The plankton community, chlorophyll-a, heterotrophic bacteria and physical and chemical features of the Paranoá Reservoir were studied at monthly intervals at seven stations from March 1988 to March 1989. Thermal structure had a circulation period from May to July and stratification during the other months. The phytoplankton consisted of 76 taxa, was dominated by the cyanophyte Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii and attained concentrations ranging from 7,759,000 up to 98,160,000 org. l–1. The zooplankton consisted of 36 taxa and was present in densities between 8 and 8,056 org. l–1. In stations, or seasons with highly eutrophic conditions, there was a decrease in total phytoplankton and an increase in bacteria and total zooplankton. The results had spatial and temporal variations. Spatial variation demonstrated the existence of water quality deterioration at two or three sampling points. Temporal variation showed the influences of water column stability and the dry versus rainy seasons on nutrient concentrations and the planktonic community.  相似文献

The effects of reservoir aging on the phytoplankton community of amidwestern U.S. reservoir constructed in 1965 (Pawnee Reservoir) werestudied by comparing algal biovolume and species composition from April 1992through November 1992 to surveys conducted in 1968–73 and 1990. Meansummer total phosphorus, nitrate-nitrogen, Secchi disk depth, totalsuspended solids, chlorophyll a, and phytoplankton species composition datacharacterized Pawnee Reservoir during 1968–69 as a high nutrient,relatively clear water environment. Phytoplankton biomass was relativelylow, consisting mainly of cyanophytes and non-flagellated chlorophytes.During 1970–73, water clarity was poor, total suspended solids werehigh, and total phosphorus was lower, but was still greater than 100 µgl–1. The 1970–73 phytoplankton biomass was high and wasdominated by cyanophytes. Mean summer total phosphorus remained >100µg l–1, water clarity remained poor, but phytoplanktonbiomass decreased significantly during 1990–92. The dramatic drop inchlorophyll a and low mean volatile suspended solids indicated thatinorganic suspended sediments, rather than phytoplankton, accounted for themajority of the turbidity in 1990-92. In addition to lower phytoplanktonbiomass, community composition shifted away from buoyancy-regulatingcyanophytes toward flagellated chlorophytes. These data suggest that asreservoirs located in agricultural watersheds age, (1) inorganic suspendedsediments have a significant effect on the light environment as well asphytoplankton biomass and species composition, (2) the control ofphytoplankton biomass and species composition shifts away from nutrients tolight and suspended sediments, and (3) there is a 1–2 year lag in theresponse of phytoplankton biomass to maximum nutrient loading during thetrophic upsurge period. Thus, sedimentation has been shown to be a primarydeterminant of plankton and benthic macroinvertebrate community compositionas Pawnee Reservoir aged.  相似文献

The influence of zooplanktivorous fishes on the plankton community and water quality of Americana Reservoir, Brazil was studied experimentally in 4 floating enclosures during the dry seasons (July–September) of 1982 and 1983. Two enclosures were stocked with adult fish (Astyanax bimaculatus in 1982;A. fasciatus in 1983) at near maximal densities measured in the reservoir upper surface waters (35 m–2) and two were fish-free during each experiment lasting about one month. Marked differences were evident between the fish and fish-free enclosures after a 2–3 week period in each experiment, particularly with respect to water transparency, phytoplankton biomass, and zooplankton abundance as well as species and size composition. By the end of each experiment water transparencies were lower and phytoplankton biomass higher in the fish enclosures compared to those without fish. Also at that time Rotifera were the prominent zooplankters in the fish enclosures and Cladocera in the fish-free ones. Larger or more conspicuous species of Cladocera asDaphnia gessneri, D. ambigua, andMoina micrura were present in the fish-free enclosures but not in the fish enclosures. The interactions between fish predation, zooplankton grazing, phytoplankton biomass and water quality conditions are discussed in relation to eutrophication of a tropical aquatic ecosystem.  相似文献

The effect of phosphate (PO4 +3) and pH in regulating nitrate (NO3) and ammonia (NH3 +) uptake by phytoplankton was investigated in two Oklahoma lakes using 15N tracers. Addition of PO4 +3 above ambient concentrations had a negligible effect on the rate of uptake of NO3 or NH3 +. Manipulation of pH of lake water had little effect on uptake of either NO3 or NH3 +. A correlation analysis suggested that NO3 is not used by phytoplankton when NH3 + concentrations exceed about 210 µg NH3 +-N(1)–1.  相似文献

The relationship between heterotrophic bacteria and phytoplankton in the epilimnion (0–10 m) of hypertrophic Hartbeespoort Dam, South Africa, was examined by statistically analyzing three years of parallel measurements of heterotrophic bacterial activity (glucose uptake) and phytoplankton particulate and dissolved organic carbon production. Algal biomass ranged between 4.0 and 921.1 mg Chl a m-3 at the surface. Primary production varied between 69.5 and 3010.0 mg C m-2h-1 while algal production of dissolved organic carbon (EDOC) ranged from 2.5 to 219.2 mg C m-2h-1. Bacterial numbers reached a summer peak of 44.23 × 106 cells ml-1 in the first year and showed no depth variation. The maximum rate of glucose uptake, Vmax, reached a peak of 5.52 g C l-1h-1. Vmax, maximum glucose concentration (Kt + Sn) and glucose turnover time (Tt) were usually highest at the surface and decreased with depth concomitant with algal production. At the surface, Vmax was correlated to EDOC (r = 0.59, n = 67, p < 0.001) and primary production (r = 0.71, n = 70, p < 0.001). At 5 and 10 m, Vmax was correlated to integral euphotic zone (~ 4 m) algal production and bacterial numbers. Glucose turnover time was inversely related to integral algal production (r = -0.72, n = 70, p < 0.001) and less strongly to bacterial numbers. The data indicated that although bacterial numbers and biomass were low relative to algal biomass in this hypertrophic lake, the heterotrophic bacteria attained high rates of metabolic activity as a result of enhanced algal production of available organic carbon.  相似文献

The periodical drawdown of reservoirs affects the phosphorus cycle. During the dry period the sediments are in immediate contact with the atmosphere, while part of them are resuspended when the water rises again. Experimental studies on the sediments of the Puyvalador reservoir (Pyrenees, France), which is subjected to a considerable drawdown every year, show that the quantity of phosphorus solubilized after resuspension of these sediments varies according to the speed with which the water rises, the preceding desiccation of the sediments and the origin of the water used in the experiments. The intensity with which the sediments are stirred depends on the refilling rate. The observed differences related to the origin of the water of the affluent streams are attributed to their initial ortho-phosphate content and their difference in pH. These variations related to drawdown make it necessary to take this important phenomenon into account when studying the solubilization of phosphorus in reservoirs.  相似文献
