We evaluated the oviposition response of gravid Aedes albopictus (Skuse) to six organic infusions. Laboratory and field‐placed oviposition cups baited with water oak (Quercus nigra L.), longleaf pine (Pinus palustris P. Mill), or St. Augustine grass (Stenotaphrum secundatum (Walt.) Kuntze), as well as binary infusion mixtures of each, were used. In addition, a triple‐cage, dual port olfactometer was used to measure upwind response of gravid individuals to these infusions. We found that Ae. albopictus deposited more eggs in infusion‐baited cups compared with water alone. Moreover, significantly more eggs were laid in the water oak and a water oak‐pine mixture as compared with the St. Augustine grass infusion in laboratory bioassays. However, a negative upwind response was observed with longleaf pine infusion in the olfactometer. In field cages, significantly more eggs were deposited in infusion‐baited cups as compared with water alone and a greater percentage of eggs were deposited in cups containing a water oak and the water oak‐longleaf pine mixture as compared with cups containing single infusions or their mixtures.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Between July and September 2005, a preliminary sampling of the elderly population of Hizen-Oshima Island, Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan was conducted by the local hospital's nursing staff. RESULTS: Reported here are preliminary results from this sample of 27 individuals with an average age of 71 years. Their ages ranged from 51 to 82 years, with a standard deviation (sd) of 7.4 years. In total, 33 aspects of physical and physiological variation were assessed on these 15 women and 12 men. As expected from previous studies of Japanese elders, our sample shows slightly elevated average blood pressure (142/81 mmHg, sd 16/10), but they are relatively lean (waist/hip = .9: sd 0.06) when compared to European or American standards. However, their average total cholesterol (TC = 210 mg/dl, sd = 42.8) is high compared to standards, as is their high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLc = 55.4 mg/dl, sd = 15.1). Means, standard deviations (sd), ranges, and upper bounds for quartile cut-points for all 10 variables used in the calculation of allostatic load (AL) were assessed. The overall average estimate for AL in this sample is 3.1 (sd = 1.58) and ranges from 1-7. CONCLUSION: AL shows variability across men and women, has little correlation with age, and is associated with physiological variation in blood glucose, dopamine, and uric acid.  相似文献

The North Fork Holston River (NFHR) is historically renowned for having one of the most diversity rich unionid populations (Unionidae) worldwide; however, in recent decades, drastic reductions in mussel diversity, abundance, and recruitment have been documented. Unionid declines have been blamed on anthropogenic influences, specifically mercury-contaminated wastewater from a now closed chlorine-alkali plant in Saltville, VA. The objective of this research was to evaluate total mercury (Hg) contamination of sediments and interstitial waters in the NFHR beginning below Saltville and downstream for approximately 50 river miles. Mercury contaminated sediments and interstitial water were found downstream of the closed plant with the highest sediment concentration of 2.82 mg/kg dry weight total Hg found at river mile (rm) 80 and the highest interstitial water value at rm 30.4 with 2.1 μg/l. After 60-d in situ testing, total Hg concentrations in Asian clam (Corbicula fluminea) tissues were found to range from 0.016 to 0.13 mg/kg, while resident clams had Hg concentrations of 0.094 and 0.11 mg/kg wet weight. Although chronic toxicity was not observed, based on Corbicula growth and survival tests, nor in testing with cladocerans, mercury contamination is still a persistent problem at sites in the NFHR below the closed plant with negative correlations between mean clam growth and sediment Hg concentrations.  相似文献

The Asian tiger mosquito Aedes albopictus, native to Southeast Asia, has invaded a wide range of tropical and temperate areas worldwide. Recent studies pointed out that invasive populations from Europe harbored reduced bacterial microbiota compared to the native populations. Beside bacteria, mosquitoes also contain fungal communities that have so far been largely ignored. To investigate whether the mosquito invasion process displays a similar impact on fungal diversity, we compared the mycobiota structure of three autochthonous mosquito populations in Vietnam and six populations recently introduced in France and Madagascar. All mosquito populations host a locally structured fungal community and carry a “core mycobiota” dominated by yeasts. However, invasive populations from France and Madagascar harbor a lower fungal diversity compared to Vietnamese populations. These results suggest that similar factors shape the overall composition of the mosquito-associated microbiota during the invasion process as bacterial and fungal communities demonstrate a loss of diversity.  相似文献

Bats are a unique mammalian group, which belong to one of the largest and most diverse mammalian radiations, but their early diversification is still poorly understood, and conflicting hypotheses have emerged regarding their biogeographic history. Understanding their diversification is crucial for untangling the enigmatic evolutionary history of bats. In this study, we elucidated the rate of diversification and the biogeographic history of extant bat lineages using genus‐level chronograms. The results suggest that a rapid adaptive radiation persisted from the emergence of crown bats until the Early Eocene Climatic Optimum, whereas there was a major deceleration in diversification around 35–49 Ma. There was a positive association between changes in the palaeotemperature and the net diversification rate until 35 Ma, which suggests that the palaeotemperature may have played an important role in the regulation of ecological opportunities. By contrast, there were unexpectedly higher diversification rates around 25–35 Ma during a period characterized by intense and long‐lasting global cooling, which implies that intrinsic innovations or adaptations may have released some lineages from the intense selective pressures associated with these severe conditions. Our reconstruction of the ancestral distribution suggests an Asian origin for bats, thereby indicating that the current panglobal but disjunct distribution pattern of extant bats may be related to events involving seriate cross‐continental dispersal and local extinction, as well as the influence of geological events and the expansion and contraction of megathermal rainforests during the Tertiary.  相似文献

  1. Introgressive hybridisation between two invasive species has the potential to contribute to their invasion success and provide genetic resiliency to rapidly adapt to new environments. Additionally, differences in the behaviour of hybrids may lead to deleterious ecosystem effects that compound any negative impacts of the invading parental species.
  2. Invasive silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) and bighead carp (Hypophthalmichthys nobilis) provide an opportunity to evaluate how hybridisation may influence the behaviour, dispersal, and spread of an invasive species introgressive complex. In order to investigate the role hybrids may have in the invasion ecology of bigheaded carps, we examined the distribution, movements, and environmental cues for movement of two invasive fishes and their hybrids in the Illinois River (U.S.A.).
  3. Early generation hybrids (e.g. F1,F2, and first-generation backcross individuals) composed a greater proportion of the population at the invasion front where abundances of bigheaded carp were low. A greater proportion of early hybrids passed through dams upstream towards the invasion front than did other hybrids and parental species.
  4. The movements and environmental cues for movement of late-generation backcrosses (more genetically similar to parental genotype) were not different from the parental species with which they shared the most alleles. Although the direction of the relationship between movement and environment was sometimes different for the parental species and associated advanced generation hybrids, these results indicate that management for parental species will also affect most hybrids.
  5. Although early generation hybrids are rare, our results indicate they may disperse towards low-density population zones (i.e. invasion fronts) or are produced at greater frequency in low-density areas. These rare hybrids have the potential to produce a variety of unique genetic combinations that could result in more rapid adaptation of a non-native population to their invaded range potentially facilitating the establishment of invasive species.

The importance of structural variants (SVs) for human phenotypes and diseases is now recognized. Although a variety of SV detection platforms and strategies that vary in sensitivity and specificity have been developed, few benchmarking procedures are available to confidently assess their performances in biological and clinical research. To facilitate the validation and application of these SV detection approaches, we established an Asian reference material by characterizing the genome of an Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-immortalized B lymphocyte line along with identified benchmark regions and high-confidence SV calls. We established a high-confidence SV callset with 8938 SVs by integrating four alignment-based SV callers, including 109× Pacific Biosciences (PacBio) continuous long reads (CLRs), 22× PacBio circular consensus sequencing (CCS) reads, 104× Oxford Nanopore Technologies (ONT) long reads, and 114× Bionano optical mapping platform, and one de novo assembly-based SV caller using CCS reads. A total of 544 randomly selected SVs were validated by PCR amplification and Sanger sequencing, demonstrating the robustness of our SV calls. Combining trio-binning-based haplotype assemblies, we established an SV benchmark for identifying false negatives and false positives by constructing the continuous high-confidence regions (CHCRs), which covered 1.46 gigabase pairs (Gb) and 6882 SVs supported by at least one diploid haplotype assembly. Establishing high-confidence SV calls for a benchmark sample that has been characterized by multiple technologies provides a valuable resource for investigating SVs in human biology, disease, and clinical research.  相似文献

Dryocosmus kuriphilus (Hymenoptera: Cynipidae) was first detected in Galicia (NW Spain) in 2014. The wasp then began to spread by stratified dispersal, with the local abundance increasing thereafter. In this study, we analysed location data on wasp-attacked trees, with the following aims: (i) to determine the relative importance of short distance dispersal (SDD) and long-distance dispersal (LDD) on the geographical expansion of the wasp; and (ii) to assess whether the spatial clusters of areas with high and low numbers of attacked trees correspond to areas with different infestation levels and thus whether these areas can be considered suitable proxies for pest abundance. A Random Forest algorithm was used to identify the factors that best discriminate hotspot and coldspot areas. Distance matrix analysis was used considering a conservative expansion rate of the population front of 14 km/year as the threshold for distinguishing SDD and LDD events. Gradients of attacked tree abundance were delineated using the Getis-Ord Gi* statistic. Although LDD events represented a small proportion of the locally dispersing offspring, they determined the rate of spread across the landscape. The infestation level differed significantly between hotspot and coldspot areas, which were therefore used as proxies for D. kuriphilus population abundance. Factors that were favourable or unfavourable in relation to population abundance were mainly associated with maximum temperatures in the summer months. Metrics of composition and configuration of host plant habitat proved less important than the time since invasion and the effect was partly masked by tree diversity at community scale.  相似文献
