The effects of common inorganic ions found in freshwater on the infectivity of Romanomermis culicivorax and the survival of its host, Culex pipiens, were tested. In general, the median lethal concentrations found for R. culicivorax were greater than the reported median concentrations of these ions in freshwater but less than the reported maximum natural concentrations. The ion toxicity for R. culicivorax (on a molar basis) increased in the following order: sodium < potassium < calcium; aml chloride < carbonate = sulfate < nitrate < nitrite < phosphate. The larvae of C. pipiens were generally 20 to 75 times as tolerant of higher ion concentrations as were the preparasitic stages of R. culicivorax. 相似文献

In the rain-forest of Suriname, where malaria is endemic, 95% of the Maroons (who call themselves bush-negroes) and all Amerindians use mosquito nets made of cotton cloth or, less frequently, nylon or cotton gauze over their hammocks or beds. Bush-negroes usually wash their nets weekly; Amerindians wash nets at 1-4 month intervals. Females of the principal local malaria vector, Anopheles darlingi Root, were seen blood-feeding through cotton cloth netting (at 22.30-23.30 hours) on a person sleeping in a hammock; others fed successfully after the net was opened in the morning. Cotton cloth impregnated with permethrin at a rate of 0.5 g/m2 killed all An. darlingi females exposed for 2 min, but after the material had been washed twice in soapy water the bioassay mortality fell to only 21.4%. Exit traps on a hut with a single sleeper protected by a permethrin-impregnated net yielded 185 An. darlingi females (12% blood-fed) in 74 nights, compared with 276 females (19% blood-fed) from another hut with a sleeper using an untreated net on the same nights (P less than 0.001). No An. darlingi females remained resting alive indoors in these huts during the daytime, and very few were found dead on the floor in the mornings (one treated, seven untreated). The 24 h mortality rate for those collected in exit traps was 58.4% for the test hut and 27.1% for the control hut (P less than 0.001). Bioassays of permethrin-treated cotton cloth using laboratory-reared sugar-fed Culex quinquefasciatus Say females showed that sprayed nets were less effective than nets impregnated by soaking (at equivalent dosages of 0.16-1.34 g/m2 measured by chemical assay) and confirmed that washing causes severe decline in insecticidal activity. Five trapping methods were compared for monitoring potential vectors of the West Nile virus in four areas in the Camargue Plain of France: carbon dioxide traps, bird‐baited traps, gravid traps, resting boxes, and human landing catches. A total of 73,721 specimens, representing 14 species, was trapped in 2006. Results showed significant differences in species and abundance between the type of traps. Many more specimens were collected using CO2 traps than any other method, with an average of 212 specimens per night per trap (p<0.05). Culex pipiens was the most abundant species collected (36.8% of total with CO2 traps), followed by Aedes caspius (22.7%), Anopheles hyrcanus (18.3%), Culex modestus (18.3%), and Aedes detritus (3.2%). Bird‐baited traps captured only eight specimens per night per trap on average, mainly Cx. pipiens (89.9%). The species collected and their abundance are influenced by the trap location, at ground or canopy level. Culex pipiens was twice as abundant in the canopy as on the ground, whereas it was the opposite for Ae. caspius, An. hyrcanus, and Ae. detritus. Culex modestus was equally abundant at both levels. Resting boxes and gravid traps were much less efficient, capturing around 0.3 specimens per night per trap. Results are discussed in relation to West Nile virus surveillance. 相似文献

1. Water‐borne predator kairomones are known to allow mosquito larvae to detect and identify the presence of a specific predator, so that they can deploy defences tailored to that predator. Kairomones, however, have limitations, and detection of specific water‐borne vibrations produced by a predator would allow fine‐tuning of their anti‐predator defences. 2. Larvae of the mosquito Culiseta longiareolata have previously been shown to recognise the specific vibration pattern of a feeding dragonfly nymph and respond by altering their feeding behaviour from active bottom‐scraping to a more passive surface filter‐feeding, while other water vibrations did not produce this response. Culex perexiguus larvae also responded, but to a much lesser extent. 3. In this study, C. perexiguus larvae responded strongly to dragonfly vibrations by reducing their larval duration from 9.8 to 8.7 days, but this resulted in significantly smaller (and thus probably less successful) adults. Abstract. Both the synthetic oviposition pheromone, erythro-6-acetoxy-5-hexa-decanolide (0.01–80 μg) and a polluted water sample (0.01–80%) significantly increased oviposition by gravid female Culex quinquefasciatus Say (Diptera: Culicidae) in a laboratory assay against clean water. An additive effect resulted when 0.05 μg oviposition pheromone was combined with the polluted water dilution series. Undiluted, however, both the oviposition pheromone and the polluted water sample, alone and in combination, reduced the oviposition response to control levels. A previously reported oviposition site odour component, 3-methylindole, also significantly increased oviposition at 1 × 10_8 to 1 × 10-7 g but at 1 × 10_7 g significantly less oviposition occurred than in control treatments. The biological activities of the compounds were additionally evaluated electrophysiologically by an EAG assay. Female mosquitoes were electrophysiologically sensitive to the oviposition cues, both pheromone and habitat-related; EAG responses of males were considerably lower than of females with 3-methylindole. 相似文献

The larval susceptibility to Bacillus sphaericus strain 2362 of the non-man-biting mosquito Culex cinereus and the urban filariasis vector Culex quinquefasciatus, two competitor mosquitoes in polluted habitats, was compared. In the laboratory, both species ingested a similar amount of B. sphaericus spores when fed c. 2 x 10(5) spores per ml for 30 min. However, in the same experiment, third-instar larvae of Cx quinquefasciatus were reduced by 98% at 24 h exposure while Cx cinereus larvae were only reduced by 6% at 72 h. In the field, preimaginal populations of Cx cinereus ingested, within a week, more than 99% of the applied spores, but showed no significant decrease through 14 days in cesspools treated at 10 g/m2 of a flowable concentrate of B. sphaericus 2362, containing 2 x 10(10) spores/g. It is proposed that specific biological control of Cx quinquefasciatus could result from appropriate treatment of breeding-sites with larvicidal B. sphaericus and competitive displacement by Cx cinereus or other mosquitoes with larvae that are more tolerant of B. sphaericus. 相似文献

Abstract. In Sri Lanka the national Anti-Filaria Campaign (AFC) has routinely employed fenthion since 1974 for larvicidal control of Culex quinquefasciatus , the vector of Bancroftian filariasis in urban areas, where this mosquito breeds prolifically in polluted waters. During 1994 the efficacy of AFC fenthion treatment against organophosphate-resistant Cx quinquefasciatus was investigated at Dehiwela, near Colombo.
The AFC target rate of fenthion application was 1 mg a.i./l, but the actual concentrations of fenthion in freshly treated pits ranged from 0.64 to 63.2 mg a.i./l. There was significant suppression of larval densities in treated soakage pits, the predominant breeding site of Cx quinquefasciatus , although the mosquito population was 6-fold resistant to fenthion at the LCW level. Production of pupae was almost completely prevented in soakage pits which were sprayed weekly with fenthion, indicating that adult mosquito emergence from this source was minimal. The rapid decline in concentration of fenthion detected in the water of soakage pits indicated that a weekly treatment schedule is essential for effective control. With the rapid recolonization of treated sites, the weekly schedule must be strictly implemented in order to achieve control of resistant larvae. Fenthion activity levels detected in treated pits suggest that a 7–10 day schedule of retreatment would completely suppress susceptible Cx quinquefasciatus. 相似文献

Applications of neem, Azadirachta indica (Meliaceae), to rice-fields were evaluated with the dual objective of controlling the culicine mosquito vectors of Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) and enhancing the grain yield. Since crude neem products deteriorate under improper storage conditions, a laboratory bioassay was developed to screen neem cake powder against mosquito larvae, Culex quinquefasciatus. Only samples of neem giving over 90% bioassay mortality were used in field trials. When good quality neem cake powder was applied at the dose of 500 kg/ha, either alone or coated over urea, there was a striking reduction in the abundance of late instar culicine larvae and pupae. Only fourteen pupae were obtained over a period of 13 weeks in neem cake powder treated plots, and four in those treated with neem coated urea, compared with 101 in control plots. Both treatments were significantly less than the control, but on par with one another. In another field trial, neem cake coated urea was tested at 500 and 250 kg neem/ha in combination with water management practices. No reduction in efficacy was noted at the lower dose. Larval abundance in plots under water management alone did not differ significantly from the controls, but was significantly reduced when water management was combined with neem products. Two stable formulations, 'Neemrich-I' (lipid rich) and 'Neemrich-II' (azadirachtin rich), also gave good suppression of immature culicines.
