Trophic structure of a neotropical frugivore community: is there competition between birds and bats?
Summary Dietary overlap and competition between frugivorous birds and bats in the Neotropics have been presumed to be low, but comparative data have been lacking. We determined the diets of volant frugivores in an early successional patch of Costa Rican wet forest over a one month period. Ordination of the diet matrix by Reciprocal Averaging revealed that birds and bats tend to feed on different sets of fruits and that diets differed more among bat species than among bird species. However, there was overlap between Scarlet-rumped Tanagers and three Carollia bat species on fruits of several Piper species which comprised most of the diet of these bats. Day/night exclosure experiments on P. friedrichsthalli treetlets provided evidence that birds deplete the amount of ripe fruit available to bats. These results indicate that distantly related taxa may overlap in diet and compete for fruit, despite the apparent adaptation of animal-dispersed plant species for dispersal by particular animal taxa. 相似文献

Summary Much ecological theory assumes that the number of species that can coexist (by species packing) is limited, because competitive exclusion occurs when any pair of species within a guild is too similar — species saturation or niche limitation. If such niche limitation occurs, the proportion of species in each guild should be relatively constant — guild proportionality. This concept is applied to the guilds represented by strata in a forest. A method is produced, and used to examine a New Zealand temperate rain forest. Most strata showed no deviation from a null model of no niche limitation, i.e. no tendency to guild proportionality. The proportion of lianes was more variable than in the null model, tending to be inversely related to the proportion of epiphytes, Canopy tree proportion was significantly more constant than in the null model, but this could be interpreted as a limit caused by the size of a canopy tree individual. 相似文献

Summary The ecological meaning of size relationships within guilds is still a matter of debate. We analyzed the niches and size relationships in Coleoptera associated with Cardueae host plants. Species were grouped into guilds using distributional data, host records and feeding strategies: a) The species of the genus Larinus are inhabitants of flower heads within the Cynaroideae. Two types of Larinus species were distinguished: one type attacks immature flower heads, the other exploits the floer heads in a more advanced stage. The females of the first group have elongated rostres adapted to piercing through the bracts of closed flower heads, the other group possesses blunt, short rostres. For an oligophagous group of four Larinus species we are able to show that the distribution of average female rostre length is non-random. b) In southern France four stem boring species of the genera Agapanthia and Lixus coexist within the same hosts. The frequency distributions of body length from these species are clearly overdispersed. c) Coexisting species of the folivorous genus Cassida show no differences in body sizes. We conclude that morphometric differences within the investigated guild of endophytic species (Larinus and Agapanthia/Lixus) evolved in response to size of the used plant structures and the size of potentially competing species, a pattern not evident in ectophytic species. We suggest that these differences are part of a general pattern as the evolution of herbivorous guild may strongly depend on the way how the host resource is exploited (endophagy vs ectophagy). So current differences in statements on the organization of herbivore communities could perhaps be reconciled. 相似文献

Summary In 4 common Middle-European mainly bumblebee-pollinated plant species (Impatiens glandulifera, Echium vulgare, Aconitum napellus, Symphytum officinale) the influence of patch size on species composition of the pollinator community was studied. Short-tongued species were most dominant in large patches, while small patches were frequented by middle- and long-tongued bumblebees. This phenomenon was extremely obvious in Symphytum officinale and Aconitum napellus, where short-tongued species had bitten a hole in nearly every flower of large patches. Long-tongued species were forced to small patches, where nectarrobbing occurred only exceptionally. In small patches visitationrate (Number of visits per flower per hour) was not lower but either equal or even higher then in large patches. Nectar measurements in Echium vulgare showed, that not only the mean quantity of nectar but also the variance was lower in small patches. As a result, the possible gain can be predicted much more precisely in a small patch than in a large one, and bumblebees have less difficulties in making the right foraging decisions. According to this, foraging strategies depend on patch size. This was confirmed by a computer simulation. The conclusion can be drawn, that many bumblebee species are able to share the same resource by using different patch sizes. Summary We tested the Enemy Impact Hypothesis, which predicts that communities of one tropic level are organized by the tropic level above. In the case of gallforming insect communities, the hypothesis predicts that gall morphology will diverge, minimizing the number of parasitoids shared among species. We used the monophyletic group of gallforming cecidomyiids (Asphondylia spp.) on creosote bush (Larrea tridentata) to test this hypothesis, predicting that species with thicker gall walls should exclude species of parasitoids with shorter ovipositors and have lower levels of parasitism. Of 17 parasitoid species reared from Asphondylia galls on creosote bush, 9 accounted for over 98% of parasitism. Seven of these 9 species had ovipositors long enough to penetrate 10 of 13 gall morphs measured. There was no significant relationship between gall wall thickness and number of associated parasitoid species (r
2=0.01, P>0.05, n=13). There was no relationship between gall wall thickness and types of parasitoid species colonizing galls: parasitoids with the shortest ovipositors colonized all types of gall morphs and were dominant members of the parasitoid assemblages in galls with the thickest walls. Ultimately, there were no significant differences in percent parasitism among Asphondylia species, regardless of gall wall thickness. We found no difference in numbers of associated parasitoids or percent parasitism in galls with different textures (e.g. hairy versus smooth), different locations on the plant or different phenologies. Our results suggest that enemy impact has not influenced the diversity of this gall community. Gall wall thickness, phenology, location on the plant and surface structure do not appear to influence the distribution of parasitoid species. Erythrina lectins possess similar structural and carbohydrate binding properties. Recently, tri- and tetra-antennary complex type carbohydrates with non-reducing terminal galactose residues have been shown to be precipitated as tri- and tetravalent ligands, respectively, with certainErythrina lectins [Bhattacharyya L, Haraldsson M, Brewer CF (1988) Biochemistry 271034-41]. The present work describes a comparative study of the binding and precipitating activities of fourErythrina lectins,viz. E. corallodendron, E. cristagalli, E. flabelliformis, andE. indica, with multi-antennary complex type carbohydrates and synthetic cluster glycosides. The results show that though their binding affinities are very similar, theErythrina lectins show large differences in their precipitating activities with the carbohydrates. The results also indicate significant dependence of the precipitating activities of the lectins on the core structure of the carbohydrates. Summary Knowledge of the metabolic changes that occur in insulin-resistant type 2 diabetes is relatively lacking compared to insulin-deficient type 1 diabetes. This paper summarizes the importance of the C57BL/KsJ-db/db mouse as a model of type 2 diabetes, and illustrates the effects that insulin-deficient and insulin-resistant states have on hepatic glycogen metabolism. A longitudinal study of db/db mice of ages 2–15 weeks revealed that significant changes in certain parameters of hepatic glycogen metabolism occur during this period. The liver glycogen levels were similar between diabetic and control mice. However, glycogen particles from db/db mice were on average smaller in mass and had shorter exterior and interior chain lengths. Total phosphorylase and phosphorylase a activities were elevated in the genetically diabetic mice. This was primarily due to an increase in the amount of enzymic protein apparently the result of a decreased rate of degradation. It was not possible to find a consistent alteration in glycogen synthase activity in the db/db mice. Glycogen synthase and phosphorylase from diabetic liver revealed some changes in kinetic properties in the form of a decrease in Vmax, and altered sensitivity to inhibitors like ATP. The altered glycogen structure in db/db mice may have contributed to changes in the activities and properties of glycogen synthase and phosphorylase. The exact role played by hormones (insulin and glucagon) in these changes is not clear but further studies should reveal their contributions. The db/db mouse provides a good model for type 2 diabetes and for fluctuating insulin and glucagon ratios. Its use should clarify the regulation of hepatic glycogen metabolism and other metabolic processes known to be controlled by these hormones. The other animal models of type 2 diabetes, ob/ob mouse and fatty Zucker (fa/fa) rat, show similar impairment of hepatic glycogen metabolism. The concentrations of glycogen metabolizing enzymes are high and in vitro studies indicate enhanced rate of glycogen synthesis and breakdown. However, streptozotocin-induced diabetic animals and BB rats which resemble insulin-deficient type 1 diabetes are characterized by decreased glycogen turnover as a result of reduction in the levels of glycogen metabolizing enzymes. 相似文献

Twelve male Sprague-Dawley rats (21 days old) were randomly assigned into two experimental groups: sea level control (CONT) and hypobaric hypoxia (HYPO). The HYPO rats were kept in an hypobaric chamber maintaining a simulated altitude of 4000 m (61.1 kPa). After 10 weeks of treatment, the rat hindlimb muscles [soleus (SOL) and extensor digitorum longus (EDL)] were subjected to histochemical and electro-mechanical analyses. Results indicated that compared to CONT the HYPO SOL muscle had a significantly greater relative distribution of fast-twitch-oxidative-glycolytic (FOG) fibres (28.9% SEM 2.0 vs 18.3% SEM 1.8, P less than 0.01) with a significant decrease in slow twitch oxidative fibre distribution (69.5% SEM 2.4 vs 82.9% SEM 3.1, P less than 0.01). Compared to CONT the HYPO EDL muscle also manifested a significant increase in FOG fibre distribution (51.6% SEM 0.8 vs 46.6% SEM 1.1, P less than 0.01), but this was accompanied by a significant decrease in fast twitch glucolytic fibres (44.3% SEM 0.9 vs 49.2% SEM 1.7, P less than 0.05). These histochemical fibre type transformations accompanied significant and expected changes in the electro-mechanical parameters tested in situ, e.g. maximal twitch force, maximal rate of force development, contraction time, half relaxation time, force: frequency curve, and fatigability. Twenty-four women completed a 20-week heavy-resistance weight training program for the lower extremity. Workouts were twice a week and consisted of warm-up exercises followed by three sets each of full squats, vertical leg presses, leg extensions, and leg curls. All exercises were performed to failure using 6-8 RM (repetition maximum). Weight training caused a significant increase in maximal isotonic strength (1 RM) for each exercise. After training, there was a decrease in body fat percentage (p less than 0.05), and an increase in lean body mass (p less than 0.05) with no overall change in thigh girth. Biopsies were obtained before and after training from the superficial portion of the vastus lateralis muscle. Sections were prepared for histological and histochemical examination. Six fiber types (I, IC, IIC, IIA, IIAB, and IIB) were distinguished following routine myofibrillar adenosine triphosphatase histochemistry. Areas were determined for fiber types I, IIA, and IIAB + IIB. The heavy-resistance training resulted in significant hypertrophy of all three groups: I (15%), IIA (45%), and IIAB + IIB (57%). These data are similar to those in men and suggest considerable hypertrophy of all major fiber types is also possible in women if exercise intensity and duration are sufficient. In addition, the training resulted in a significant decrease in the percentage of IIB with a concomitant increase in IIA fibers, suggesting that strength training may lead to fiber conversions. 相似文献

Production of novel pullulanases at high concentrations by two newly isolated thermophilic clostridia 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Two thermophilic bacteria, which are capable of growing on starch at 60-70 degrees C under anaerobic conditions, were isolated from a sugar refinery in Uelzen and from Solar lake in Israel. On the basis of their physiological characteristics they were identified as Clostridium thermohydrosulfuricum Uel 1 and C. thermohydrosulfuricum Sol 1, respectively. The product pattern of glucose polymer hydrolysis showed that both strains secreted enzymes that possess amylolytic and pullulytic activities. The major product formed was maltose. In addition, alpha-glucosidase activity could be detected in the supernatants of Uel 1 strain. Compared to most anaerobes investigated these isolates secreted extremely high concentrations of pullulanases in batch culture. Up to 85% of the total enzyme synthesized was detected in the culture fluid. Unlike the pullulanases of type I, which can only attack the alpha-1,6-glycosidic linkages, the pullulanases of both clostridial strains were also capable of hydrolyzing alpha-1,4-linkages. The enzyme system of both bacteria was found to be highly thermoactive; optimal activity was detected at pH 5.0 and 85 degrees C.
