Although several generalist species of Pergalumna are known to be nematode predators, the potential of oribatid mites as natural enemies of phytonematodes has been underestimated. The objective of this work was to estimate the consumption rate of a Pergalumna sp. when feeding on two major pest nematodes, Meloidogyne javanica and Pratylenchus coffeae, under laboratory conditions. A new method was used, in which live nematodes are offered to mites and subsequently consumption is quantified based on the sclerotized, well preserved structures in the mite's fecal pellets. The assay was evaluated during 5 days, at 25 degrees C and 96% relative humidity, with three replicates for each nematode species. Every replicate consisted of a group of four mites isolated in an arena, to which 400 nematodes were transferred daily. The daily produced fecal pellets were mounted in Hoyer's medium for examination under a microscope. The nematode buccal stylets and cephalic frameworks were counted to estimate the number of nematodes consumed. It was estimated that a single mite daily ingested 18.3 +/- 0.8 (mean +/- SE) M. javanica (J(2) juveniles) or 41.6 +/- 7.2 P. coffeae (juveniles + adults), the maximal daily consumption being 34 M. javanica and 73 P. coffeae. The method showed to be practical, precise and suitable for laboratory studies in which nematophagous mites classified as engulfers are included.  相似文献

Until a vaccine against the new strain becomes available, the response to newly emerged pandemic influenza will consist of the use of antiviral drugs and measures that limit exposure to infectious individuals. These first-line defence measures include isolating cases upon diagnosis, reducing close contacts, the use of personal protective equipment and hygiene, and using antiviral drugs for treatment and prophylaxis. There are significant 'costs' associated with control measures, so to justify such interventions it is important to assess their potential to reduce transmission. In this paper, we determine the effect that a number of different antiviral interventions have on the reproduction number of infectives and the probability that an imported infection fades out, and determine parameter scenarios for which these interventions are able to eliminate an emerging pandemic of influenza. We also assess the role that health care workers play in transmission and the extent to which providing them with antiviral prophylaxis and personal protective equipment modifies this role. Our results indicate that this class requires protection to avoid a greatly disproportionate contribution to early infective numbers, and for the maintenance of a stable health care system. Further, we show that the role children play in increasing transmission is moderate, in spite of closer mixing with other children.  相似文献

A dramatic increase in the breeding population of geese has occurred over the past few decades at Svalbard. This may strongly impact the fragile ecosystems of the Arctic tundra because many of the ultra-oligotrophic freshwater systems experience enrichment from goose feces. We surveyed 21 shallow tundra ponds along a gradient of nutrient enrichment based on exposure to geese. Concentrations of total phosphorus (P) and dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) in the tundra ponds ranged from 2–76 to 2–23 μg l−1 respectively, yet there was no significant increase in phytoplankton biomass (measured as chlorophyll a; range: 0.6–7.3 μg l−1) along the nutrient gradient. This lack of response may be the result of the trophic structure of these ecosystems, which consists of only a two-trophic level food chain with high biomasses of the efficient zooplankton grazer Daphnia in the absence of fish and scarcity of invertebrate predators. Our results indicate that this may cause a highly efficient grazing control of phytoplankton in all ponds, supported by the fact that large fractions of the nutrient pools were bound in zooplankton biomass. The median percentage of Daphnia–N and Daphnia–P content to particulate (sestonic) N and P was 338 and 3009%, respectively, which is extremely high compared to temperate lakes. Our data suggest that Daphnia in shallow arctic ponds is heavily subsidized by major inputs of energy from other food sources (bacteria, benthic biofilm), which may be crucial to the persistence of strong top–down control of pelagic algae by Daphnia.  相似文献

Pine plantations of the southeastern USA are regional carbon (C) sinks. In spite of large increases in woody biomass due to advanced growing systems, studies have shown little or even negative effects on the C content of the extremely sandy soils of this region. Hence, it is important to understand the mechanisms that determine the impact of intensive forest management on soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration. This study was conducted to examine the C profile in a 4-year-old loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) plantation managed under two levels of management intensity (chemical understory control and fertilizer inputs). Soil organic C and nitrogen (N) pools were evaluated using two size fractionation methods, dry and wet sieving (2000–250 μm, 250–150 μm, 150–53 μm and <53 μm). Dry sieving was preferred over wet sieving for soil size fractionation, as it preserved more structure and water-soluble SOC components such as esters and amides and did not affect the N distribution. Diffuse Reflectance Infrared Fourier Transform Spectroscopy (DRIFTS) spectra were used to examine the chemical composition of the size fractions, which showed the presence of recently added organic matter in the largest sand fraction, as well as more decomposed organic matter in the <53 μm fraction. Intensive forest management reduced SOC in all three 2000–53 μm fractions, most likely due to reduced root input of understory plants that were controlled using herbicides. The 2000–250 μm fractions contained nearly half of the total SOC and showed a 23% decrease in C content due to the intensive management regime. Results from this study indicated the significance and responsiveness of sand size SOC fractions in Florida Spodosols. Results also showed that reductions in SOC due to intensive management occurred after four years and highlighted the need to understand the long-term impacts and the mechanisms responsible. In this paper we analyze a variation of a standard predator-prey model with type II functional response which represents predator-prey dynamics in the presence of some additional food to the predator. The aim is to study the consequences of providing additional food on the system dynamics. We conclude that handling times for the available foods play a key role in determining the eventual state of the ecosystem. It is interesting to observe that by varying the quality and quantity of additional food we can not only control and limit the prey, but also limit and eradicate the predators. In the context of biological pest control, the results caution the manager on the choice of quality and quantity of the additional food used for this purpose. An arbitrary choice may have opposite effects leading to increase in pest concentration and eradication of the predator. This study offers insight into the possible management strategies that involve manipulation of quality and supply level of additional food to predators, for the benefit of biological control. The theoretical conclusions agree with results of some practical biological control experiments.  相似文献

The functional genomics project “TrichoEST” was developed focused on different taxonomic groups of Trichoderma with biocontrol potential. Four cDNA libraries were constructed, using similar growth conditions, from four different Trichoderma strains: Trichoderma longibrachiatum T52, Trichoderma asperellum T53, Trichoderma virens T59, and Trichoderma sp. T78. In this study, we present the analysis of the 8,160 expressed sequence tags (ESTs) generated. Each EST library was independently assembled and 1,000–1,300 unique sequences were identified in each strain. First, we queried our collection of ESTs against the NCBI nonredundant database using the BLASTX algorithm. Moreover, using the Gene Ontology hierarchy, we performed the annotation of 40.9% of the unique sequences. Later, based on the EST abundance, we examined the highly expressed genes in the four strains. A hydrophobin was found as the gene expressed at the highest level in two of the strains, but we also found that other unique sequences similar to the HEX1, QID3, and NMT1 proteins were highly represented in at least two of the Trichoderma strains. The success of biological control is partly mediated by the longevity and reproductive success of beneficial insects. Availability of nectar and honeydew can improve the nutrition of parasitic insects, and thereby increase their longevity and realized fecundity. The egg parasitoid, Anaphes iole, showed strong gustatory perception of trehalulose, a carbohydrate found in homopteran honeydew. Chromatographic analysis demonstrated that enzymatic hydrolysis of sucrose, a common nectar sugar, proceeded at a faster rate than that of melezitose, a sugar common in aphid honeydew. A long-term bioassay showed that longevity was greater at 20 °C than at 27 °C, and at both temperatures survival was generally greatest for wasps provisioned with the three major nectar sugars, sucrose, glucose, and fructose. Patterns of food acceptance and utilization showed that A. iole accepted and utilized a broad range of sugars found in nature, including those found in nectar as well as honeydew. Glucose, fructose, and several oligosaccharides composed of these monosaccharide units appear to be more suitable for A. iole than other sugars tested. Evidence suggests that individual fitness benefits afforded by food sources are important for a time-limited parasitoid, and that continued investigations on the interface between nutrition and biological control are warranted for A. iole.  相似文献

Termites exploit microbially rich resources such as decayed wood and soil that are colonized by potentially pathogenic and parasitic fungi, bacteria, viruses, and nematodes. In colonies composed of thousands of individuals, the risk of infection among nestmates is significant, and individual and social behavior could involve various adaptations to resist disease and parasitism. Here we show that the dampwood termite Zootermopsis angusticollis (Hagen) exhibits a dosage dependent susceptibility to the soil nematode Steinernema carpocapsae (Weiser) (Mexican strain) and that this social insect significantly alters its behavior in response to this entomopathogenic roundworm. Relative to their baseline behavior, termites exposed to infective juveniles increased the frequency and duration of allogrooming and vibratory displays as well as two other novel behaviors, abdominal tip-raising and self-scratching. Whereas the first two behaviors likely reflect general adaptations to reduce susceptibility to a variety of pathogens and parasites, the latter behaviors might be specific to nematodes because they have never been observed in Z. angusticollis in any other pathogenic context. Our results support the hypotheses that behavioral responses in termites are important in the control of pathogenic and parasitic microorganisms and that termite susceptibility is socially mediated.  相似文献

Newly mated queens (NMQs) originating from monogyne red imported fire ant (Solenopsis invicta) colonies and following a mating flight, initiate new colonies by sealing themselves in a nuptial chamber and relying solely on their own fat and crop reserves, as well as no longer needed wing muscles to rear their first workers (claustral colony foundation). This method of colony-founding is rarely successful for polygyne-derived NMQs, whose low weight critically limits the number of first workers they are able to produce. However, this observation may be confounded by the parasitic microsporidium, Thelohania solenopsae, thus far found to persist only in association with polygyne colonies. Infections of this microsporidium reduce the weight of female alates and may explain why polygyne NMQs are unlikely to successfully found colonies claustrally. NMQs collected following mating flights in Gainesville and Ocala, Florida were sorted by weight, checked for insemination and T. solenopsae infection. Insemination levels were greater than 90% for all weight classes at both collection sites and were not related to infection. Infection levels were lower in Gainesville than Ocala, averaging 1.67% and 14.14%, respectively. Polygyne-derived NMQs collected in Ocala, defined here as weighing 12mg (social form correctly assigned in 85% of samples examined by PCR), had the highest infection levels, 25.37% (17/67) in 2003 and 21.43% (6/28) in 2004. We conclude that infection by T. solenopsae cannot be completely responsible for the inability of polygyne NMQs to claustrally establish colonies.  相似文献
