It has been shown that prolonged exposure to a human face leads to shape-selective visual aftereffects. It seems that these face-specific aftereffects (FAEs) have multiple components, related to the adaptation of earlier and higher level processing of visual stimuli. The largest magnitude of FAE, using long-term adaptation periods, is usually observed at the retinotopic position of the preceding adaptor stimulus. However, FAE is also detected, to a smaller degree, at other retinal positions in a spatially invariant way and this component depends less on the adaptation duration. Several lines of evidences suggest that while the position-specific FAE involves lower level areas of the ventral processing stream, the position-invariant FAE depends on the activation of higher level face-processing areas and the fusiform gyrus in particular. In the present paper, we summarize the available behavioural, electrophysiological and neuroimaging results regarding the spatial selectivity of FAE and discuss their implications for the visual stability of object representations across saccadic eye movements. 相似文献

Species with restricted distributions make up the vast majority of biodiversity. Recent evidence suggests that Drosophila species with restricted tropical distributions lack genetic variation in the key trait of desiccation resistance. It has therefore been predicted that tropically restricted species will be limited in their evolutionary response to future climatic changes and will face higher risks of extinction. However, these assessments have been made using extreme levels of desiccation stress (less than 10% relative humidity (RH)) that extend well beyond the changes projected for the wet tropics under climate change scenarios over the next 30 years. Here, we show that significant evolutionary responses to less extreme (35% RH) but more ecologically realistic levels of climatic change and desiccation stress are in fact possible in two species of rainforest restricted Drosophila. Evolution may indeed be an important means by which sensitive rainforest-restricted species are able to mitigate the effects of climate change. 相似文献

The central assumption of evolutionary theory is that natural selection drives the adaptation of populations to local environmental conditions, resulting in the evolution of adaptive phenotypes. The three‐spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) displays remarkable phenotypic variation, offering an unusually tractable model for understanding the ecological mechanisms underpinning adaptive evolutionary change. Using populations on North Uist, Scotland we investigated the role of predation pressure and calcium limitation on the adaptive evolution of stickleback morphology and behavior. Dissolved calcium was a significant predictor of plate and spine morph, while predator abundance was not. Stickleback latency to emerge from a refuge varied with morph, with populations with highly reduced plates and spines and high predation risk less bold. Our findings support strong directional selection in three‐spined stickleback evolution, driven by multiple selective agents. 相似文献

During the last few years, geographical information systems (GIS) have spread as powerful tools for landscape analysis. The main purpose of this work was to use GIS to display an ecological network made up of core areas, key areas and ecological corridors. As an example of the application of this method we refer to the population of deer (Cervus elaphus) and roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) in an alpine area in northwestern Italy. The method provided an overall view of the ecological network of the area, highlighting how linear infrastructures can affect animal populations and consequently, their survival probability. 相似文献

Ephedra sinica is a rare and vulnerable species in China, and the habitat of Ephedra sinica is seriously threatened (by climate change and human activities). Predicting the suitable growth areas and constructing ecological corridors for Ephedra sinica in China will help to protect it scientifically. Based on 306 valid distribution records and 13 selected environmental factors, the maximum entropy (MaxEnt) model was used to simulate the potential current habitat zones and future (2050 and 2070) habitat zones of Ephedra sinica under four climate change scenarios. The minimum cumulative resistance (MCR) model was applied to extract important ecological corridors of Ephedra sinica. The results indicate that: (1) Under the current environment, the total area of the suitable habitat for Ephedra sinica in China is 42.24 × 105 km2, mainly distributed in Northwest China and North China. (2) Suitable area increases as the RCP rises. The center of mass of the habitat zone moved northward from Shaanxi Province to Ordos City in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. (3) Of the 13 environmental factors selected, the primary factor was elevation (20.8 %), followed by wettest month precipitation (18.2 %) and temperature seasonality (15.2 %). (4) Built 19 ecological corridors, with a total corridor length of 430.2 km, including seven long-distance passages and 12 short-distance corridors. All corridors are far from the artificial surface, mostly near high-altitude areas. The 19 ecological corridors constructed using the MCR model will also provide considerable importance for the survival of Ephedra sinica on a longer time scale in the future. 相似文献

Unlike other species of the genus Blechnum, the fern Blechnum chilense occurs in a wide range of habitats in Chilean temperate rainforest, from shaded forest understories to abandoned clearings
and large gaps. We asked if contrasting light environments can exert differential selection on ecophysiological traits of
B. chilense. We measured phenotypic selection on functional traits related to carbon gain: photosynthetic capacity (A
max), dark respiration rate (R
d), water use efficiency (WUE), leaf size and leaf thickness in populations growing in gaps and understorey environments. We
assessed survival until reproductive stage and fecundity (sporangia production) as fitness components. In order to determine
the potential evolutionary response of traits under selection, we estimated the genetic variation of these traits from clonally
propagated individuals in common garden experiments. In gaps, survival of B. chilense was positively correlated with WUE and negatively correlated with leaf size. In contrast, survival in shaded understories
was positively correlated with leaf size. We found positive directional fecundity selection on WUE in gaps population. In
understories, ferns of lower R
d and greater leaf size showed greater fecundity. Thus, whereas control of water loss was optimized in gaps, light capture
and net carbon balance were optimized in shaded understories. We found a significant genetic component of variation in WUE,
R
d and leaf size. This study shows the potential for evolutionary responses to heterogeneous light environments in functional

AIMS: The aim was to develop reliable and economical protocols for the production of fully deuteriated biomolecules by bacteria. This required the preparation of deuterium-tolerant bacterial strains and an understanding of the physiological mechanisms of acquisition of deuterium tolerance. METHODS AND RESULTS: We report here improved methods for the cultivation of Escherichia coli on fully deuteriated minimal medium. A multi-stage adaptation protocol was developed; this included repeated plating and selection of colonies and resulted in highly deuterium-tolerant cell cultures. Three E. coli strains, JM109, MRE600 and MRE600Rif, were adapted to growth on deuteriated succinate medium. This is the first report of JM109 being adapted to deuteriated minimal media. The adapted strains showed good, consistent growth rates and were capable of being transformed with plasmids. Expression of heterologous proteins in these strains was reliable and yields were consistently high (100-200 mg l-1). We also show that all E. coli cells are inherently capable of growth on deuteriated media. CONCLUSIONS: We have developed a new adaptation protocol that resulted in three highly deuterium-tolerant E. coli strains. Deuterium-adapted cultures produced good yields of a deuteriated recombinant protein. We suggest that E. coli cells are inherently capable of growth on deuteriated media, but that non-specific mutations enhance deuterium tolerance. Thus plating and selection of colonies leads to highly deuterium-tolerant strains. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF STUDY: An understanding of the mechanism of adaptation of E. coli to growth on deuteriated media allows strategies for the development of disabled deuterium-tolerant strains suitable for high-level production of deuteriated recombinant proteins and other biomolecules. This is of particular importance for nuclear magnetic resonance and neutron scattering studies of biomolecules. 相似文献
