In many anuran species, males vocalize to attract females but will grasp any female that comes within reach and retain their hold unless displaced by a rival male. Thus, female anurans may face strong selection to repel unwanted suitors, but no mechanism is known for doing so. We suggest that a defensive trait (the ability to inflate the body to ward off attack) has been co-opted for this role: by inflating their bodies, females are more difficult for males to grasp and hence, it is easier for another male to displace an already amplexed rival. Inflating a model female cane toad (Bufo marinus) strongly reduced a male''s ability to maintain amplexus; and females who were experimentally prevented from inflating their bodies experienced no successful takeovers from rival males, in contrast to control females. Thus, the ability of a female cane toad to inflate her body may allow her to manipulate the outcome of male–male competition. This overlooked mechanism of anuran mate choice may reflect a common evolutionary pattern, whereby females co-opt defensive traits for use in sexual selection. 相似文献

Notophthalmus (Triturus) viridescens, a urodele amphibian (newt) common to the Eastern United States, is a promising subject for developmental and regeneration studies. We have available a monoclonal antibody shown to be specific in many vertebrates for rod opsin, the membrane apoprotein of the visual pigment rhodopsin. This antibody to an N-terminal epitope, by rigorous biochemical and immunological criteria, recognizes only rod photoreceptor cells of the retina in light-and electron-microscopic immunocytochemistry. To determine the ontogeny and localization of rhodopsin in developing rods as an indicator of function in the embryonic urodele retina, we have utilized this antibody in the immunofluorescence technique on sections of developing N. viridescens. It was applied to serial sections of the eye region of Harrison stage 28 (optic vesicle) through stage 43 (most adult retina histology complete) embryos, and subsequently visualized with biotinylated species antibody followed by extravidin fluorescein isothiocyanate. The first positive reaction to rhodopsin could be detected in two to four cells (total) of the stage 37 embryonic eye, in the region of the central retinal primordium where the photoreceptors will be found. Some indications of retinal outer nuclear and inner plexiform layers could be seen at this time. Later embryonic stages demonstrated increasing numbers of positive cells in the future photoreceptor outer nuclear layer and outer and inner segments, spreading even to the peripheral retina. Nevertheless, by stale 43, no positive cells could be found at the dorsal or ventral retinal margins. Thus, biochemical differentiation of a photoreceptor population in the urodele retina occurs at a stage before retinal histogenesis is complete. The total maturation of retinal rods occurs topographically over a long period until the adult distribution is achieved.

Spectral sensitivity functions were measured between 334 nm and 683 nm in Salamandra salamandra by utilizing two behavioral reactions: the negative phototactic response, and the prey catching behavior elicited by a moving worm dummy. The action spectrum of the negative phototactic response revealed 3 pronounced maxima: at 360–400 nm, at 520–540 nm, and at 600–640 nm. In the range around 450 nm, there was a reaction gap where sensitivity could not be measured. The action spectrum of the prey catching behavior was entirely different: maximal sensitivity was found at 500 nm and at 570 nm. Between 500 nm and 334 nm sensitivity decreased continuously for about 1 log unit (Fig. 6).Experiments under chromatic adaptation using the prey catching behavior indicate that the relatively high sensitivity in the ultraviolet range is not due to a separate ultraviolet photoreceptor, but is based on the responses of a photoreceptor maximally sensitive at about 500 nm.Color discrimination was tested by moving a colored worm dummy within a differently colored surround of equal subjective brightness. The salamanders were able to discriminate blue from green, and green from red (Fig. 10). Summary Fertilization ofCynops pyrrhogaster (Japanese newt) coelomic eggs was studied in the absence of jelly envelope material or synthetic high polymer. An undiluted sperm fluid from the vas deferens fertilized coelomic eggs in the absence of the jelly envelope material or synthetic high polymer. The fertilized eggs developed beyond gastrulae and formed tail bud embryos. These results indicate that the fertilization process does not depend upon the presence of jelly envelope material or synthetic high polymer and that the sperms within the vas deferens are already capable of fertilizing the eggs inC. pyrrhogaster. The sperm suspension in Holtfreter's balanced salt solution (H-sperm) fertilized the coelomic eggs without the jelly envelope material or synthetic high polymer. These eggs had been suspended in Holtfreter's balanced salt solution (H) or in 1/20 strength H (1/20 H) prior to insemination (H-eggs or 1/20 H-eggs). In contrast, the sperm suspension in 1/20 H (1/20 H-sperm) did not fertilize 1/20 H-eggs, but dit H-eggs. In the latter case, H surrounding the eggs may affect sperms, allowing them to be fertilized. The 1/20 H-sperms regained their ability to fertilize 1/20 H-eggs on re-exposure to H. The 1/20 H-sperm also fertilized jelly eggs. The results of the dejellied egg experiment showed the same pattern. These results indicate that the sperms within the vas deferens lose their capacity to fertilize 1/20 H-eggs on exposure to low ionic strength solution (1/20 H); this capacity is restored by exposure to high ionic strength solution (H) or to jelly envelope. 相似文献

Summary In the early development of the urodele amphibian Pleurodeles waltl, a fibronectin-containing extracellular matrix underlies the inner face of the blastocoel roof. When gastrulation occurs, the fibronectin fibrils provide a suitable substrate for mesodermal-cell migration. Delay in morphogenetic movements of gastrulation has been described in embryos from mutant females (ac/ac) of Pleurodeles waltl. Studies of abnormal mutant gastrulae with fluorescent lectins and immunostaining for fibronectin reveal that they lack a normal matrix. The fibronectin-containing extracellular material always gives rise to a granular pattern without fibronectin-fibril formation. Fibronectin and 51 syntheses occur normally in maternal-effect embryos. Summary I used a mark-recapture study to estimate home areas for 107 red-backed salamanders (Plethodon cinereus) in a natural forest habitat. Both males and females of this species defend feeding territories, but I presume that some individuals in this relatively highdensity population (approximately 2.8 salamanders per m2) are nonterritorial floaters. Although territorial salamanders exhibited greater numbers of tail autotomies, they had significantly longer relative tail lengths. This difference suggests that territorial individuals gain benefits from territorial ownership. From the observation that home area size was inversely correlated with body size, I infer that larger animals gained higher quality foraging areas. Home areas of adults were significantly more segregated intrasexually and more aggregated intersexually than would be expected from a random distribution. Furthermore, intersexual overlap of home areas was significantly greater than intrasexual home area overlap. Territorial defense of feeding areas by male and female red-backed salamanders therefore also may play a role in mating behavior. 相似文献

Spermatogenesis is a complex morphogenetic process in which microfilaments and microtubules have been shown to play an important role. The last steps of Xenopus spermatogenesis, i.e., the corkscrew shaping of the sperm head, have been followed to study actin and microtubule distribution by conventional and immunoelectron microscopy. During sperm head morphogenesis, actin is absent in the elongating spermatids, but it is present in the Sertoli cells where results localized at the periphery of their cytoplasm that surrounds the developing germ cells. Summary Using freeze-fracture electron microscopy and fluorescent dye injection we have analysed the contacts between cells of the deeper endoderm taken from neurulae ofXenopus laevis. Endodermal cells in situ have large 1.5 m diameter gap junctions composed of 8 nm P-face particles and corresponding E-face pits. Beside gap junctions, particle aggregates typical of desmosomal plaques are present but there are no tight junctions. The dissociation of endoderm into single cells involves profound structural alterations in the surface membrane including the complete disappearance of junctional structures among them gap junctions. The reaggregation of endoderm cells leads to the restoration of the surface membrane IMP (Intra Membrane Particle) pattern and, after ca. 30 min, to the establishment of functional pathways allowing for the intercellular transfer of fluorescent dye. Concomitantly gap junctions reappear. The observation that the dissociation and reaggregation of endodermal cells involves IMP alterations which go beyond the cell junctions themselves is discussed as an adaptation of the plasma membrane to changing environmental conditions. 相似文献

The skull of Greererpeton burkemorani Romer, a temnospondyl amphibian from the Upper Mississippian at Greer, West Virginia is described. A detailed account of the stapes of a Mississippian amphibian is given for the first time and its function is discussed. It is suggested that the stapes formed the principal element of support for the back of the braincase and resisted potential dislocation of the otico-occipital region from the skull roof during contraction of the hypaxial musculature.
Greererpeton is included in the Colosteidae and an amended diagnosis of the family is given. Erpetosaurus differs from Colosteus, Greererpeton and Pholidogaster in the pattern of bones in the skull roof and palate, the dentition and the otic region and, consequently, it is removed from the Colosteidae. The Temnospondyli are considered to be a monophyletic group characterized by the development of a connection between the dorsal portion of the occipital arch, the exoccipital bones, and the skull roof. The loxommatids are removed from the Temnospondyli as they retain the plesiomorphic condition of braincase attachment which relies exclusively on derivatives of the auditory capsules.
On the basis of similarities in the structure of the braincase, palate and manus it is suggested that microsaurs are the collateral descendants (sister group) of temnospondyls. This relationship may account for the large number of similarities in the three living groups of Amphibia: Anura are generally believed to have descended from temnospondyls, while the Urodela and Apoda are often considered to have descended from microsaurs. These systematic conclusions endorse the recent suggestions that neither the Lepospondyli nor the Labyrinthodontia are natural groups, and both terms should be abandoned. 相似文献
