The synchronisation phenomena in biological systems is a current and recurring subject of scientific study. This topic, namely that of circadian clocks, served as inspiration to develop an agent-based simulation that serves the main purpose of being a proof-of-concept of the model used in the BitBang framework, that implements a modern autonomous agent model. Despite having been extensively studied, circadian clocks still have much to be investigated. Rather than wanting to learn more about the internals of this biological process, we look to study the emergence of this kind of adaptation to a daily cycle. To that end we implemented a world with a day/night cycle, and analyse the ways the agents adapt to that cycle. The results show the evolution of the agents’ ability to gather food. If we look at the total number of agents over the course of an experiment, we can pinpoint the time when reproductive technology emerges. We also show that the agents adapt to the daily cycle. This circadian rhythm can be shown by analysing the variation on the agents metabolic rate, which is affected by the variation of their movement patterns. In the experiments conducted we can observe that the metabolic rate of the agents varies according to the daily cycle.  相似文献

Heisenberg’s uncertainty relation has inspired speculations in a variety of scientific fields. Most of these speculations have wandered significantly far from the original formulation; yet, they may have been useful for a critical examination of methodological issues. As molecular genetics and its complexities evolve amid a backdrop of technological innovation, new “uncertainties” may have emerged. Large populations of non-social bees are rarely seen in today's cultural landscapes. One of the few exceptions is the fossorial bee Andrena vaga Panzer, (Andrenidae), a typical insect species of river flood plains, which forms sizeable nesting aggregations along the high water dams of the Upper Rhine, each containing up to several tens of thousands of bees. In May 1999, a record flood of the River Rhine led to extreme water levels at the high water dams of the Upper Rhine. Though natural flooding is often viewed as a management practice with considerable conservation perspectives for river flood plain management, we demonstrate a catastrophic effect of the 1999 inundation on the immature offspring of two affected populations of A. vaga. All immatures in brood cells located low on the landward side of a dam died, very likely because saturation of the soil restricted oxygen availability.The two affected aggregations sited on the high water dam declined in the following year to 23 and 56% of pre-flood size, but not at a neighbouring, non-flooded aggregation. Rare parasites associated with A. vaga also decreased in number following flooding. These results highlight a dilemma on the use of natural flooding of river plains for conservation purposes.  相似文献

Sand movement is a predominant feature of mobile coastal and lake-shoreline sand dunes. Plants growing in these environments are able to withstand and survive periods of burial by sand. Although mosses are important dune stabilizers in temperate dunes, there are few studies focused on their response to burial by sand. In this study we examined the effects of burial by sand on 11 moss species that grow naturally on Lake Huron sand dunes and occur in a gradient of habitats from the foredunes along the shore to forested areas. Artificial burial treatments (sand depth of 0, 1, 3, 5 and 7 cm) were imposed under greenhouse and field conditions. We measured final plant cover and calculated the speed of emergence and an interpretive index (tolerance index) to compare burial responses among species by calculating a burial ratio which standardized the initial size of each species. In the greenhouse, Ceratodon purpureus and Ditrichum flexicaule recorded the highest mean speeds of emergence and Dicranum scoparium, Plagiothecium laetum, Dicranum flagellare and Brachythecium sp. 1 the lowest. In the field the trends were similar although the speed of emergence was much slower. Three types of response to burial were evident in plant cover: neutral, inhibition and stimulation. Although all eleven studied species were able to emerge from the different depths of burial, we observed that species colonizing areas with high sand mobility and deposition (C. purpureus and D. flexicaule) were the most tolerant and emerged from depths of up to 35 times their height. Species growing inland, at the base of trees (Dicranum scoparium, Brachythecium sp. 2, Plagiomnium cuspidatum and Dicranum flagellare) showed the least tolerance of burial.  相似文献

As shown in nearly 10,000 Negro and White boys and girls between 4.5 and 16.5 years of age, poverty-level children (with an income-to-needs ratio of 1.0) tend to be delayed in permanent tooth emergence as compared with those approximating median per-capita income. For boys, a per-capita income difference of $2200 was associated with a 0.15 standard deviation difference in emergence timiing of 28 permanent teeth.  相似文献

Summary The time at which plants emerge from the soil is shown to be correlated with both survival and growth in each of four years in a plant community emerging after yearly plowing. For all seven species investigated, earlier emerging individuals generally had both a higher biomass and probability of survival. There were differences among species in the effect of emergence time on biomass, with the growth of upright, annual species being more suppressed by later emergence than the growth of other species. No significant differences were found among species in the effects of emergence time on survival. It was expected that differences among species in the effect of emergence time on fitness might lead to a correlation between the patterns of emergence time and species characteristics such as growth form or lifespan. Mean emergence times did vary significantly among both the seven species and the four years of the study. However, there was no correlation between emergence time and species lifespan, growth form, abundance, or competitive ability. The lack of a correlation between the selection pressure on species and their emergence time could be due low heritability, insufficient time for selection and evolution, and/or selection on correlated characters.  相似文献

Swarming and mating behaviors of a mayfly species, Ephemera orientalis Mclachlan, 1875 were observed in 2015, 2016, and 2018 at a river bank of the Asahi River, Japan. Males started to make swarms between late April and middle May in 2016 and 2018. The numbers of mated pairs in a swarm correlated with the numbers of flying males in a swarm in 2016 and 2018. Swarms were formed during a limited period at dusk most probably because that interval is free from natural enemies. Males competed with each other to copulate with females in swarms. We clarified the function of the forelegs of males, which are significantly longer than those of females. Males used their forelegs to hold up a female from below. Besides forelegs, males have longer tails than females. We will discuss why sexual differences are found in these traits. Our results represent the first observation of swarm mating behavior in E. orientalis.  相似文献

 Christmas (Kiritimati) Island is an unusually large coral atoll, of which a large proportion of the surface is presently subaerial. Extensive outcrops of in situ branching Acropora corals, together with Porites microatolls, Tridacna, and other shallow marine biota, indicate that the present low-lying area of interconnecting lakes in the island interior formed as a reticulate lagoon. Radiocarbon dating indicates that these lagoonal reefs flourished between 4500 and 1500 radiocarbon years BP, and surveying confirms that sea level was 0.5–1.0 m above present at that time, with subaerial exposure resulting from Late Holocene emergence. Boreholes undertaken for a water resources survey of the island penetrated near-surface Pleistocene limestones on the northern, southern, and eastern sides of the island. These are highly weathered and fractured, and although aragonitic clasts are preserved, U-series dating indicates a Middle Pleistocene or older age. At one location flanking the Bay of Wrecks, an outcrop of limestone, with an erosional notch, 1–2 m above present sea level, yielded a U-series age of 130 ka, and is interpreted as Last Interglacial in age. In contrast to previous interpretations which have suggested that Christmas Island comprised an atoll superstructure that is entirely Holocene, or the layer-cake interpretation appropriate for many mid-ocean atolls, Christmas Island appears to have had a form similar to its present in the Middle Pleistocene or earlier. It has undergone karstification during lowstands. Interglacials, particularly the Last Interglacial and the Holocene, appear to have resulted in only a minor veneer of coral over older limestone surfaces. Christmas Island is considered characteristic of an atoll that has not experienced significant subsidence through the Late Quaternary. Accepted: 15 May 1998  相似文献

目的:探讨蓝斑区(LC)去甲肾上腺素能神经元在orexin促麻醉觉醒中作用。方法:应用异氟烷对成年SD大鼠进行麻醉,15分钟后,将SD大鼠随机分为6组,分别注射orexin-A/B(100pmol/0.3μL)及其溶剂saline(0.3μL);orexin I型受体拮抗剂SB334867/II型受体拮抗剂TCS-OX2-29(20μg/0.3μL及其溶剂DMSO(0.3μL),通过观察大鼠翻正反射的消失和恢复时间,研究蓝斑区微注射orexin及其拮抗剂对异氟烷麻醉的诱导和觉醒的影响。结果:蓝斑区(LC)微注射四种试剂或其溶剂均对SD大鼠异氟烷麻醉的诱导时间无明显影响;蓝斑区(LC)微注射orexin-A能缩短SD大鼠异氟烷麻醉觉醒时间(P〈0.001),而微注射orexinI型拮抗剂SB334867能延长觉醒时间(P〈0.001);orexin-B、orexin II型受体拮抗剂TCS-OX2-29对大鼠异氟烷麻醉的觉醒无明显影响。结论:蓝斑区(LC)的去甲肾上腺素能神经元介导了orexin的促麻醉觉醒作用。  相似文献
