Summary During the course of a systematic investigation of the renal corpuscles in various desert rodents (Meriones unguiculati, Meriones shawii, Psammomys obesus, and Dipodymis), a thickened Bowman's capsule was observed light microscopically in some kidneys of adult Meriones unguiculati (Mongolian gerbil). Electron microscopic studies show that this unusual finding may depend on the presence of one or two layers of typical smooth muscle cells adjacent to the outer surface of the basal lamina. In the kidneys of other species of desert rats examined, no pericapsular smooth muscle cells were observed.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Recently, a conservation strategy developed to restore populations of black-tailed prairie dog (Cynomys ludovicianus) suggested reintroducing animals into the Chihuahuan Desert grasslands of the southwestern United States. Rainfall in desert habitats is lower and more variable compared to rainfall near the center of the prairie dog's range. Additionally, peak rainfall comes months after prairie dogs reproduce in these desert systems. Thus, southwestern populations may be less prolific and fluctuate more than those found in northerly climes. Using mark-recapture and mark-resight techniques, we estimated reproduction and monthly survival from 577 individuals inhabiting 6 reintroduced colonies from 2003 to 2005 in the northern Chihuahuan Desert. During 2003 precipitation was 64% of the long-term average, whereas both 2004 and 2005 had near-average precipitation. Probability that a female became pregnant, number of juvenile prairie dogs emerging from maternity burrows, and date of emergence were all correlated to adult female body mass. Adult monthly survival decreased from >0.95 during spring to 0.70 in summer 2003, following a rapid loss in adult body mass that coincided with low precipitation. In 2003 monthly juvenile survival was near zero on 2 of the 3 largest colonies and growth rates of juveniles were half that of subsequent years. Estimated population size declined by 68% (range = 18–91%) from 2003 to 2004, and 5 of 6 populations declined an average of 75% from their original introduction size. Prairie dog populations in desert environs may have a high risk of extirpation caused by weather patterns indicative of desert climates. Our results are important for those managers involved in the conservation of prairie dogs and we suggest that regional differences should be carefully considered prior to any reintroduction effort.  相似文献

Silicification and phytolith formation in Poaceae species growing in arid and semi-arid regions are commonly thought to be positively correlated with silica and water availabilities and with transpiration. To expand our understanding of this phenomenon, we chose to study species of the Asteraceae, the largest dicotyledonous family. We measured phytolith concentrations in eight Asteraceae species (three non-spiny and five spiny) and one Poaceae species (Avena sterilis), as reference, along a large climatic gradient of 80–900 mm mean annual rainfall in Israel.  相似文献

Herbivory is a dominant feeding strategy among animals, yet herbivores are often protein limited. The gut microbiome is hypothesized to help maintain host protein balance by provisioning essential macromolecules, but this has never been tested in wild consumers. Using amino acid carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) isotope analysis, we estimated the proportional contributions of essential amino acids (AAESS) synthesized by gut microbes to five co-occurring desert rodents representing herbivorous, omnivorous and insectivorous functional groups. We found that herbivorous rodents occupying lower trophic positions (Dipodomys spp.) routed a substantial proportion (~40%–50%) of their AAESS from gut microbes, while higher trophic level omnivores (Peromyscus spp.) and insectivores (Onychomys arenicola) obtained most of their AAESS (~58%) from plant-based energy channels but still received ~20% of their AAESS from gut microbes. These findings empirically demonstrate that gut microbes play a key functional role in host protein metabolism in wild animals.  相似文献

Five water-holes in the Kuiseb River Canyon, Namib Desert, were monitored over a three month period during the 1977/78 dry season. Apart from the pronounced dominance of Ca(HCO3)2 in the water taken from a gorra (water-hole excavated by animals), the chemical composition of the waters analysed was dominated by NaHCO3 An edaphic origin where the source water had lost its Ca through precipitation of CaCO3 due to a pH shift is suggested. The saline character of the water-holes is partly ascribed to the input of sea salts through mist rain.  相似文献

1. The seed‐harvester ants Pogonomyrmex rugosus and P. barbatus are ecologically equivalent sister species that have broadly overlapping distributions in the south‐western U.S.A.; however the two species are only sympatric in localised contact zones. 2. Soil regimes at 25–50 cm below the surface were quantified across contact zones to assess abiotic habitat factors related to distribution pattern. Physiological parameters related to foundress survival were also measured in order to test for a correlation between these parameters and distribution pattern. 3. The two species segregated among microhabitats based on soil texture; P. barbatus occurred alone in soils with a higher clay content and/or higher moisture retention. In areas of sympatry, soil texture was similar for both species but was intermediate to that in areas where the two species occurred allopatrically. The pattern of microhabitat segregation was similar across three sites that encompassed a broad range of soil regimes. 4. The only measure of foundress survival correlated with microhabitat differences was an ≈ 8% greater dry mass for alate females of P. rugosus. This resulted in their surviving significantly longer than did alate females of P. barbatus under desiccating conditions. 5. This microdistribution pattern may be caused indirectly by soil texture affecting plant species distribution and hence the seeds available to ants. A companion laboratory experiment demonstrated, however, that soils could also cause this distribution pattern of both ant species directly via effects on foundress wet mass.  相似文献

The main navigational mechanism used by foraging desert ants of the genus Cataglyphis is path integration (dead reckoning). Any such egocentric system of navigation is prone to cumulative navigational errors. Hence, while homing Cataglyphis might have reset its path integration system and yet not arrived at the start of its foraging excursion, the nest entrance. Then it resorts to piloting or performs a systematic search for the nest. The search pattern consists of a system of loops of ever increasing size centred about the origin, i.e. the start of the search. Here we show that underlying the system of loops is a spiral search programme that gets transformed into the observed pattern of loops by the ant's idiosyncratic path-integration algorithm. The ant starts to follow a spiral course, then breaks off this course and walks towards the centre, i.e. to what its path-integration system has computed to be the origin of the search. This reset episode is followed by another spiral course, which is terminated by the next reset, and so forth. After each reset, the spiral gets wider, so that the whole pattern expands. Futhermore, every now and then the spiral might change its sign. Computer simulations based on these simple rules lead to search patterns of the kind actually recorded in Cataglyphis ants. These patterns ensure that those parts of the area in which the target (nest entrance) is most likely to be located are searched most heavily; in other words: the search density profile is adapted to the probability density function of the target.  相似文献
