Chlorella fusca (Shihira et Krauss) strain C-1.1.10 was grown under three different light qualities (red, white or blue light) in homocontinuous cultures. Under electron microscopy, blue light cultures showed enlarged cells, thinner cell walls and lower starch content than red light cells. Under blue light, the degree of stacking of the thylakoid membranes was significantly lower than under white or red light conditions. Changing the light from blue to red the ratio of exposed to appressed membranes was doubled. Compared to red light cells, blue light cells exhibited higher photosynthetic rates per chlorophyll molecule and contained less chlorophyll per dry weight. Blue light stimulated the content of soluble protein as well as that of soluble carbohydrates. The dry weight productivity per unit time was enhanced under blue light conditions. The thylakoid protein complexes which are generally assumed to be localized in the exposed membranes were found in higher concentrations under blue light than under red light. In blue light, both the Photosystem II/Photosystem I ratio and the ratio of light-harvesting chlorophyll protein to P-700 chlorophyll a -protein were lower than in red light. Blue light cells contained twice the concentration of cytochrome f , which correlates well with their higher photosynthetic capacity. When altering the light quality, the degree of change in the reaction center complexes was much lower than expected given the corresponding degree of change in the ratio of exposed to appressed membranes. These results are discussed in light of the question as to whether the variation in the stoichiometry of the laterally distributed complexes can be explained by changes in the degree of stacking alone.  相似文献

Summary The ultrastructure of the sternal glands of the males ofThrips validus is consistent with the hypothesis that they are involved in pheromone production. The secretory cells, which are strongly modified epidermal cells, are characterized by the abundance of mitochondria and the presence of agranular, tubular endoplasmic reticulum (ATER) and microbodies. Each of the numerous apical microvilli encloses one or several tubular extensions of ATER. Some mitochondria are in close contact with ATER tubules. The mitochondrial matrix is probably involved in the elaboration of the secretory product, which is extruded and possibly modified by the agranular reticulum. The secretion is sudanophilic, but not osmiophilic. No lipid droplets are found in the cytoplasm. The major light-harvesting chlorophyll a/b complex (LHCIIb) of photosystem (PS) II functions by harvesting light energy and by limiting and balancing the energy flow directed towards the PSI and PSII reaction centers. The complex is predominantly trimeric; however, the monomeric form may play a role in one or several of the regulatory functions of LHCIIb. In this work the dissociation temperature was measured of trimeric LHCIIb isolated from Pisum thylakoids and inserted into liposomes made of various combinations of thylakoid lipids at various protein densities. Dissociation was measured by monitoring a trimer-specific circular dichroism signal in the visible range. The LHCIIb density in the membrane significantly affected the trimer dissociation temperature ranging from 70 °C at an LHCIIb concentration comparable to or higher than the one in thylakoid grana, to 65 °C at the density estimated in stromal lamellae. Omitting one thylakoid lipid from the liposomes had virtually no effect on the thermal trimer stability in most cases except when digalactosyl diacylglycerol (DGDG) was omitted which caused a drop in the apparent dissociation temperature by 2 °C. In liposomes containing only one lipid species, DGDG and, even more so, monogalactosyl diacylglycerol (MGDG) increased the thermal stability of LHCIIb trimers whereas phosphatidyl diacylglycerol (PG) significantly decreased it. The lateral pressure exerted by the non-bilayer lipid MGDG did not significantly influence LHCII trimer stability.  相似文献

Since its emergence as a pest of grapevine about 150 years ago, studies on the life cycle and mode of reproduction of grape phylloxera ( Daktulosphaira vitifoliae Fitch) (Homoptera: Phylloxeridae) have been of considerable scientific interest and importance for applied viticulture. The life cycle of grape phylloxera, as described in the mid to late nineteenth century, is still subject to discussion and confusion. In this article, we aim to provide for the first time an overview of the reported life cycle strategies of grape phylloxera by summarizing documented observations, the results of controlled field and laboratory assays, and the results of molecular genetic analyses. Thus, we present a detailed morphological comparison of grape phylloxera morphs and provide clarification of these by suggesting a simplified nomenclature as well as revising errors found in the published literature. Moreover, recent molecular markers studies, which further enhance our understanding of the impact of sexual recombination on grape phylloxera, are described and discussed.  相似文献

If excited by stimuli adjacent in space and time, the optical system frequently perceives illusions in the form of apparent movements. These effects may be attributed to the dynamic properties of the retinal nerve nets. On the basis of a specific psychophysical experiment the mechanism underlying the generation of optical illusions is interpreted by the methods of systems theory and its use in systems analysis is discussed. It is shown that for the perception of apparent movements the transit times of the signals in the dendrites are particularly important.  相似文献

Summary The embryo ofOncopeltus fasciatus forms a typical secondary dorsal organ (SDO). It develops after katatrepsis from the contracting serosa, the cells of which decrease in diameter but increase considerably in height. After 66 h, the SDO represents a protrusion of the serosal epithelium above the head and is then reduced to a disc-shaped formation, which sinks into the yolk, where it disintegrates after 80 h.During its typical expression, between 66 and 78 h, the SDO shows a zonal arrangement of its cell organelles. The nucleus, which is located in the basal cell region, has a very irregular outline and includes several nucleoli and globular inclusion bodies. Rough and smooth ER are well developed around the nucleus and suggest the involvement of the organ in protein secretion as well as in lipid metabolism. Electron-lucent vacuoles and electron-dense granules, sometimes enclosed in the vacuoles, accumulate in the apical cell region, and are obviously extruded into the peripheral (extraembryonic) space. The formation of intercellular clefts and delicate cytoplasmic extensions facing the yolk and microvilli facing the periphery evidence a transporting function of the epithelium. Blisters intercalated in extended junctional complexes between apical cell regions point to the transport of solutes.Because of the similarities of the processes observed in the SDO and in Malpighian tubules of larvae, an excretory function of the SDO is suggested. Final products of yolk and embryo are apparently transported to the extraembryonic space, where they accumulate during embryogenesis.Phylogeny, relationship, and function of the different embryonic glands in Arthropoda (primary and secondary DO and pleuropodia) are discussed.Dedicated to Prof. Dr. B. The great tit (Parus major) has been considered to be the most typical example of an avian ring species. The terminal taxa of the ring (major and minor sectors) are supposed to be reproductively isolated in a zone of secondary contact in the middle Amur valley, Siberia. Our study combines molecular markers (cytochrome‐b), bioacoustic analyses and morphological characters to judge the ring species status of the great tit complex. Despite a notable percentage of intermediately coloured birds in the mixed population of middle Amur, a lack of mitochondrial introgression between the major and minor sectors and a small number of true hybrids among voucher specimens from this area suggest at least a partial reproductive barrier between both sectors. In contrast, variation of morphological and especially acoustic characters along the ring‐shaped area and the phylogenetic structure of the P. major group do not match the ring species concept. Bioacoustic and molecular data (cytochrome‐b sequences) reveal two large and closely related subspecies blocks, the sectors major and bokharensis in the Western Palaearctic and central Asia, and the sectors minor and cinereus in the Eastern Palaearctic and South‐east Asia, respectively. The two western sectors diverged only recently (0.5 Mya) and they were separated from the eastern group by Pleistocene events about 1.5 Mya. Songs from allopatric regions of the two subspecies blocks differ distinctly in frequency parameters and element composition. In the area of secondary contact, males of all phenotypes share the same frequency range of song, close to the range of the typical minor song. Hybrids and major males sing mixed repertoires of typical major and minor strophe types as well as mixed strophes. In contrast, phenotypic minor males display only pure minor strophes. Differences in mate choice and mating success based on repertoire size are believed to uphold the reproductive barrier between major and minor birds in the area of sympatry. Taxonomic consequences suggest three separate species in the Parus major complex: Parus major s.s. The following features of the Permo-Carbonif erous xenacanthid sharkOrthacanthus sen- ckenhergianus are described for the first time:
  • —The blood and nerve supply system of the tooth root is comprised of two parallel, labio-lingually arranged main channels connected with a mesio-distally directed cavity below the crown. The nutrition of the median cuspule is separated from this vascular system.
  • —The dentition can be divided into symphyseal teeth, anterior teeth, lateral teeth, and posterior teeth. They vary in height and inclination of the cusps. No difference in dentition between upper and lower jaw can be shown.

    Immature leaf tissue of Triticum timopheevi Zukh. responded to supplied auxin and showed cell division in culture. The rates of uptake and of metabolism of indole-3-acetic acid and 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid by such tissues were measured and compared with those of mature auxin-unresponsive tissue. The purpose of these experiments was to determine whether or not the concentration of auxin in cultured mature tissue was a factor limiting the cell division response to auxin. The data indicate that neither alterations in rates of uptake nor alterations in rates of metabolism could explain the loss of responsiveness to auxin which apparently occurs during cell differentiation. The results are discussed in the context of the view that changes in cell sensitivity to growth substances and not only the concentration of these compounds, play an important role in plant growth and development.  相似文献
