The paper examines Marcello Barbieri’s (2007) Introduction to Biosemiotics. Highlighting debate within the biosemiotic community, it focuses on what the volume offers to those who explain human intellect in relation to what Turing called our ‘physical powers.’ In scrutinising the basis of world-modelling, parallels and contrasts are drawn with other work on embodied-embedded cognition. Models dominate biology. Is this a qualitative fact or does it point to biomechanisms? In evaluating the 18 contributions, it is suggested that the answers will shape the field. First, they will decide if biochemistry and explanatory reduction can be synergised by biosemantics. Second, they will show if our intellectual powers arise from biology. Does thinking use—not a language faculty—but what Marko? and colleagues call semiosis by the living? Resolution of such issues, it is suggested, can change how we view cognition. Above all, if the biomechanists win the day, cultural models can be regarded as extending natural meaning. On such a view, biomechanisms prompt us to act and perceive as we model our own natural models. This fits Craik’s vision: intellect gives us the alphanumerical ‘symbols’ that allow thoughts to have objective validity. For the biomechanist, this is explained—not by brains alone—but, rather, by acting under the constraints of historically extended sensoria. 相似文献

The present study reports the effect of indanone derivatives on scopolamine induced deficit cholinergic neurotransmission serving as promising leads for the therapeutics of cognitive dysfunction. Eleven compounds 54–64 have been designed, synthesised and evaluated against behavioural alterations using step down passive avoidance protocol at a dose of 0.5?mg/kg with Donepezil (1) as the reference standard. All the synthesised compounds were evaluated for their in vitro acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibition at five different concentrations using mice brain homogenate as the source of the enzyme. Compounds 54, 56, 59 and 64 displayed appreciable activity with an IC50 value of 14.06?µM, 12.30?µM, 14.06?µM and 12.01?µM, respectively towards acetylcholinesterase inhibition. The molecular docking study performed to predict the binding mode of the compounds suggested that these compounds could bind appreciably to the amino acids present at the active site of recombinant human acetylcholinesterase (rhAChE). The behavioural, biochemical and in silico pharmacokinetic studies were in concordance with each other. 相似文献

ABSTRACTSleep deprivation impairs performance on cognitive tasks, but it is unclear which cognitive processes it degrades. We administered a semantic matching task with variable stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA) and both speeded and self-paced trial blocks. The task was administered at the baseline and 24 hours later after 30.8 hours of total sleep deprivation (TSD) or matching well-rested control. After sleep deprivation, the 20% slowest response times (RTs) were significantly increased. However, the semantic encoding time component of the RTs remained at baseline level. Thus, the performance impairment induced by sleep deprivation on this task occurred in cognitive processes downstream of semantic encoding. 相似文献

Plants produce dangerous chemical and physical defenses that have shaped the physiology and behavior of the herbivorous predators that feed on them. Here we explore the impact that these plant defenses may have had on humans by testing infants' responses to plants with and without sharp-looking thorns. To do this, we presented 8- to 18-month-olds with plants and control stimuli and measured their initial reaching behavior and subsequent object exploration behavior. Half of the stimuli had sharp-looking thorns or pointed parts while the other half did not. We found that infants exhibited both an initial reluctance to touch and minimized subsequent physical contact with plants compared to other object types. Further, infants treated all plants as potentially dangerous, whether or not they possessed sharp-looking thorns. These results reveal novel dimensions of a behavioral avoidance strategy in infancy that would mitigate potential harm from plants. 相似文献

In the current study, we scrutinized the effect of sevoflurane and halothane on cognitive and immune function in young rats. The rats were divided into following groups: sevoflurane, halothane and sevoflurane + halothane groups, respectively. The rats were regularly treated with the pre-determined treatment. We also scrutinized the serum proinflammatory cytokines including IL-10, IL-4 and IL-2; brain level IL-1β; hippocampal neuronal apoptosis concentration were estimated. The water maze test was performed in rats for the estimation of cognitive ability. During the water maze test, on the 1st day the sevoflurane group showed the latency; sevoflurane and sevoflurane + halothane group demonstrated the declined latency gradually as compared to the control group rats after the 3 days. The latency of the control, halothane, sevoflurane + halothane group rats showed the reduced latency and also showed the reduced crossing circle times. The hippocampal neuron apoptosis was significantly increased in halothane and sevoflurane + halothane group as compared to control group rats, respectively. Control group rats demonstrated the increased neuron apoptosis. The proinflammatory cytokines including IL-10 and IL-4 was significantly higher in sevoflurane, halothane and sevoflurane + halothane group rats after anesthesia and the whole brain IL-1β was significantly decrease in the sevoflurane, halothane and sevoflurane + halothane as compared to control group. Sevoflurane can inhibit the anesthesia effect of halothane on the immune and cognitive function of rats. 相似文献

Recent progress in primatology, neurology and psychology has made it possible to begin to synthesize and combine the data and concepts from these fields into the physical anthropological approach to child growth and development. This paper attempts to conceptualize this new biobehavioral approach, reviewing two studies which exemplify it, already under research at the Krogman Growth Center. The first, which deals with mother-newborn social interaction, explores neonate attachment behaviors and predictable maternal response. The methodology of this study relies heavily on ethological techniques. The second study, involving pre-pubescent and post-pubescent same sex twins, aims to delineate the genetic and environmental components of certain human behavioral qualities, such as intelligence, using the genetic approach to human variation. The problem of how this possibly interacts with the secular trend is also discussed. 相似文献

The drought tolerance of the commercial apple ( Malus domestica Borkh.) rootstocks M9, M26, M27 and MM111, and some new selections
from the rootstock breeding programme at HRI-East Malling (AR69-7, AR295-6, AR360-19, AR486-1 and AR628-2), was assessed using
potted, glasshouse-grown, unworked rootstocks. After an initial period of growth under well-watered conditions the amount
of irrigation was gradually reduced, for some treatments, to simulate natural drying in the soil. At the end of a six-month
growth period, the rootstocks were harvested and the production of dry matter and its partitioning to various plant parts
determined. The rootstocks exhibited large differences in shoot and root dry matter, and root length but not all the rootstocks
showed declines in root mass or length in response to the droughting treatment. The dwarfing rootstocks tended to have smaller
amounts of both coarse (>2 mm diameter) and fine roots (<2 mm diameter), than the more vigorous rootstocks. Irrespective of
rootstock or irrigation treatment there was a close linear relationship between coarse and fine root. There was also no change
in the length/weight relationship for fine roots irrespective of rootstock or irrigation treatment, i.e. 42 m of fine root
weighed 1 g dry weight. In some cases the amount of root produced could be directly correlated with the rootstock known potential
to control scion vigour, but this was not true for all the rootstocks examined. The absence of this relationship was particularly
evident in some of the new selections of rootstock. The possible causes for these differences, compared with commercially
used rootstocks, is discussed in relation to the origin and parentage of the rootstock selections. Despite this lack of a
root length/vigour relationship, the amount of dry matter partitioned to shoot growth reflected the rootstocks' known vigour.
The different responses of these rootstocks to drought are discussed along with their implications for understanding the mechanisms
by which rootstocks are thought to dwarf scion shoots. 相似文献

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common reason for progressive dementia in the elderly. It has been shown that disorders of the mammalian/mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling pathways are related to the AD. On the other hand, diabetes mellitus (DM) is a risk factor for the cognitive dysfunction. The pathogenesis of the neuronal impairment caused by diabetic hyperglycemia is intricate, which contains neuro-inflammation and/or neurodegeneration and dementia. Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP1) is interesting as a possible link between metabolism and brain impairment. Modulation of GLP1 activity can influence amyloid-beta peptide aggregation via the phosphoinositide-3 kinase/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway in AD. The GLP1 receptor agonists have been shown to have favorable actions on the brain such as the improvement of neurological deficit. They might also exert a beneficial effect with refining learning and memory on the cognitive impairment induced by diabetes. Recent experimental and clinical evidence indicates that dipeptidyl-peptidase-4 (DPP4) inhibitors, being currently used for DM therapy, may also be effective for AD treatment. The DPP-4 inhibitors have demonstrated neuroprotection and cognitive improvements in animal models. Although further studies for mTOR, GLP1, and DPP4 signaling pathways in humans would be intensively required, they seem to be a promising approach for innovative AD-treatments. We would like to review the characteristics of AD pathogenesis, the key roles of mTOR in AD and the preventive and/ or therapeutic suggestions of directing the mTOR signaling pathway. 相似文献

A novel series of arylsulfonamide derivatives of (aryloxy)propyl piperidines was designed to obtain potent 5-HT7R antagonists. Among the compounds evaluated herein, 3-chloro-N-{1-[3-(1,1-biphenyl-2-yloxy)2-hydroxypropyl]piperidin-4-yl}benzenesulfonamide (25) exhibited antagonistic properties at 5-HT7R and showed selectivity over selected serotoninergic and dopaminergic receptors, as well as over serotonin, noradrenaline and dopamine transporters. Compound 25 demonstrated significant antidepressant-like activity in the forced swim test (0.625–2.5 mg/kg, i.p.) and in the tail suspension test (1.25 mg/kg, i.p.), augmented the antidepressant effect of inactive doses of escitalopram (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor) and bupropion (dopamine reuptake inhibitor) in the FST in mice, and similarly to SB-269970, exerted pro-cognitive properties in the novel object recognition task in cognitively unimpaired conditions in rats (0.3 mg/kg, i.p.). Such an extended pharmacological profile, especially the augmentation effect of the identified 5-HT7R antagonist on SSRI activity, seems promising regarding the complexity of affective disorders and potentially improved outcomes, including mnemonic performance. 相似文献

目的:探讨右美托咪定对腰椎全麻手术患者术后疼痛及认知功能的影响。方法:选择2014年3月~2015年12月在我院行腰椎全麻手术的84例患者为研究对象,按照随机数字表法分为对照组(42例)和试验组(42例),患者均常规给予芬太尼及顺式阿曲库铵麻醉诱导,试验组患者在麻醉诱导过程中给予右美托咪定静脉注射,对照组患者仅给予氯化钠注射液静脉注射。分别于术前(T0)、手术开始2 h(T2)、术后24 h(T24)检测血清肾上腺糖皮质激素,采用疼痛视觉模拟评分法(VAS)进行疼痛评定;采用简易智能精神状态量表(MMSE)于术后1d和2d进行认知状态评定,并计算术后认知功能障碍(POCD)发生率;同时观察患者不良反应发生情况。结果:试验组患者T2和T24时肾上腺糖皮质激素水平明显低于T0,T2时试验组患者肾上腺糖皮质激素水平明显低于对照组,差异有统计学意义(P0.05)。试验组患者T2时VAS评分明显低于对照组,差异有统计学意义(P0.05)。术后1d和2d时试验组患者的MMSE评分高于对照组,POCD发生率明显低于对照组;两组患者术后2d时MMSE评分高于术后1d,POCD发生率明显低于术后1d,差异均有统计学意义(P0.05)。两组患者均未见除POCD以外的不良反应。结论:右美托咪定有较强的抗氧化能力,可有效减轻腰椎全麻手术患者的疼痛程度,提高患者的认知功能。 相似文献
