• Premise of the study: In ecosystems where seed production is low and masting years are sporadic, or with species that have short-lived seeds, regeneration is assured by seedling banks rather than seed banks. Seedling establishment and survival play a critical role in determining the composition of these plant communities by supplying new individuals for their maintenance. Seedling emergence and mortality were investigated to test the hypothesis that recruitment into the seedling bank is periodic. • Materials and methods: Seed production and seedling emergence and survival was monitored during 1994-2007 in balsam fir (Abies balsamea) and white spruce (Picea glauca) in four pristine stands of the boreal forest of Quebec, Canada. Measurements were collected twice per month by sampling one permanent plot of 20 × 20 m per stand. • Key results: Seed-rain abundance reached 9 × 103 seeds m−2 year−1, and was characterized by synchronous sequences of low and high seed production. New seedlings appeared only during the year following a seed production of at least 1 × 103 and 1.5 × 102 seeds m−2 year−1 for balsam fir and white spruce, respectively. Seedlings emerged in July and survived 34-52 d on average, with balsam fir showing a longer lifespan and lower mortality, although 85–99% of seedlings died before completing one year of life. • Conclusions: The emergence of young seedlings was coupled with massive seed rains, which allowed synchronous replenishment of the seedling banks among stands and species, and generated different cohorts, yielding a discontinuous age structure. 相似文献

- Variation in soil salt may change the stoichiometry of a halophyte by altering plant ecophysiology, and exert different influences on various plant organs, which has potentially important consequences for the nutrition of consumers as well as nutrient cycling in a saline ecosystem.
- Using a greenhouse pot experiment, we investigated the effect of salinity variability on the growth and stoichiometry of different organs of Suaeda glauca and Salicornia europaea – two dominant species of important ecological and economic value in the saline ecosystem.
- Our results showed that appropriate salt stimulated the growth of both species during the vigorous growth period, while high salt suppressed growth. Na significantly increased with increased salt in the culture, whereas concentrations of other measured elements and K:Na ratio for both species significantly decreased at low salt treatments, and became more gradual under higher salt conditions. Furthermore, with the change of salt in culture, variations in leaf (degenerated leaf for S. europaea, considered as young stem) stoichiometry, except N:P ratio, were large and less in stems (old stems for S. europaea) than in roots, reflecting physiological and biochemical reactions in the leaf in response to salt stress, supported by sharp changes in trends.
- These results suggest that appropriate saline conditions can enhance biological C fixation of halophytes; however, increasing salt could affect consumer health and decrease cycling of other nutrients in saline ecosystems.

Eighteen monoterpenes found in bole and foliage volatiles of four sympatric species of conifers, Douglas-fir, Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco, lodgepole pine, Pinus contorta var. latifolia Engelm., interior spruce, Picea engelmannii×glauca, and interior fir, Abies lasiocarpa×bifolia, in three locations in British Columbia, Canada, were analysed for quantitative variation (N=10 trees per sample) using standard and chiral gas chromatography. There was significant variation in monoterpene composition between bole and foliage in all four species. Principal components analysis revealed that the monoterpene profile of coastal Douglas-fir was significantly different from trees in the interior, supporting the hypothesis that coastal and interior populations represent distinct chemotypes. Although the four species did not differ qualitatively, there were significant differences in their quantitative monoterpene profiles in both bole and foliage. These differences were large enough to suggest that host selection by four species of coniferophagous bark beetles (Coleoptera: Scolytidae), specific to each of the above tree species, may depend in part on perception of, and behavioural response to quantitatively distinct blends of monoterpenes. 相似文献

trnK intron and rpl33-psaJ-trnP region were sequenced, and the nuclear-encoded ITS region of the rDNA repeat was partially sequenced. Thirteen chloroplast
and 12 nuclear candidate interspecific single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were identified. The species-specificity of
several SNPs was determined by surveying DNAs amplified from trees representing range-wide provenance tests; these included
46 red spruce from 11 provenances, 84 black spruce from 30 provenances and 90 white spruce from 22 provenances. Two SNPs (1
chloroplast and 1 nuclear), which distinguish black spruce from red and white spruce, were consistent among 96–100% of the
trees surveyed. Five SNPs (4 chloroplast and 1 nuclear), which distinguish white spruce from red and black spruce, were consistent
among 100% of surveyed trees. These species-specific SNPs were used to identify anonymous spruce samples in a blind test,
and their utility for small amounts of tissue, as little as single needles, was demonstrated. Scoring these SNPs is much less
labor intensive than previous molecular methods for taxa differentiation (restriction fragment length polymorphisms or random
amplified polymorphic DNAs), therefore they can be applied to large population studies.

In vitro cultures and endogenous abscisic acid (ABA) analyses with gas chromatography-selected ion monitoring-mass spectrometry (GC-SIM-MS) were used to study the effects of AgNO3 and polyethylene glycol (PEG) on white spruce ( Picea glauca ) somatic embryo maturation and endogenous ABA contents, Normally, in the absence of ABA, white spruce somatic embryos cannot mature. However, AgNO3 and PEG stimulated somatic embryo maturation by increasing the number of cotyledonary embryos. A combination of 100 μ M AgNO3 and 40 g l−1 PEG was the treatment that was most effective in enhancing cotyledonary embryo formation without exogenous ABA. Either AgNO3 or PEG was able to increase endogenous ABA levels of the embryogenic culture but a combination of AgNO3 and PEG was the most effective treatment. Stimulation of cotyledonary embryo formation by AgNO3 occurred only at low ABA levels, while PEG promoted embryo formation at all exogenous ABA concentrations. Germination tests indicated that AgNO3 had no negative effects on embryo germination and conversion while the PEG-treated embryos failed to germinate. 相似文献

Abstract. In order to explain conifer species recruitment in Canada's southeastern boreal forest, we characterized conifer regeneration microsites and determined how these microsites vary in abundance during succession. Microsite abundance was evaluated in deciduous, mixed and coniferous stands along a 234-yr postfire chronosequence. Conifers were most often found in relatively well-illuminated microsites, devoid of litter, especially broad-leaf litter, and with a reduced cover of lower vegetation (< 50 cm tall). Although associated with moss-rich forest floor substrates, Abies balsamea was the most ubiquitously distributed species. Picea glauca and especially Thuja occidentalis seedlings were frequently found on rotten logs. Light measurements did not show differences among seedling species nor between stand types. The percentage cover of broad-leaf litter decreased significantly during succession. Also, rotten logs covered with moss occupied a significantly larger area in the mid-successionnal stands than in early successional deciduous or late successional coniferous stands. The results suggest that the presence of specific forest floor substrate types is a factor explaining low conifer recruitment under deciduous stands, conifer codominance in the mid-successional stage, and delayed Thuja recolonization after fire. Abstract: We studied the biochemical composition and photosynthetic characteristics of the aerial parasite eastern dwarf mistletoe (Arceuthobium pusillum) and the effect of infection on the needles of host white spruce (Picea glauca) in a coastal forest stand in Maine, USA. Eastern dwarf mistletoe was capable of photosynthetic oxygen evolution; however, rates were low and were exceeded by respiratory oxygen consumption at all light intensities through full sunlight. Therefore, eastern dwarf mistletoe acts as a net sink for host photosynthate. Relative to those of uninfected trees, needles from infected branches of white spruce were significantly smaller in terms of length, fresh weight, maximum cross section and the diameter of the vascular cylinder. Needles of uninfected and infected trees did not differ in terms of fresh weight to dry weight ratio, nor in nitrogen, soluble sugar or starch content. Needles of infected trees possessed significantly less α-carotene and neoxanthin, but did not otherwise differ from uninfected needles in terms of chlorophyll and carotenoid composition. Since specific physiological roles for α-carotene and neoxanthin have not been described, the functional significance of the decreases in their content is not known. Photosynthetic capacities of needles from infected and uninfected white spruce did not differ significantly, as measured by oxygen evolution. These findings suggest that dwarf mistletoe infection does not substantially perturb host white spruce source-sink balance at the end of the growing season and that carbon exchange dynamics between the host and parasite are unlikely to fully explain the detrimental effects of infection on white spruce. 相似文献

Triazine-resistant (R) and susceptible (S) biotypes of Chenopodium album, Conyza bonaeriensis and Setaria glauca were compared in terms of photosynthetic activity, chloroplast ultrastructure, and polar-lipid composition of thylakoid membranes. Concerning photosynthetic activity, R relative to S biotypes showed lower rates in photosystem II electron transport (R/S ratios in the 0.3-0.5 range), which were correlated with increases in the ratio of I to P levels of the fluorescence emission curve, but similar rates in both whole-chain electron transport by thylakoids and photosynthetic oxygen evolution at different light intensities and at temperatures of 20 and 30°C by leaf discs. Concerning chloroplast structural characteristics, R and S biotypes did not show differences in degree of thylakoid appression and chlorophyll a/b ratio. However, thylakoid polar-lipids of R biotypes exhibited a higher degree of unsaturation, specially, in its monogalactosyl diglyceride fraction; they were richer in trans-hexadecenoic acid in its phospholipid fraction and they had higher contents in monoglactosyl diglyceride. The above results are discussed in relation to possible differences in photosynthetic performance between R and S plants. 相似文献
