1. Swarming males of Melolontha hippocastani are known to locate females that stay feeding within the host trees by orienting towards damage‐induced plant volatiles (green leaf volatiles) and a sex pheromone. Thus, volatiles emitted by freshly damaged leaves might indicate to a male the presence of currently feeding females. 2. The hypothesis was studied that volatiles from freshly damaged leaves are more attractive to males than volatiles from old damaged leaves. The odour bouquets of damaged leaves from three plant species that have been shown to attract male M. hippocastani in the field were analysed 10 min (fresh damage) and 1.5 h (old damage) after damaging, using coupled gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. The results showed clear differences between the bouquets: the bouquet of freshly damaged leaves of all species consisted of typical leaf aldehydes, i.e. hexanal, (Z)‐3‐hexenal, (Z)‐2‐hexenal, (E)‐2‐hexenal, the leaf alcohol (Z)‐3‐hexen‐1‐ol, and the corresponding acetate. One and a half hours after damage, aldehydes had almost vanished and (Z)‐3‐hexen‐1‐ol and (Z)‐3‐hexenyl acetate predominated; however males of M. hippocastani were equally attracted to traps baited with volatiles from old and freshly damaged leaves in field experiments. When traps were baited with synthetic volatile mixtures mimicking the bouquets of old and freshly damaged leaves, M. hippocastani males even preferred the old damage mixture. 3. Experiments addressing the role of individual green leaf volatiles revealed that only (Z)‐3‐hexen‐1‐ol was highly attractive while the other compounds tested individually were behaviourally inactive, however all tested compounds elicited comparable electrophysiological responses on male M. hippocastani antennae. 4. In analogy to the term aggregation kairomone used for feeding‐induced plant volatiles that attract both sexes of an insect, the term sexual kairomone is suggested to describe the novel function of (Z)‐3‐hexen‐1‐ol in the sexual communication of M. hippocastani.  相似文献

Sulfur-oxidizing epsilonproteobacteria are common in a variety of sulfidogenic environments. These autotrophic and mixotrophic sulfur-oxidizing bacteria are believed to contribute substantially to the oxidative portion of the global sulfur cycle. In order to better understand the ecology and roles of sulfur-oxidizing epsilonproteobacteria, in particular those of the widespread genus Sulfurimonas, in biogeochemical cycles, the genome of Sulfurimonas denitrificans DSM1251 was sequenced. This genome has many features, including a larger size (2.2 Mbp), that suggest a greater degree of metabolic versatility or responsiveness to the environment than seen for most of the other sequenced epsilonproteobacteria. A branched electron transport chain is apparent, with genes encoding complexes for the oxidation of hydrogen, reduced sulfur compounds, and formate and the reduction of nitrate and oxygen. Genes are present for a complete, autotrophic reductive citric acid cycle. Many genes are present that could facilitate growth in the spatially and temporally heterogeneous sediment habitat from where Sulfurimonas denitrificans was originally isolated. Many resistance-nodulation-development family transporter genes (10 total) are present; of these, several are predicted to encode heavy metal efflux transporters. An elaborate arsenal of sensory and regulatory protein-encoding genes is in place, as are genes necessary to prevent and respond to oxidative stress.  相似文献

Although there are many indications that N cycling in grassland ecosystems changes under elevated atmospheric CO2 partial pressure (pCO2), most information has been obtained in short‐term studies. Thus, N budgets were established for four years under ambient and 60 Pa pCO2 at two levels of N fertilization in two contrasting model ecosystems: Trifolium repens L. (white clover) and Lolium perenne L. (perennial ryegrass) were planted in soil in boxes in the Swiss FACE experiment. While T. repens showed an 80% increase in harvested biomass with no change in biomass allocation under elevated atmospheric pCO2 compared to ambient conditions, L. perenne showed an increase only in the biomass of the roots. During the four years of the experiment, the systems gained N both from N retained in the soil and from stubble/stolon and roots left after the final harvest; in total between 11 and 86 gN m−2. Nitrogen retention in the soil was between 4 and 64 g m2. The L. perenne system gained the most N and retained the most N in the soil at high N fertilization and elevated atmospheric pCO2. The input of new C and N into the soil correlated well in the L. perenne systems but not in the T. repens systems. Elevated atmospheric pCO2 led neither to an increase in N retention in the soil nor did it reduce the loss of N from the soil. In the L. perenne systems, N fertilization played the main role in both the retention of N and the sequestration of C, while in the T. repens systems symbiotic N2 fixation may have controlled N retention in the soil.  相似文献

In East Africa, traditional pastoralists increase landscape heterogeneity by creating traditional livestock corrals (bomas). When these bomas are abandoned, they serve as long‐term hot spots of increased nutrients and unique vegetation. However, the effect of bomas on insect populations is unclear. Grasshopper (Suborder Caelifera) assemblages are thought to reflect vegetation, and within Caelifera, the subfamily Oedipodinae is known to be associated with degraded areas. We sampled vegetation and collected grasshoppers inside of abandoned bomas, 50 m from abandoned bomas and 250 m from abandoned bomas. Bomas had significantly lower grass abundance than background vegetation. Total grasshopper abundance was positively correlated with grass and forb abundance, while the proportion of grasshoppers in the subfamily Oedipodinae was negatively correlated with grass abundance. Grasshopper abundance was significantly lower inside of bomas than outside of them, but the proportion of grasshoppers in the subfamily Oedipodinae was significantly higher inside of bomas than outside of them. This suggests that the decreased vegetation in abandoned bomas supports fewer grasshoppers, but a higher fraction of the grasshopper assemblage in abandoned bomas is composed of Oedipodinae. Thus, traditional pastoralists can have long‐term effects on the size and composition of grasshopper assemblages through the use of bomas.  相似文献

Abstract— Myelin/oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG) is a quantitatively minor component of CMS myelin. In this study, human MOG was found to express the L2/HNK-1 epitope on N-linked oligosaccharide structures. This carbohydrate epitope has been found previously in three other characterized human myelin glycoproteins: the my-elin-associated glycoprotein, P0, and the oligodendrocyte-myelin glycoprotein. It seems, therefore, that the L2/HNK-1 epitope is expressed frequently in human myelin glycoproteins. Serial lectin affinity chromatography of 14C-glycopeptides indicated that MOG N -oligosaccharide structures are mainly of the complex type, accounting for 77.8% of total radioactivity. In contrast with myelin-asso-ciated glycoprotein and P0, which express the L2/HNK-1 epitope on fucosylated structures, in MOG the epitope was detected on all glycopeptide fractions obtained by serial lectin affinity chromatography, although a preferential expression of the L2/HNK-1 epitope was observed on fucosylated structures. Finally, the data indicated that, as for other human myelin glycoproteins, only a subpopulation of MOG molecules expresses the L2/HNK-1 epitope.  相似文献

A new technique is reported for the physical mapping of low copy DNA sequences on plant chromosomes. Individual chromosomes were microisolated and their DNA used as the target for the polymerase chain reaction in order to identify the chromosome carrying a specific gene sequence. The use of defined translocation chromosomes further refined the resolution of the method to a subchromosomal level. To demonstrate the applicability of the procedure genes have been localized coding for vicilin seed storage proteins on the field bean Vicia faba L. in a region which includes the centromere and the proximal parts of the short and the long arms of chromosome II.  相似文献

The N-linked oligosaccharide structures of human myelin-associated glycoprotein (MAG) and P0 have been characterized by serial lectin affinity chromatography (SLAC) of 14C-glycopeptides. 14C-Glycopeptides were prepared from purified MAG derivative and P0 by extensive proteolytic digestion and N-14C-acetylation. Assuming that all the 14C-glycopeptides were radiolabelled to the same specific radioactivity, the relative occurrence of the oligosaccharide structures was correlated to the amount of incorporated radioactivity. Sixteen and 15 fractions were generated by SLAC of MAG and P0 14C-glycopeptides, respectively. Despite this tremendous structural heterogeneity, the oligosaccharide "fingerprints" of MAG and P0 obtained by SLAC displayed similarities: (a) of the three types of N-linked oligosaccharides, the complex type accounted for 80.4% and 94.9% of MAG and P0 radioactivity, respectively; (b) biantennary complex oligosaccharides were the major structures present on MAG and P0; (c) approximately 60% of MAG and P0 oligosaccharides possessed a bisecting N-acetylglucosamine residue; and (d) large amounts of oligosaccharides with an alpha(1-6)fucose residue were found in both MAG and P0 and, noticeably, approximately 25% of the tri- and/or tetraantennary and approximately 90% of the bisected biantennary oligosaccharides of both glycoproteins contained alpha(1-6)fucose residues in the core. This study demonstrates that MAG and P0, both belonging to the immunoglobulin superfamily, display structural similarities in their N-linked oligosaccharide contents.  相似文献
