Indiana bats (Myotis sodalis), federally listed as endangered, are of management concern in eastern North America. While researchers quantified the habitat affinities of the species throughout the range, few studies have occurred in regions where populations are at high risk for wind energy development and changing climes. Central Illinois, USA, is a dynamic landscape where forest area has been increasing in recent decades (on public and private land) because of changing farming practices and increased habitat protections. The increasing availability of large diameter trees, increasing forest biomass, and changing forest compositions have the potential to influence Indiana bat roost habitat preferences. We assessed Indiana bat maternity roost selection at the tree and forest plot scale to characterize patterns of use in this region from 2017–2018. We predicted that large trees on the landscape would support large colonies of Indiana bats. We located bats in multiple species of trees including elm (Ulmus spp.), cottonwood (Populus deltoides), and shagbark hickory (Carya ovata). We documented larger maternity colonies sharing roosts than in previous studies from the 1980s in the same region. We suggest managers and regulatory agencies monitor Indiana bats in dynamic landscapes such as those with changing forest composition and biomass.  相似文献

Allelopathy is often treated as an innate characteristic of a species rather than a phenotypically plastic trait that can vary with environmental conditions. Lianas are a highly competitive, phenotypically plastic life form that typically occur in both shaded and unshaded environments. As such, we hypothesized that temperate lianas may conditionally change allocation to allelopathic chemicals in response to light availability though the expected direction of change is unclear. Shading may reduce resource availability and therefore reduce allocation to allelochemicals, induce allelopathy as a competitive mechanism, or may not be related to allelopathy. To test the conditionality of allelopathy, sun and shade leaves of five common liana species (Toxicodendron radicans, Parthenocissus quinquefolia, Celastrus orbiculatus, Lonicera japonica, and Vitis vulpina) were collected from a young deciduous forest in New Jersey, USA, and tested with laboratory bioassays to detect allelopathic potential. All liana species showed allelopathic potential, and three species exhibited induction of increased allelopathic potential in shaded environments. The two species that were not shade induced are late successional lianas that persist for long periods in forest canopies. In contrast, the inducible lianas were early successional species that typically decline with canopy closure. This research indicates that lianas have the potential to be allelopathic and allelopathic potential conditionally responds to shading only for species that would normally be excluded from the forest canopy. As early successional lianas are present throughout forest regeneration in a range of light environments, allelopathic plasticity may increase their success by differentially allocating resources based on environmental conditions.  相似文献

Long term studies of invasion dynamics are critical in developing a more complete understanding of the factors that influence species spread. To address this issue, the dynamics of the non-native invasive plant, Rosa multiflora, were examined using a 40-year record of successional change. The roles of biotic and abiotic factors in regulating R. multiflora invasion were also assessed. The invasion showed an initial 9-year time lag, followed by a 20-year period of population expansion and an ultimate decline as succession progressed. During all phases of R. multiflora’s invasion, there was continuous turnover within plots. Rainfall during the previous season was found to increase R. multiflora colonization during population expansion while tree species inhibited the invader’s growth. During expansion and decline of R. multiflora, common associated species were often positively or negatively correlated with changes in R. multiflora cover. Though early population dynamics were regulated by propagule pressure, the major influence on R. multiflora late in succession was canopy closure. Although the invasion of this species was largely self-limiting in this system, the species is likely to persist within late successional systems and may require management intervention.  相似文献

A large number of soybean (Glycine max L. Merr.)flowers and young pods abscise rather than develop into mature pods. Flower andpod drop or abortion accounts for the majority of total reproductive abscissionand influences potential soybean yield. The objectives of this study were todetermine the patterns of flower, pod and seed development under treatmentswiththe growth regulators, 2-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy) propanoic acid (2,4-DP) and6-benzylaminopurine (BAP), applied at the early reproductive stages, and toexamine the association of reproductive abscission with growth characteristicsand agronomic traits, including seed yield and seed weight. Small seeded [cvPungsan (11.1±0.4 g100-seed–1)] and large seeded [cv Manlee(21.0±0.5 g 100-seed–1)]genotypes were separately planted in the greenhouse and field, and treated witheither 2,4-DP or BAP. 2,4-DP (a synthetic auxin) and BAP (a syntheticcytokinin)were each applied at three concentrations (i.e. high, intermediate or low):0.12mM, 0.08 mM, 0.04 mM, and 1.5mM, 1 mM, 0.5 mM respectively. High andlow concentrations were employed for greenhouse experiments to examine thenumber of flowers per plant in pots. With the exception of low BAP (0.5mM) treatment in Pungsan, all treatments increased total podnumberwith various numbers of seeds per pod. Low 2,4-DP (0.04 mM) inbothgenotypes or BAP (0.5 mM) in Manlee significantly reduced flowerabortion and delayed abscission of pods in both genotypes, resulting inincreased pod setting rates. Under field conditions using intermediateconcentrations, 1 mM BAP significantly increased 100-seed weightto22.3 g at R1 in Manlee and 11.9 g at R3 in Pungsan.BAP (1 mM) at R3 in Pungsan significantly improved seed yield(40.1g plant–1). Maturity was not significantlyaffected by either application in Manlee, but was significantly affected by BAPin Pungsan. In Pungsan, 2,4-DP increased pod number, plant height and nodenumber, but decreased 100-seed weight in Pungsan treated at R1, causing nosignificant change of seed yield. This study suggested that exogenousregulatorssignificantly influenced reproductive and growth characteristics, andconsequently seed yield, but increase of pod number was not always beneficialfor seed yield.  相似文献

The lipopolysaccharides (LPSs) from Rhizobium trifolii ANU843 and several transposon (Tn5) symbiotic mutants derived from ANU843 were isolated and partially characterized. The mutant strains are unable to induce normal root hair curling (Hac- phenotype) or nodulation (Nod-phenotype) in clover plants. The LPSs from the parent and mutants are very similar in composition. Analysis by PAGE shows that the LPSs consist of higher and lower molecular weight forms. The higher molecular weight form of the LPSs exists in several aggregation states when PAGE is done in 0.1% SDS but collapses into a single band when PAGE is done in 0.5% SDS. Mild acid hydrolysis of all the LPSs releases two polysaccharides, PS1 and PS2. Immunoblots of the PAGE gels and enzyme linked immunosorbant assay inhibition assays show that the PS1 fractions contain the immunodominant sites of the LPSs and that these sites are present in the higher molecular weight form of the LPSs. All the PS1 fractions contain methylated sugars, 2-amino-2,6-dideoxyhexose, heptose, glucuronic acid, and 2-keto-3-deoxyoctonic acid (KDO). All the PS2 fractions contain galacturonic acid, mannose, galactose, and KDO. The PS2 fractions have a molecular weight of about 700. The KDO is present at the reducing end of both the PS1 and the PS2 fractions. The PS1 and PS2 fractions from the mutants contain more glucose than these fractions from the parent. The LPS from a deletion mutant contains less acyl groups than the other LPSs. Immunoblots of the LPSs show that the parent and nod A mutant LPSs contain an additional antigenic band which is not observed in the other LPSs.  相似文献

Demography, spatial pattern, and diversity of canopy and subcanopy trees, shrubs, and lianas were compared in two cool and two warm temperate North American forests, paired at 30° and 40° north latitudes. All woody stems 1 cm dbh in 16 randomly located, non-contiguous plots totalling 1 ha at each of the four sites were measured, mapped, and identified. Basal area and overall density did not differ between latitudes. Demographic and spatial analyses revealed remarkable similarity in spatial dispersion, irrespective of density or species composition. At all sites, dispersion of canopy trees was random but all understory stems were uniformly distributed relative to all canopy trees. Species diversity and vertical structure differed between the warm and cool temperate sites, especially in species composition of individual strata. Associations of understory species relative to canopy species were more random at 30° than at 40° north, where a higher degree of association between canopy and understory species' patterns, coupled with their size class distributions, suggested more lengthy regeneration cycles and an alternation of species assemblages. The forests at 30°, those subject to periodic canopy disturbance by hurricanes, had more vertical mixing of species (i.e., canopy species represented in all size classes), more tree saplings, and significantly more shrub and liana species.  相似文献

The frequency of cyanogenesis of 48 species of vascular plants was examined by testing 30 individuals from five populations of each species for release of cyanide. The rate at which cyanide was released and the amount of cyanide released varied widely among individuals of a population and among populations of a species. For many taxa, the frequency of cyanogenesis was highly variable among populations. Of the species examined, 20 have not been reported previously as being cyanogenic.  相似文献

Summary A study was conducted to maximize plant regeneration frequencies from cultured anthers of Chandler, Honeoye, and Redchief strawberries (Fragaria x ananassa Duch.). A comparison of auxins (IAA, NAA), cytokinins (BA, BPA, KIN) and carbohydrates (sucrose, glucose, maltose) in MS medium showed that the highest shoot regeneration across cultivars (8%) occurred when using a medium containing 2 mg/l IAA, 1 mg/l BA, and 0.2 M glucose. A comparison of MS, NN, and H1 inorganic medium (a new formulation based on the anther culture literature) solidified with either agar or gellan gum and containing IAA, BA, and glucose, showed the highest shoot regeneration across cultivars (19%) when using H1 and gellan gum. Lastly, media containing Fe-EDTA yielded more shoots than media containing Fe-Metalosate, and anthers cultured on Fe-EDTA media in darkness for 30d followed by 30d in white light produced more shoots (16% average regeneration) than those cultured on Fe-EDTA media under white or yellow light (16h photoperiod) for the initial 30d (0.3% and 5% respectively). Plants were acclimated ex vitro where they flowered and set fruit.
