Through the process of domestication, bean varieties have beenselected from their wild ancestors for various anthropocentrically-importantcharacteristics. In order to compare some agronomic and morphologicaltraits of a wild population and a modern variety (cv. Bayo Mecentral),the following variables were evaluated: growth habit; numberof nodes on the main stem; number of branches and pods per plant;flower and pod colours; stem length; days to initiation of flowering;days to physiological maturity and duration of flowering. Variationin each trait was recorded, particularly in the wild population.The growth habits of the wild population were very diverse andthere were positive and significant correlations between 13pairs of variables, including the number of nodes on the mainstem, pods per plant, days to flowering and duration of flowering,whereas domesticated beans gave only a few significant correlations.The analysis of principal components indicated that the linearcombination of agronomic and morphological variables, involvingthe first three principal components, accounted for 70% of thetotal variability of the data, and the populations were clearlyseparated as two biological entities by the first principalcomponent. The reproductive biology of most species of Rafflesiaceae is unknown. We studied several aspects of that of Bdallophyton bambusarum Liebm. (Rafflesiaceae) in a subdeciduous tropical forest. Flowering of B. bambusarum is during the driest time of the year. Male flowers are more numerous, larger, and with more nectar than female flowers, but the nectar from female flowers has a higher sugar concentration. Flies ( Peckia spp., Perckiamya spp.; Diptera: Sarcophagidae) are the pollinators. They make frequent visits, spending more time in the male flowers. Fluorescent dyes applied to track movement indicated extensive pollen flow within populations, and pollen flow could also be occurring between populations. The latter is reflected in the higher genetic variability within, and the great similarity between, populations than previously recorded for the species. Secondary characteristics of dioecious species fit B. bambusarum , but not the trade-off of reproductive resource allocation. Parasitic plants may damage the host, but the mechanism and extent are still unknown.  相似文献

Organic matter and nitrogen cycles in two mediterranean woodyshrubs (Adenocarpus decorticans Boiss. andCistus laurifoliusL.) and two pine species were investigated during 1987–1989in a small, recently pine-afforested catchment in Sierra delos Filabres (Almería Province, south-eastern Spain).Pine cover was sparse because canopy closure was not yet completed,allowing strong shrub colonization in the clearings. The aimof this study was to compare the contribution of different annualfluxes and the distribution of organic matter and nitrogen inboth shrub and pine components for the entire catchment. Specialemphasis was placed on the N use strategy shown by the two shrubspecies, a symbiotic N2fixing species (A. decorticans) and anon-fixing species (C. laurifolius). Our results showed that the characteristics of C and N cyclingin the Nacimiento catchment are mainly determined by the earlystage of pine layer development and the significant contributionof the two shrub species differing with respect to C acquisitionand N use. The pine layer was characterized by a low standing biomass,substantial percentages of needle biomass and high (net production/biomass)and (needle production/total net production) ratios. N uptakewas mainly diverted to biomass increment, as shown by the substantialallocation found in this study. Overall, these results are consistentwith the patterns described for even-aged stands during theearly-growth phase. Retranslocation supplied 21% of the annualN requirements for pine above-ground biomass production. C. laurifolius showed low litter-fall return, strong retranslocation,efficient utilization of N in bulk deposition and slow decomposition,suggesting a closer, self-regulated organic matter and N-conservingbehaviour thanA. decorticans . On the contrary,A. decorticansshowed high leaf turnover, strong litter-fall return, low retranslocationand fast mineralization of organic matter and nitrogen, indicatingthat internal organic matter and N cycling is less efficient,and thus, that this species is more dependent on the soil tomeet its N requirements. If resource availability shapes population distribution, changes in resource abundance should cause parallel changes in population numbers. However, tracking ability may be disrupted by different environmental and behavioural factors that act at different spatial and temporal scales. Here we analyse the ability of wintering Blackcap Sylvia atricapilla populations to track spatio-temporal variation in fruit availability in southern Spain in two habitats (forests and shrublands) with different population structure. Former studies had shown that forests are equally used by both adult migrant and local Blackcaps, whereas shrublands are nearly monopolized by juvenile migrants. These differences might affect resource tracking: it should be disrupted in forests, as local birds remain over winter in their breeding territories, but not in shrublands where similarly competitive juvenile migrants can freely track the spatial distribution of fruits. We analysed the fruit-tracking ability of Blackcap populations among sites and years in both habitat types using a habitat-matching model, which predicts spatio-temporal changes in population abundance proportional to changes in resource availability. We counted Blackcaps and fruiting shrubs (dominated by Lentiscs Pistacia lentiscus and Wild Olives Olea europaea sylvestris ) during four winters in forest and shrubland patches. The abundance of fruits was always higher in shrublands than in forests. In shrublands, Blackcaps seemed to move freely across fruit-rich habitat patches, tracking changes in fruiting-shrub abundance among sites and years. However, such tracking was not observed in forests. This supports the view that fruit-tracking ability may be constrained by local factors, such as the social structure of populations occurring in different habitat types, which introduces spatio-temporal variation in the way fruit availability shapes the abundance distribution of these birds in their Mediterranean wintering grounds.  相似文献

Fidelity to previous wintering areas (i.e. site fidelity) has important ecological and evolutionary implications. However, since the percentage of recaptures of ringed birds at the same wintering area in subsequent years does not allow the estimation of the proportion of birds alive that exhibit site fidelity, previous studies on different passerine species have failed to show the true extent of this site fidelity. Here we use a recent approach, based on the comparison of survival rate estimates from capture-recapture data at single field stations with recovery data from a much larger area. The idea is to determine the proportion of birds still alive that return to the area. The study was carried out on the Blackcap Sylvia atricapilla , comparing the capture-recapture data of two field stations (Pilas [SW] and Tiana [NE]) situated 1000 km apart in Spain with the complete winter recovery data of the Spanish Ringing Office. Totals of 1936 and 3976 Blackcaps were ringed at Pilas (1981–1986) and Tiana (1975–1986), respectively, and the numbers of recaptures in subsequent winters were 94 and 34. The pooled annual survival rate estimation based on the two sites is 0.40 (s.e. = 0.05). The annual survival rate estimated from the Spanish ringing recovery data was 0.48 (s.e. = 0.08), which is not significantly different. We can conclude, therefore, that migrant Blackcaps in Spain, if alive, tend to return year after year to the previous wintering site.  相似文献

A method for the first step in the selection of trained sensory assessors, based on their skill in identifying basic tastes in low concentration solutions, was defined and evaluated. The solutions used were: 0.4 and 0.8% sucrose; 0.03, 0.04 and 0.06% citric acid; 0.08 and 0.15% sodium chloride; 0.02 and 0.03% caffeine. Concentration ranges were found adequate. The criterion for selection was to have over 65% correct answers. Out of 226 candidates who received the test, 141 (62%) were selected. The probability of a candidate having more than a certain percentage of correct answers was calculated. The influence of the dilution water quality on the perception of basic tastes was significant; distilled water was the most adequate.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. Blastocrithidia triatomae n. sp. found in the digestive tract of T. infestans in Argentina is described. Cysts attached to the flagellum, a conspicuous characteristic of the new species, are described and shown in photomicrographs. Since T. infestans may harbor both T. cruzi and B. triatomae, or either one independently, it is essential that they be distinguished in xenodiagnosis.  相似文献
