Synopsis An approximately monthly sampling programme in Lake Ellesmere, Canterbury, New Zealand, from January 1974 to April 1976 yielded
487 eels. The stomachs were fixed in 10% neutralised formalin and the contents examined. Preliminary analysis indicated that
the mollusc Potamopyrgus antipodarum, the isopod Austridotea annectens, the mysid Tenagomysis chiltoni, the amphipod Paracalliope fluviatilis, the midge larva Chironomus zealandicus and the teleosts Retropinna retropinna, Galaxias maculatus and Gobiomorphus cotidianus together made up the bulk of the diet. The pre-ingested dry weight (i.e. the reconstructed weight) of the most important
of these prey species was obtained by relating the length of a digestion resistant part to actual dry weight in field collected
specimens. Regression equations for this relationship in each season enabled the reconstructed dry weight of each stomach
item to be calculated. In some instances reconstructed weight was less than the actual digested dry weight of the prey specimen.
In every case the larger value was used. This method is referred to as Combination Dry Weight (CDW) and is believed to be
new. These data, used in conjunction with the energy content of the species concerned, enabled the caloric dietary contribution
of each prey species to be determined. Comparison of relative contribution to eel diet between CDW and energy values calculated
from CDW and bomb calorimetry revealed large differences. Marked variations in diet between ⩽40 cm, 40.1–50 cm, and>50.1 cm
size classes were also shown. Eels ≤40 cm feed primarily on invertebrates and become progressively more piscivorous as they
grow. Eels >50.1 cm are almost entirely piscivorous. Seasonal differences in diet also exist within each size class examined. 相似文献

Stegastes fasciolatus is the most common territorial damselfish in the shallow waters of Hawaii. Territorial defense was observed against other
herbivorous fishes, especially acanthorids, scarids and one omnivorous chaetodontid. One acanthurid,Acanthurus nigrofuscus was found to differ in abundance and social behavior in areas whereS. fasciolatus was present, compared to areas where it was absent. The chaetodontid,Chaetodon quadrimaculatus was sheltered during the day in areas where the pomacentrid was abundant, apparently feeding at night. In other areas it
fed during the day and at night, depending on the phase of the moon.S. fasciolatus were then experimentally removed from one study site, to test whether the differences in abundance and behavior of the other
species were due to the presence of the damselfish. There was a significant increase in numbers of the surgeonfishAcanthurus nigrofuscus in the removal area, as well as changes in social behavior from schooling to defense of small territories. Synopsis Laboratory experiments examined the foraging performances of a dietary generalist, bluegill,Lepomis macrochirus, and a dietary specialist, golden shiner,Notemigonus crysoleucas, as they fed from devices simulating four foraging sites (bottom substrate, water column, submerged macrophytes, and water surface). Fishes foraged in monospecific and mixed-species groups of two and four individuals. For monospecific groups, foraging rates of bluegills did not differ among the four sites, but golden shiners had significantly higher rates on bottom and midwater sites than on plant and surface sites. The size of monospecific groups did not affect foraging rates of either species. In mixed-species trials, bluegills removed more food items than golden shiners from plant and surface sites in two- and four-fish groups and from bottom sites in two-fish groups. Bluegills' foraging performances improved with experience, golden shiners' performances did not. Experimental results are discussed with respect to interactions between bluegills and golden shiners in natural assemblages. 相似文献

Recently we noted the effects of experimental diets on microscopic dental wear in the American opossum and concluded that it might prove difficult to distinguish the microwear produced by an insectivorous diet from that produced by some kinds of herbivorous ones. We also noted that wear caused by gritty diets and those containing plant opal, although they might be confused with one another, are easily distinguished from other sorts of dietary wear. Our conclusions have been challenged on the basis that possibly we did not allow sufficient time in the experiments for diagnostic wear patterns to emerge. Additional data reported here show that this is not so. Even in our n “control” animals, fed a relatively soft unabrasive diet, enough time elapsed to produce significant dental wear. A new technique is described which for the first time allows the study of changing patterns of microscopic wear in a living animal over a period of time, thus allowing each animal to serve as its own control. A solution containing a broad-spectrum proteolytic enzyme when applied to the teeth of an anesthetized animal removes the proteinaceous coat (pellicle) which will otherwise obscure wear scratches. Synopsis This paper describes a study performed in the Gulf of Aqaba on food selectivity and hunting behaviour of three species of sympatric fish from the genusCephalopholis. These fishes occur in the shallow-water coral habitats of the Red Sea and feed on fishes and invertebrates. Of these,C. argus andC. miniata prefer selected fish species (95 and 86% of their diet respectively), whereasC. hemistiktos consumes more invertebrates (36%) and is less selective with respect to fish species. Synopsis Stomach content data from 32 species of Japanese butterflyfishes of the family Chaetodontidae were used to classify them into
feeding groups and to determine their important food resources. Four major feeding groups were distinguished: (1) obligative
coral feeders which prey exclusively or mostly on Scleractinian corals, (2) facultative coral feeders that take both corals
and other benthic organisms, (3) noncoralline invertebrate feeders which consume benthic invertebrates other than corals,
and (4) zooplankton feeders. Ten species representing 31% of the butterflyfishes belong to the first category. The second
and third categories include 13 (41%) and 8 (25%) species, respectively. The fourth category is represented by only one species
which picks individual zooplankters, especially calanoid copepods, in midwater above the reefs. Facultative coral feeders
consumed varying quantities of scleractinians (from 2 to 74% of food volume), along with a variety of benthic organisms including
algae, alcyonarians, sea anemones, sedentary polychaetes, sponges, hydroids, etc. Noncoralline invertebrate feeders, on the
other hand, tend to have low diversified diets, predominated by one prey item such as sea anemones, zoanthideans, polychaetes,
or colonial ascidians. These dietary data suggest that scleractinian corals are the most important food resource for the Japanese

Flow cytometry has been used to make direct measurements of rates of uptake of latex microspheres from dilute, monodisperse suspensions by Tetrahymena pyriformis. Measurements were made for five different sizes of microspheres, ranging from 1.09 to 6.17 μm diameter. Fractions of cells in the population that did not ingest the microspheres offered were also determined. In addition, the size distributions, as indicated by the forward angle light scattering intensity which is measured by the instrument, were determined for the whole population and for the subpopulations of cells that did and did not ingest the particles, for each particle size used. It was found that the fraction of cells that did not ingest the particles was small and independent of particle size when this was less than about 2.7 μm, but increased with particle size when particle size was increased above this value. The so-called maximum clearance rate, which can be calculated from the data, was found to increase monotonically with particle size if it were based only on those cells which actually ingested the particles offered. However, a plot of maximum clearance rate vs. particle size exhibited a maximum if the clearance rate were based on all cells present in the population. 相似文献

We designed an Integrated Media Preparation System (IMPS) for continuous, on-line preparation of cell culture media and delivery to intermediate storage vessels or directly to a bioreactor. Key components of the IMPS include: a high precision, continuous fluid mixing device; formulation-specific liquid medium concentrates; validated process controls and membrane filtration; and automated dispensing into large volume flexible plastic containers. The IMPS system is designed to produce sterile, single-strength liquid medium from common raw materials at a delivery rate of 1000–3000 liters per hour and will manufacture homogenous batches from several thousand liters to over 60,000 liters. Fortified nutrient media prepared from multi-component 50X concentrates have been demonstrated to accelerate bioreactor seed chains, increase product yield, and reduce the overall manufacturing cost of nutrient medium. 本文用18个14.3m ̄3的围隔组成的围隔群,以鲤为材料,研究了水库对投饵网箱养鱼的负荷力。实验中观测了水温、透明度、pH值、溶氧、化学耗氧量、生化需氧量与非离子氨等环境因素的变化。结束时将这些变化与我国渔业水质标准相比较,查明该负荷力约为3000kg·ha ̄(-1),建议增加25-35%的安全储备,以最大载鱼量1800-2300kg·ha ̄(-1)作为推荐值。 相似文献
