Pereskia marcanoi is newly described from the rocky hillsides of Cerro San Francisco (Bánica), western Dominican Republic. With three other species from Hispaniola and Cuba, this new taxon forms a unique group of functionally dioeciousPereskia species native to the West Indies. Some important diagnostic characters of the members of this group are contrasted in key form.  相似文献

Morphological variation was analyzed in wild, managed in situ, and cultivated populations of the columnar cactus Stenocereus stellatus in central Mexico. The purpose was to evaluate whether morphological divergence between manipulated and wild populations has resulted from domestication processes. Variation of 23 morphological characters was analyzed among 324 individuals from 19 populations of the Tehuacán Valley and La Mixteca Baja. Multivariate statistical analyses were used to group individuals and populations according to their morphological similarity. Individuals grouped according to the way of management and fruit characteristics were the most relevant for grouping. Within each region, sweet fruits with pulp colors other than red were more frequent in cultivated populations, where fruits were also larger, contained more and bigger seeds, and had thinner peel and fewer spines than fruits from wild individuals. Phenotypes common in managed in situ and cultivated populations generally occur in the wild but in lower frequencies. Artificial selection has thus operated by enhancing and maintaining desirable rare phenotypes in managed in situ and cultivated populations, causing divergent patterns of morphological variation from wild populations. Cultivation has caused the strongest level of divergence, but divergence has also been significant with management of wild populations in situ.  相似文献

Echinocactus grusonii is common in trade but critically endangered in its natural habitat. With the ultimate aim of developing a certification scheme to aid in the conservation of this species, we have isolated E. grusonii microsatellites from a nonenriched library. Fifty-seven sequences contained a microsatellite array, of which 12 were polymorphic among 30 individuals from a single wild population. All 12 microsatellite primer pairs amplified product in one or more species in a screen of 27 other cactus species.  相似文献

The phylogenetic relationships of Peniocereus (Cactaceae) species were studied using parsimony analyses of DNA sequence data. The plastid rpl16 and trnL-F regions were sequenced for 98 taxa including 17 species of Peniocereus, representatives from all genera of tribe Pachycereeae, four genera of tribe Hylocereeae, as well as from three additional outgroup genera of tribes Calymmantheae, Notocacteae, and Trichocereeae. Phylogenetic analyses support neither the monophyly of Peniocereus as currently circumscribed, nor the monophyly of tribe Pachycereeae since species of Peniocereus subgenus Pseudoacanthocereus are embedded within tribe Hylocereeae. Furthermore, these results show that the eight species of Peniocereus subgenus Peniocereus (Peniocereus sensu stricto) form a well-supported clade within subtribe Pachycereinae; P. serpentinus is also a member of this subtribe, but is sister to Bergerocactus. Moreover, Nyctocereus should be resurrected as a monotypic genus. Species of Peniocereus subgenus Pseudoacanthocereus are positioned among species of Acanthocereus within tribe Hylocereeae, indicating that they may be better classified within that genus. A number of morphological and anatomical characters, especially related to the presence or absence of dimorphic branches, are discussed to support these relationships.  相似文献

A methanol extract from the roots and aerial parts of Myrtillocactus geometrizans (Cactaceae) yielded peniocerol 1, macdougallin 2, and chichipegenin 3. The natural products 1, 2 their mixtures, MeOH and CH(2)Cl(2) extracts showed insecticidal and insect growth regulatory activity against fall armyworm [Spodoptera frugiperda J. E. Smith (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)], an important insect pest of corn, and [Tenebrio molitor (Coleoptera)], a pest of stored grains in Mexico. The most active compounds were 1, 2, and a mixture (M(2)) of 1 and 2 (6:4). All these extracts, compounds and the mixture had insect growth regulating (IGR) activity between 5.0 and 50.0 ppm and insecticidal effects between 50 and 300 ppm in diets. The extracts were insecticidal to larvae, with lethal doses between 100 and 200 ppm. These compounds appear to have selective effects on the pre-emergence metabolism of Coleoptera, because in all treatments of the larvae of T. molitor, pupation were shortened and this process show precociousness in relation to controls. In contrast to S. frugiperda larvae, onset of pupation was noticeably delayed. Emergence in both cases was drastically diminished. In both pupae and in the few adults that were able to emerge, many deformations were observed. The results of these assays indicated that the compounds were more active than other known natural insect growth inhibitors such as gedunin and methanol extracts of Cedrela salvadorensis and Yucca periculosa. Peniocerol, macdougallin and chichipegenin, as well as mixtures of these substances, may be useful as natural insecticidal agents.  相似文献

The X-ray diffractometric and infrared spectroscopic investigation of crystalline material isolated from the Cactaceae species Opuntia ellisiana shows the presence of a very complex mineral composition, including whewellite (monohydrated calcium oxalate), opal (SiO2), calcite (CaCO3) and glushinskite (dihydrated magnesium oxalate). This is the first report of the presence of magnesium oxalate in plants.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Hylocereus and Selenicereus are native to tropical and sub-tropical America. Based on its taxonomic status and crossability relations it was postulated that H. megalanthus (syn. S. megalanthus) is an allotetraploid (2n = 4x = 44) derived from natural hybridization between two closely related diploid taxa. The present work aimed at elucidating the genetic relationships between species of the two genera. METHODS: Crosses were performed and the putative hybrids were analysed by chromosome counts and morphological traits. The ploidy level of hybrids was confirmed by fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) of rDNA sites. Genomic in situ hybridization (GISH) was used in an attempt to identify the putative diploid genome donors of H. megalanthus and an artificial interploid hybrid. KEY RESULTS: Reciprocal crosses among four diploid Hylocereus species (H. costaricensis, H. monacanthus (syn. H. polyrhizus), H. undatus and Hylocereus sp.) yielded viable diploid hybrids, with regular chromosome pairing. Reciprocal crosses between these Hylocereus spp. and H. megalanthus yielded viable triploid, pentaploid, hexaploid and aneuploid hybrids. Morphological and phenological traits confirm the hybrid origin. In situ detection of rDNA sites was in accord with the ploidy status of the species and hybrid studied. GISH results indicated that overall sequence composition of H. megalanthus is similar to that of H. ocamponis and S. grandiflorus. High sequence similarity was also found between the parental genomes of H. monacanthus and H. megalanthus in one triploid hybrid. CONCLUSIONS: The ease of obtaining partially fertile F1 hybrids and the relative sequence similarity (in GISH study) suggest close genetic relationships among the taxa analysed.  相似文献

In allopatric systems, where gene flow is highly constrained, the distinction between intraspecific differentiation and speciation is a challenging task. Pilosocereus jauruensis is a columnar cactus restricted to patchy dry habitats of Pantanal, Cerrado, and Chaco biomes in south-western Brazil and neighbouring countries. This species was recently reinstated after having been synonymized with P. machriisi, now including P. paraguayensis, P. saudadensis, and P. densivillosus as its synonyms. These taxa have been placed within the informal Aurisetus group. The present study aimed to investigate the genetic structure of P. jauruensis in order to identify possible distinct evolutionary lineages, and to support further refinement of the taxonomy of this species. For this purpose, 10 microsatellite loci were genotyped for 156 individuals of P. jauruensis. To provide a proxy for the expected interspecific differentiation level within this allopatric system, two populations (49 individuals) of P. vilaboensis (a species closely related to P. jauruensis) were also included. Additionally, two cpDNA markers (trnSGCU-trnGUCC and trnT-trnL) for a subsample of 44 individuals of both species were sequenced. The results obtained showed that even though P. jauruensis populations are relatively small and isolated, they still maintain a high level of genetic diversity (e.g., HE = 0.557 to 0.725; HO = 0.253 to 0.409). The study suggests the existence of two distinct taxa/evolutionary lineages through their entire distribution. Two populations found in the same geographic region of the now synonymized P. densivillosus showed significant genetic divergence when compared with other populations of P. jauruensis. In contrast, our results did not support an evolutionary independence hypothesis for populations that occur in the same geographic region of the synonymous P. saudadensis.  相似文献

Cactaceae is considered the fifth most endangered taxonomic group. In light of this, the aim of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of different low‐temperature storage techniques in maintaining the viability of seeds of cacti in different threat categories. Seeds of six cacti taxa were stored in a cold chamber (8°C), a freezer (?5°C), in liquid nitrogen (?196°C) and at room temperature (25–27°C) for a period of 0, 1, 3, 6, 9 and 13 months. At each evaluation interval we removed a seed sample for each taxon studied, which was distributed into four repetitions of 25 seeds maintained at room temperature under 12‐h light/dark photoperiods. We evaluated the germinability, mean germination time and synchronization index. Most of the studied taxa presented germinability of above 50%, which was influenced by time and by storage temperatures. Also, most taxa stored at room temperature presented a significant reduction in germinability, whereas almost all taxa showed maintenance of the seed viability when stored in a cold chamber, a freezer or liquid nitrogen. This response can be justified by the reduction of the seed metabolism and the degradation of the reserve compounds of the seeds while at lower temperatures. Our results indicate that storage at low temperatures is an effective method for the conservation of cacti seeds and can be used for the formation of artificial seed banks of threatened cacti species.  相似文献
