To provide a tool for studying regeneration in planarians, we have produced monoclonal antibodies against a variety of cells and tissues of the freshwater planarian Phagocata vivida (Ijima et Kaburaki). We obtained five kinds of monoclonal antibodies specific, respectively, to 1) the excretory system, 2) nerve cells, 3) rhabdoid-forming cells and body-surface mucus, 4) gastrodermal and epidermal cells, and 5) male germ cells and epidermis.  相似文献

Experiments of primary production were carried out at weekly intervals in the surface waters at one station (maximum depth of 20 m) in the Saguenay River, near Chicoutimi, during May–December 1978. The photic zone was very thin (maximum depth of 2 m). Phosphates are very low during the season sampling (maximum of 0.1 µat-g.–1). Maximum of production rates and biomass are respectively 3.5 mg C.m–3.h–1 and 3.7 mg.m–3. The river receives both industrial and urban runoff. Trace metals (Mercury, Copper, Lead, and Iron) seemed to be one of the important limiting factors for phytoplankton growth.

Effects of grazing on the quantity and quality of freshwater Aufwuchs   总被引:6,自引:5,他引:1  
Qualitative and quantitative measures of the Aufwuchs (scum flora) on artificial substrates in situ were used to evaluate the effects of grazing by freshwater pulmonate snails in a shallow pond in southeastern Michigan. Grazer densities of 216 snails/m2 marked reduced standing crop so that after 45 days grazed substrata had 6.46 mg dry weight, 604 µg C and 4.18 µg chlorophyll a as compared to controls with 30.62 mg dry weight, 3699 µg C and 6.29 µg chlorophyll a, all on a per dm2 basis.Grazing did not change carbon per mg dry matter but caused significant increases in both µg chlorophyll a (control, 0.206; and grazed, 0.649 µg chlorophyll a/mg dry weight, P < 0.01) and nitrogen (control, 8.3; and grazed, 24.2 µg N/mg dry weight, P < 0.001) after 45 days. Both abundance and diversity of the attached community was reduced by grazing from 24 taxa and 80,889 individuals/cm2 on control to 8 taxa and 501 individuals/cm2 on grazed substrates. Mean productivity of the Aufwuchs was significantly (P < 0.001) reduced by grazing from 76.3 µg C/(dm2·day) on control to 17.7 µg C/(dm2·day) on grazed substrata.Snails were very efficient at clearing smooth surfaces of living cells, detritus, and particulate inorganic matter. There was little evidence of selectivity except for an apparent inability to remove some of the smallest cells (e.g. Cocconeis sp.) probably for mechanical reasons.  相似文献

In Sathiar reservoir detritus plays a significant role as a means of promoting exchange between the bottom sediments and the column of water. The means by which recycling of the various components in the aquatic biosphere takes place are discussed. The amount of energy stored or that which is bound in detritus is substantially supported by the co-occurrence of chlorophyll, total phosphorus and total nitrogen in the detritus.  相似文献

Responses of net photosynthetic rates to temperature, irradiance, pH/inorganic carbon and diurnal rhythm were analyzed in 15 populations of eight freshwater red algal species in culture and natural conditions. Photosynthetic rates were determined by oxygen concentration using the light and dark bottles technique. Parameters derived from the photosynthesis–irradiance curves indicated adaptation to low irradiance for all freshwater red algae tested, confirming that they tend to occur under low light regimes. Some degree of photo‐inhibition (β= ‐0.33–0.01 mg O2 g?1 DW h?1 (μmol photons m?2 s?1)?1) was found for all species/populations analyzed, whereas light compensation points (Ic) were very low (≤ 2 μmol photons m‐ photons s?1) for most algae tested. Saturation points were low for all algae tested (Ik = 6–54 μmol photons m?2 s?1; Is = 20–170 umol photons m?2 s?1). Rates of net photosynthesis and dark respiration responded to the variation in temperature. Optimum temperature values for net photosynthesis were variable among species and populations so that best performances were observed under distinct temperature conditions (10, 15, 20 or 25°C). Rates of dark respiration exhibited an increasing trend with temperature, with highest values under 20–25°C. Results from pH experiments showed best photosynthetic performances under pH 8.5 or 6.5 for all but one species, indicating higher affinity for inorganic carbon as bicarbonate or indistinct use of bicarbonate and free carbon dioxide. Diurnal changes in photosynthetic rates revealed a general pattern for all algae tested, which was characterized by two relatively clear peaks, with some variations around it: a first (higher) during the morning (07.00–11.00 hours.) and a second (lower) in the afternoon (14.00–18.00 hours). Comparative data between the ‘Chantransia’ stage and the respective gametophyte for one Batrachospermum population revealed higher values (ca 2‐times) in the latter, much lower than previously reported. The physiological role of the ‘Chantransia’ stage needs to be better analyzed.  相似文献

Using confocal laser scanning and conventional light microscopy, the morphology and organization of the muscle fibres in a proprioceptor, the thoracic coxal muscle receptor organ (TCMRO), and the associated 'extrafusal' promotor muscle were investigated in two species of decapod crustacea, the crayfish Cherax destructor and the mud crab Scylla serrata . The diameter of the TCMROs was shown to increase distally, with an increase up to 350% recorded for the crayfish. The tapered shape of the crayfish TCMRO was demonstrated to amplify movements mechanically at the transducer region where the afferent nerves attach. Serial sectioning of the TCMROs, showed that the fibre number increased in the proximal to distal direction from 14 to 30 fibres in the crayfish and from 7 to 20 in the crab. Optical sectioning with the laser scanning confocal microscope revealed that the increase in fibre numbers was the result of muscle fibres branching in the distal third section of the TCMRO. The percentage of muscle tissue in the cross-sectional area in the TCMRO was found to be only 35.2% and 64.6% in the crayfish and crab, respectively. Longitudinal sectioning using laser scanning confocal microscopy revealed the average sarcomere length of the TCMRO muscle fibres of both species to be in the intermediate range for crustacean muscle fibres (4.1 ± 0.1 µm and 4.55 ± 0.34 µm for the crayfish and crab) compared with the long sarcomere muscle fibres in the associated promotor muscles (7.87 ± 0.2 and 10.6 ± 0.6 µm). The distinct morphology of the TCMRO muscle fibres – smaller diameter, intermediate sarcomere length and branching of fibres compared to the larger, long sarcomere promotor fibre muscle fibres – suggest that the TCMRO muscle fibres are specialized in their role of proprioception.  相似文献

Morphological correlates of diet were examined in 48 species of freshwater fishes from floodplain lakes in the central part of the Mamoré River (Bolivian Amazon). The species were classified, according to the percentage occurrence of seven food items, into eight broad trophic categories: mud feeders, algivores, herbivores, terrestrial invertivores and omnivores, carnivores, zooplanktivores, aquatic invertivores and piscivores. There were significant relationships between the diet and morphology of the fishes even when the effect of taxonomical relatedness between species was eliminated. Relative gut length was the main morphological variable used to order species on a carnivore to mud feeder gradient. Standard length and head and mouth size were the morphological variables most closely associated with prey size. Mud feeder, algivore and piscivore species appeared as the most dietary and morphologically specialized. These results support both the hypotheses that species morphology influences the diet and that morphological similarity is conserved even in comparison with taxonomically unrelated species.  相似文献

1. We investigated trophic interactions between benthic heterotrophic nanoflagellates (HNF) and oligochaetes and microcrustaceans (cladocerans and copepods) transferred from a silty, littoral freshwater habitat to laboratory microcosms. With a newly adapted experimental design we were able to compute (i) predation rates on benthic HNF by the tested metazoan organisms and (ii) growth rates of the natural benthic HNF population when losses because of this predation were excluded. 2. The experiments covered a temperature range of 4–27 °C and a fivefold variation of predator densities (September 2000–February 2002). For 60% of these experiments, significant predation of oligochaetes and microcrustaceans on benthic HNF was revealed. Predation rates on HNF ranged from 0 to 0.256 day?1. Growth rates of the benthic HNF assemblage varied from ?0.098 to 0.353 day?1; they were used to estimate the significance of the measured losses in comparison with possible other loss factors. 3. The data suggested that during the major part of the year a high percentage of the HNF production was consumed in the surficial sediment of the investigated system, resulting in a relatively constant and low HNF standing stock and an uncoupling of benthic bacteria and their protistan grazers. Top–down control by microcrustaceans and oligochaetes was identified as one significant, frequently prevailing regulatory factor, while other parameters responsible for the control of benthic HNF densities remain to be examined.  相似文献

SUMMARY 1. The freshwater bryozoan Cristatella mucedo , in common with other sessile, benthic freshwater taxa, has an unusual life history: sex occurs during a relatively brief period near the start of the growing season, and overwintering occurs in the form of asexually produced dormant propagules (statoblasts). Consistent observed heterozygosity (Ho) deficits in C. mucedo populations have previously suggested that inbreeding is common, although a possible contribution of a Wahlund effect to low Ho could not be discounted.
2. We have used microsatellite data in the first study based on codominant markers to genetically characterise maternal colonies and larval offspring of C. mucedo . The 'population' represented by the larvae was in Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium, which has previously been found in only one of 39 populations of C. mucedo . At least 64% of larvae were the products of outcrossing. We suggest that the unusual early timing of sex may be a strategy to maximise rates of outcrossing within populations of sessile freshwater invertebrates.  相似文献

Optimal foraging theory was used to explain selective foraging by the introduced signal crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus) on the thin-shelled common pond snail (Lymnaea stagnalis). Crayfish predation efficiency was studied in relation to habitat complexity and snail size. In a pool experiment (area 1.3 m2) single adult crayfish were allowed to feed on four size classes of snails for one week. A pair-wise preference trial (aquarium experiment) tested if adult crayfish selectively predated on particular size classes of snail and if prey value (expressed as snail dry mass per handling time) could explain the size range of snails chosen. Crayfish preferred the smallest size classes of snails in both pool and aquaria experiments. In the pool experiment crayfish had a strong effect on snail survival. Habitat complexity did not affect overall snail survival, but resulted in reduced predation pressure on the smallest size classes of snails. Handling time and shell-thickness increased exponentially with increasing snail size, and the two smallest size classes had the highest prey values. The results suggest that crayfish can structure the abundance and size distribution of thin-shelled snails, through size-selective predation and reduction of macrophytes. The mechanisms behind the choice of snails may be based on prey value and reduced exposure time to predators and conspecifics. Crayfish effects on snail size distribution may be less pronounced in complex habitats such as macrophyte beds.
