mean number of eggs on sites with 160 eggs already present than on bare control sites. This response was lost when eggs placed on test sites were previously washed in organic solvents and distilled water. Age of eggs placed on test sites, 1-6 days after being laid, did not seem to affect the oviposition response of the females. Comparing effects of different numbers of eggs, positive responses were obtained when 80, 160 or 320 eggs were placed on test sites. No significant differences between mean egg numbers laid on test sites and controls were detected when batches of only 20 or 40 eggs were used.  相似文献

The calcium wave subsequent to fertilization of the egg is analyzed interms of an electrical equivalent circuit. The circuit consists of aswitch, capacitor, an inductor, and a resistor. The switch symbolizes aseries of chemical reactions initiated by the sperm the lead to thedevelopment of the calcium wave. Its closure signifies the onset of thecalcium wave. The capacitor and inductor represent the endoplasmicreticulum. The capacitive component of the endoplasmic reticulum controlsthe release of calcium ions while the inductive component regulates thesequestration of clacium ions. The resistor represents the inductor andcytoplasm and has very low resistance. The analysis of the circuit showsthat the period of the calcium oscillations is proportional to the size ofthe egg. The role of the eel Anguilla anguilla as a piscivorous species was investigated in a biomanipulation experiment in the mesotrophic Saidenbach Reservoir. The distribution and abundance of the eels were investigated by point abundance sampling, snorkelling and scuba diving. Also, the total yearly consumption of the eel population was compared with the standing stock of prey fishes and the production of roach Rutilus rutilus eggs. A restricted availability of shelter habitats at low water levels had no influence on the distribution of the eels during the nocturnal activity period. Fishes were consumed in low numbers but in high proportions of biomass by large eels. The maximum estimate of the annual consumption of the prey fish standing stock by the eels was 19%. Fish eggs were consumed during a small time period by a large proportion of the eels but the total consumption was <10% of the total annual production of roach eggs. By consuming small individuals of planktivorous fishes, the eels contribute to the biomanipulation programme in the Saidenbach Reservoir.  相似文献

Wet mass and water content of four lots of whole eggs did not change throughout embryonic development of rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss. Eggs in all four lots accumulated Na+. Eggs in lots 2 and 4 also accumulated Ca2+ and Cl-, whereas eggs in lot 1 showed no significant change in Ca2+ or Cl- and eggs in lot 3 showed no change in Cl-and a small loss of Ca2+. Although the Na+ content of embryonic tissues increases in the later stages of development, the yolk sac content remained constant, indicating uptake of Na+ from the environment. Na+ uptake by whole eggs was non-saturable, consistent with diffusion of Na+ across the chorion into the perivitelline fluid. Na+ uptake in dechorionated embryos was saturable, as was Ca2+ uptake by both whole eggs and dechorionated embryos, consistent with active uptake or facilitated diffusion mechanisms at the surface of embryos. Very low Ca2+ uptake rates in dechorionated embryos suggest that the Ca2+ uptake mechanism is not fully developed until after hatching.  相似文献

1. One at a time during the reproductive period of amictic females, oocytes fill with yolk and undergo a mitotic maturation division (oogenesis), are oviposited as single cells, and then develop parthenogenetically into females. Sexual reproduction in Brachionus and several other genera is initiated when amictic females are crowded and oviposit some eggs induced to differentiate into mictic females. Mictic females produce haploid eggs that can develop parthenogentically into males or be fertilised and develop into diapausing embryos called resting eggs. 2. This study examines the time when oocytes in amictic females respond to maternal population density. Is the fate of all oocytes in the germarium irreversibly determined during the early postnatal life of the mother, or is each oocyte labile until just before oviposition? In the former case, the probability of an amictic female producing a mictic daughter at any time throughout her reproductive period would reflect the population density she experienced while young and not that at the time she oviposited an egg. 3. Amictic females of two clones of a Florida strain of B. calyciflorus were cultured singly from birth at a low or high density (in a large or small volume) until about halfway through their reproductive period and then switched (experimental treatment), or not (control treatment), to the other density condition. The results indicate that the female fate of an oocyte is determined by maternal population density during oogenesis. Eggs oviposited soon after transfer from low to high density had the same, or a higher, probability of becoming mictic females compared with those produced by control females kept at the high density; eggs oviposited after transfer from the high to the low density had the same low probability of becoming mictic females as those produced by control females kept at the low density. 4. Control females kept at the high density were less likely to produce mictic daughters as they aged. This decline is not because of a decreased propensity of older females to respond to crowding, as older females responded maximally when transferred from a low to a high population density. 5. As oocytes in amictic females respond to maternal population density only during oogenesis, there is a negligible lag between the population‐density signal in the environment and the commitment to sexual reproduction. This minimises the obligatory two‐generation lag between this signal and production of resting eggs, and thus reduces the possibility that crowding will lead to food limitation before production of these eggs.  相似文献
