Plant architecture of apple trees in commercial orchards was rapidly changed from traditional tall trees to dwarf trees to optimize yield and fruit quality. Additionally, hail nets are widely used to prevent yield loss by hail. These changes are expected to considerably influence the orchard microclimate and thus the developmental rates of pest insects in apple. However, these relationships have not yet been fully elucidated. The present study was conducted over the seasonal cycle to investigate the influence of plant architecture and hail nets on the habitat temperatures of the codling moth, Cydia pomonella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), in apple, Malus domestica Borkh. (Rosaceae). Within the canopies, leaf area index (LAI) and global site factor (GSF) were quantified using hemispherical photography. Temperature was analysed for the main habitats of the different codling moth stages, i.e., air within the canopy, bark of tree stems, and apple fruit. In dwarf trees, LAI was lower, leading to a higher GSF than in tall trees. Hail nets did not influence LAI and GSF. Results for dwarf trees compare as follows with those for tall trees: Average air temperatures within the canopy were 0.7 °C higher during daytime, whereas 0.4 °C lower at night. Mean surface temperatures of bark were 0.9 °C higher on sunny and 0.4 °C on overcast days. Mean surface temperatures of apple fruits were 1.8–2.7 °C higher on sunny days, but 0.6 °C cooler on overcast days. The effect of hail nets was confined to a reduction of the air temperature within the canopy by approximately 0.2–0.8 °C. Bark and apple surface temperatures were not significantly affected. Based on the temperature differences in the habitats considered, the calculated development of the codling moth in dwarf trees was on average 3 days faster than in tall trees. The calculations imply a negligible effect of hail nets on codling moth development.  相似文献

Species richness on island or islandlike systems is a function of colonization, within-island speciation, and extinction. Here we evaluate the relative importance of the first two of these processes as a function of the biogeographical and ecological attributes of islands using the Galápagos endemic land snails of the genus Bulimulus, the most species-rich radiation of these islands. Species in this clade have colonized almost all major islands and are found in five of the six described vegetation zones. We use molecular phylogenetics (based on COI and ITS 1 sequence data) to infer the diversification patterns of extant species of Bulimulus, and multiple regression to investigate the causes of variation among islands in species richness. Maximum-likelihood, Bayesian, and maximum-parsimony analyses yield well-resolved trees with similar topologies. The phylogeny obtained supports the progression rule hypothesis, with species found on older emerged islands connecting at deeper nodes. For all but two island species assemblages we find support for only one or two colonization events, indicating that within-island speciation has an important role in the formation of species on these islands. Even though speciation through colonization is not common, island insularity (distance to nearest major island) is a significant predictor of species richness resulting from interisland colonization alone. However, island insularity has no effect on the overall bulimulid species richness per island. Habitat diversity (measured as plant species diversity), island elevation, and island area, all of which are indirect measures of niche space, are strong predictors of overall bulimulid land snail species richness. Island age is also an important independent predictor of overall species richness, with older islands harboring more species than younger islands. Taken together, our results demonstrate that the diversification of Galápagos bulimulid land snails has been driven by a combination of geographic factors (island age, size, and location), which affect colonization patterns, and ecological factors, such as plant species diversity, that foster within-island speciation.  相似文献

The review deals with objective reasons that limit the use of chlorophyll fluorescence induction kinetics (Chl FIK) method in plant ecology. Based on the ontogenetic approach (analysis and comparison of the dynamics of the Chl fluorescence ratio Fp/Fs and physiological characteristics of plant leaves in ontogeny) possible criteria for the estimation of general plant resistance of photosynthetic apparatus (PSA) to prolonged stress affects are proposed. One of these criteria is the presence or absence of a steady-state phase in the dynamics of Chl fluorescence ratio Fp/Fs (or Rfd) of plant leaves after they stop growing. We also propose to use the duration of the steady-state phase and variability of Chl fluorescence ratios Rfd and Fp/Fs in this period for quantitative assessment of plant PSA resistance to prolonged stress during plant leaf ontogeny. Calamagrostis arundinacea L. (Roth.) and C. villosa (Chaix.) J.F. Gmel are two grass species substituting forest communities on deforested areas in Central Europe. They were exposed to enhanced ultraviolet-B (UV-B, λ = 290–320 nm) radiation during 22 weeks. A system of modulated lamps operating under field conditions was used to simulate a 25 % increase of incident UV-B radiation. CO2 assimilation seemed to be limited by a decrease of stomatal conductance (g s) in C. arundinacea, whereas carboxylation activity of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RuBPCO) was not affected. On the contrary, g s and RuBPCO activity decreased in C. villosa. These physiological adjustments resulted in growth changes; above-ground biomass decreased in C. villosa (prevailing negative effect) and significantly increased in C. arundinacea (prevailing positive effect) in response to enhanced UV-B radiation.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Depletion of the stratospheric ozone layer leads to an increase in ultraviolet-B (UVB: 280-320 nm) radiation reaching the earth's surface, and the enhanced solar UVB radiation predicted by atmospheric models will result in reduction of growth and yield of crops in the future. Over the last two decades, extensive studies of the physiological, biochemical and morphological effects of UVB in plants, as well as the mechanisms of UVB resistance, have been carried out. SCOPE: In this review, we describe recent research into the mechanisms of UVB resistance in higher plants, with an emphasis on rice (Oryza sativa), one of the world's most important staple food crops. Recent studies have brought to light the following remarkable findings. UV-absorbing compounds accumulating in the epidermal cell layers have traditionally been considered to function as UV filters, and to play an important role in countering the damaging effects of UVB radiation. Although these compounds are effective in reducing cyclobutane pyrimidine dimer (CPD) induction in plants exposed to a challenge exposure to UVB, certain levels of CPD are maintained constitutively in light conditions containing UVB, regardless of the quantity or presence of visible light. These findings imply that the systems for repairing DNA damage and scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS) are essential for plants to grow in light conditions containing UVB. CONCLUSION: CPD photolyase activity is a crucial factor determining the differences in UVB sensitivity between rice cultivars. The substitution of one or two bases in the CPD photolyase gene can alter the activity of the enzyme, and the associated resistance of the plant to UVB radiation. These findings open up the possibility, in the near future, of increasing the resistance of rice to UVB radiation, by selective breeding or bioengineering of the genes encoding CPD photolyase.  相似文献

To determine the chromosomal locations for genes expressed in porcine Peyer's patches, polymerase chain reaction-based mapping of expressed sequence tags (ESTs) isolated from a porcine Peyer's patch-specific cDNA library was performed across a 6500-rad swine radiation hybrid panel. Congenital multiple ocular defects (MOD) of Japanese black cattle is a hereditary ocular disorder with an autosomal recessive mode of inheritance showing developmental defects of the lens, retina and iris, persistent embryonic eye vascularization and microphthalmia. The MOD locus has been mapped by linkage analysis to a 6.6-cM interval on the proximal end of bovine chromosome 18, which corresponds to human chromosome 16q and mouse chromosome 8. To refine the MOD region in cattle, we constructed an integrated radiation hybrid (RH) map of the proximal region of bovine chromosome 18, which consisted of 17 genes and 10 microsatellite markers, using the SUNbRH7000 panel. Strong conservation of gene order was found among the corresponding chromosomal regions in cattle, human and mouse. The MOD-critical region was fine mapped to a 59.5-cR region that corresponds to a 6.3-Mb segment of human chromosome 16 and a 4.8-Mb segment of mouse chromosome 8. Several positional candidate genes, including FOXC2 and USP10, were identified in this region.  相似文献

In this study, we present a comprehensive 5000-rad radiation hybrid map of a 40-cM region on equine chromosome 4 (ECA4) that contains quantitative trait loci for equine osteochondrosis. We mapped 29 gene-associated sequence tagged site markers using primers designed from equine expressed sequence tags or BAC clones in the ECA4q12-q22 region. Three blocks of conserved synteny, showing two chromosomal breakpoints, were identified in the segment of ECA4q12-q22. Markers from other segments of HSA7q mapped to ECA13p and ECA4p, and a region of HSA7p was homologous to ECA13p. Therefore, we have improved the resolution of the human-equine comparative map, which allows the identification of candidate genes underlying traits of interest.  相似文献

Sphingolipids function as bioactive mediators of different cellular processes, mostly proliferation, survival, differentiation and apoptosis, besides being structural components of cellular membranes. Involvement of sphingolipid metabolism in cancerogenesis was demonstrated in solid tumors as well as in hematological malignancies. Herein, we describe the main biological and clinical aspects of leukemias and summarize data regarding sphingolipids as mediators of apoptosis triggered in response to anti-leukemic agents and synthetic analogs as inducers of cell death as well. We also report the contribution of molecules that modulate sphingolipid metabolism to development of encouraging strategies for leukemia treatment. Finally we address how deregulation of sphingolipid metabolism is associated to occurrence of therapy resistance both in vitro and in vivo. Sphingolipids can be considered promising therapeutic tools alone or in combination with other compounds, as well as valid targets in the attempt to eradicate leukemia and overcome drug resistance.  相似文献

Exposure of MDA-MB-468 cells to ionizing radiation (IR) caused biphasic activation of ERK as indicated by its phosphorylation at Thr202/Tyr204. Specific epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) inhibitor AG1478 and specific Src inhibitor PP2 inhibited IR-induced ERK1/2 activation but phosphatidylinositol-3 kinase inhibitor wortmannin did not. IR caused EGFR tyrosine phosphorylation, whereas it did not induce EGFR autophosphorylation at Tyr992, Tyr1045, and Tyr1068 or Src-dependent EGFR phosphorylation at Tyr845. SHP-2, which positively regulates EGFR/Ras/ERK signaling cascade, became activated by IR as indicated by its phosphorylation at Tyr542. This activation was inhibited by PP2 not by AG1478, which suggests Src-dependent activation of SHP-2. Src and PTPalpha, which positively regulates Src, became activated as indicated by phosphorylation at Tyr416 and Tyr789, respectively. These data suggest that IR-induced ERK1/2 activation involves EGFR through a Src-dependent pathway that is distinct from EGFR ligand activation.  相似文献
