Based on light and scanning electron microscopic examination of their morphology, the dentition on both the premaxilla and dentary of Andersonia (Amphiliidae) and Siluranodon (Schilbeidae) catfishes is described from samples taken from tributaries of the White Nile in south‐western Ethiopia. These monotypic African genera were previously believed to lack teeth on the lower jaw in Andersonia and on both jaws in Siluranodon . Siluranodon exhibits an ontogenetic reduction: teeth were less frequently found in larger individuals than in smaller ones. In contrast to the adults of all other schilbeids, whose oral teeth are arranged in multiserial (or at least, biserial) bands, Siluranodon has uniserial teeth on both the premaxilla and the dentary. The adaptive, ontogenetic and phylogenetic aspects of jaw‐tooth reduction in catfishes are discussed. 相似文献

A cell-detaching reactor was developed to collect cells growing on microcarriers for inoculation between stepwise-expanded
bioreactors. It consisted of a trypsinization zone and a separation zone, which were separated by a 200-mesh stainless steel
screen. The screen allowed the cells only to pass through to the next bioreactor, after the cells have been trypsinized and
detached from microcarriers. The operating feasibility of the cell-detaching reactor was tested with anchorage-dependent recombinant
Chinese hamster ovary (rCHO) and African green monkey kidney (Vero) cells. rCHO and Vero cells were first cultured in a small
microcarrier bioreactor, and then inoculated via the cell-detaching reactor into either a packed-bed bioreactor (for rCHO
cells) or a larger microcarrier bioreactor (for Vero cells). For rCHO cells, the cell density reached 1.3 × 107 cells/ml in the perfusion culture, and Vero cells reached 1.3 × 106 cells/ml in the batch culture. 相似文献

Though insectivory by large-bodied gorillas may be unexpected, researchers have reported it in all populations of gorillas
studied to date. Our study of 2 well monitored groups of western gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) at Bai Hokou in Dzanga-Ndoki National Park, Central African Republic provides information on frequency and variability of
termite consumption (the most commonly eaten insect) as well as some of the first direct observations of the behavior. Pooled
data from both groups indicate termite feeding on 34% and 83% of days, through fecal analysis and feeding trails, respectively.
Direct observations revealed that termite feeding occurred on 91% of the days for 1 group, in which the silverback fed on
termites during 13% of all feeding scans, making termites the most commonly observed food item. The group that had a higher
density of termite mounds in its home range consumed termites more frequently than the other group did. A higher proportion
of fecal samples from the silverbacks contained termite remains than the ones from adult females and juveniles. Termite consumption
was lower during the dry season, but it does not correlate with rainfall, measures of fruit availability, or fruit consumption.
Displacements at termite mounds occurred more than expected, indicating that they are a patchy, sought-after food resource.
Gorillas did not use tools to extract termites, but they used 2 different techniques to remove them from the cells. Though
culture or social traditions may cause the variation in termite consumption across sites, further investigation of termite
availability and consumption is necessary to rule out ecological and methodological explanations for observed variations. 相似文献

The late Cenozoic climate of East Africa is punctuated by episodes of short, alternating periods of extreme wetness and aridity, superimposed on a regime of subdued moisture availability exhibiting a long-term drying trend. These periods of extreme climate variability appear to correlate with maxima in the 400-thousand-year (kyr) component of the Earth's eccentricity cycle. Prior to 2.7 Ma the wet phases appear every 400 kyrs, whereas after 2.7 Ma, the wet phases appear every 800 kyrs, with periods of precessional-forced extreme climate variability at 2.7-2.5 Ma, 1.9-1.7 Ma, and 1.1-0.9 Ma before present. The last three major lake phases occur at the times of major global climatic transitions, such as the onset of Northern Hemisphere Glaciation (2.7-2.5 Ma), intensification of the Walker Circulation (1.9-1.7 Ma), and the Mid-Pleistocene Revolution (1.0-0.7 Ma). High-latitude forcing is required to compress the Intertropical Convergence Zone so that East Africa becomes locally sensitive to precessional forcing, resulting in rapid shifts from wet to dry conditions. These periods of extreme climate variability may have provided a catalyst for evolutionary change and driven key speciation and dispersal events amongst mammals and hominins in East Africa. 相似文献

Fusion between the os centrale and the scaphoid has played a central role in many functional and phylogenetic interpretations of hominoid evolution. In particular, scaphoid-centrale fusion shared among African apes and humans has been interpreted as an adaptation in knuckle-walkers, an exaptation in hominins, and has been offered as evidence for a knuckle-walking origin of bipedalism. However, discrepancies in the literature concerning the taxa in which this scaphoid-centrale fusion occurs, as well as the timing and/or frequency of this fusion, have confounded the significance of this trait. This study provides an historical review of the literature on scaphoid-centrale fusion in primates and the first formal investigation into the timing and frequency of this character among primates, with a focus on extant hominoids. Results indicate that there is a significant difference in the timing and frequency of scaphoid-centrale fusion in African apes and humans compared to Asian apes, suggesting that prenatal or early postnatal fusion among hominines is a synapomorphy. Scaphoid-centrale fusion does not occur randomly within primates. Instead, only Homininae and some members of Lemuroidea show consistent and ontogenetically early fusion of these carpals. The consistent occurrence of this trait within only two primate clades and a clear heterochronic trend in timing and frequency of scaphoid-centrale fusion among hominines suggest that this character is primarily phylogenetically controlled. We could not falsify the hypothesis that scaphoid-centrale fusion in African apes is indeed related to midcarpal stability in knuckle-walking, but neither were we able to find direct biomechanical or kinematic evidence to support this hypothesis. A more definitive answer to the question of the functional significance of scaphoid-centrale fusion will have to await more detailed analyses of great ape wrist kinematics. 相似文献

Non-invasive endocrine methods enable investigation of the relationship between ecological variation and ovarian activity and how this impacts on demographic processes. The underlying physiological factors driving high variation in inter-calving intervals among multi-parous African elephants offer an interesting system for such an investigation. This study investigates the relationship between Normalized Differential Vegetation Index (NDVI), an ecosystem surrogate measure of primary productivity, and fecal progestin concentrations among wild female elephants. Matched fecal samples and behavioral data on reproductive activity were collected from 37 focal individuals during the two-year study. Linear mixed models were used to explore the relationship between fecal 5alpha-pregnane-3-ol-20-one concentrations and the independent variables of NDVI, calf sex, female age, gestation day, and time since last parturition. Among both non-pregnant and pregnant females, fecal 5alpha-pregnane-3-ol-20-one concentrations were significantly correlated with time-specific NDVI indicating a strong relationship between ecological conditions and endocrine activity regulating reproduction. In addition, the age of a female and time since her last parturition impacted hormone concentrations. These results indicate that the identification of an individual's reproductive status from a single hormone sample is possible, but difficult to achieve in practice since numerous independent factors, particularly season, impact fecal hormone concentrations. Regardless of season, however, fecal 5alpha-pregnane-3-ol-20-one concentrations below 1 microg/g were exclusively collected from non-pregnant females, which could be used as a threshold value to identify non-pregnant individuals. Collectively the information generated contributes to a better understanding of environmental regulation of reproductive endocrinology in wild elephant populations, information salient to the management and manipulation of population dynamics in this species. 相似文献

The paper deals with the complex leaves of three species of the aquatic genus Marathrum (M. minutiflorum, M. rubrum and M. schiedeanum). It is shown that they represent pinnately ramified ensiform leaves. The dissection of the leaves contributes to surface
enlargement and thus to improvement of their hydrophylls function. The ensiform structure is confirmed by the transverse position
of the sheathing lower leaf zone and the subsequent intercalary elongational growth proceeding in the median plane towards
the abaxial side of the leaf (upper leaf zone). The petiole continues into the rachis-like central axis of the blade from
which pinnate-like segments diverge at the adaxial and abaxial edge of the ensiform blade. The segments give rise to tufts
of clavate enations that end in long filaments. The filigree pinnately segmented ensiform leaves of Marathrum are interpreted as a further development of the fan-shaped and irregularly lobate ensiform leaves occurring in Mourera and Apinagia. Pinnately ramified ensiform leaves obviously evolved in convergence to the common type of pinnate leaves found in angiosperms. 相似文献

Transferrins, found in invertebrates and vertebrates, form a physiologically important family of proteins playing a major role in iron acquisition and transport, defense against microbial pathogens, growth and differentiation. These proteins are bilobal in structure and each lobe is composed of two domains divided by a cleft harboring an iron atom. Vertebrate transferrins comprise of serotransferrins, lactoferrins and ovotransferrins. In mammals serotransferrins transport iron in physiological fluids and deliver it to cells, while lactoferrins scavenge iron, limiting its availability to invading microbes. In oviparous vertebrates there is only one transferrin gene, expressed either in the liver to be delivered to physiological fluids as serotransferrin, or in the oviduct with a final localization in egg white as ovotransferrin. Being products of one gene sero- and ovotransferrin are identical at the amino-acid sequence level but with different, cell specific glycosylation patterns. Our knowledge of the mechanisms of transferrin iron binding and release is based on sequence and structural data obtained for human serotransferrin and hen and duck ovotransferrins. No sequence information about other ovotransferrins was available until our recent publication of turkey, ostrich, and red-eared turtle (TtrF) ovotransferrin mRNA sequences [Ciuraszkiewicz, J., Olczak, M., Watorek, W., 2006. Isolation, cloning and sequencing of transferrins from red-eared turtle, African ostrich and turkey. Comp. Biochem. Physiol. 143 B, 301-310]. In the present paper, ten new reptilian mRNA transferrin sequences obtained from the Nile crocodile (NtrF), bearded dragon (BtrF), Cuban brown anole (AtrF), veiled and Mediterranean chameleons (VtrF and KtrF), sand lizard (StrF), leopard gecko (LtrF), Burmese python (PtrF), African house snake (HtrF), and grass snake (GtrF) are presented and analyzed. Nile crocodile and red-eared turtle transferrins have a disulphide bridge pattern identical to known bird homologues. A partially different disulphide bridge pattern was found in the Squamata (snakes and lizards). The possibility of a unique interdomain disulphide bridge was predicted for LtrF. Differences were found in iron-binding centers from those of previously known transferrins. Substitutions were found in the iron-chelating residues of StrF and TtrF and in the synergistic anion-binding residues of NtrF. In snakes, the transferrin (PtrF, HtrF and GtrF) N-lobe "dilysine trigger" occurring in all other known transferrins was not found, which indicates a different mechanism of iron release. 相似文献

Summary. Trypanosomatids depend on spermidine for growth and survival. Consequently, enzymes involved in spermidine synthesis and utilization,
i.e. arginase, ornithine decarboxylase (ODC), S-adenosylmethionine decarboxylase (AdoMetDC), spermidine synthase, trypanothione synthetase (TryS), and trypanothione reductase
(TryR), are promising targets for drug development. The ODC inhibitor α-difluoromethylornithine (DFMO) is about to become
a first-line drug against human late-stage gambiense sleeping sickness. Another ODC inhibitor, 3-aminooxy-1-aminopropane (APA),
is considerably more effective than DFMO against Leishmania promastigotes and amastigotes multiplying in macrophages. AdoMetDC inhibitors can cure animals infected with isolates from
patients with rhodesiense sleeping sickness and leishmaniasis, but have not been tested on humans. The antiparasitic effects
of inhibitors of polyamine and trypanothione formation, reviewed here, emphasize the relevance of these enzymes as drug targets.
By taking advantage of the differences in enzyme structure between parasite and host, it should be possible to design new
drugs that can selectively kill the parasites. 相似文献
