Life seems to be at the border between order and chaos. The Game of Life, which is a cellular automation to mimic life, also lies at the transition between ordered and chaotic structures. Kauffman recently that the organizations at the edge of chaos may be the characteristic target of selection for systems able to coordinate complex tasks and adapt. In this paper, we present the idea of perpetual disequilibration proposed by Gunji and others as a general principle governing self-organization of complex systems towards the critical state lying at the border of order and chaos. The rule for the Game of Life has the minimum degree of perpetual disequilibrium among 2(18) rules of the class to which it belongs. 相似文献

Gender differences in the effect of 20 days bed rest (BR) on muscle strength were evaluated in voluntary 11 male and 7 female students. Maximum Isometric Voluntary Contractions (MVC) of 4 right arm muscles (RAM), 5 right leg muscles (RLM), and 2 body trunk muscles were measured with an isometric dynamometer, respectively. Muscle masses (MM) of right arm and leg and body trunk were determined by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry, respectively. The maximum cross sectional area (CSAmax) of right m. quadriceps femoris was measured by magnetic resonance imaging. Elbow flexion MVC in males and all MVC of RLM except knee flexion in both males and females were decreased (p<0.05), but elbow extension MVC in females was increased (p<0.05), while all of other MVC only tended to decrease. However, the decrements in leg MVC were not correlated to the leg MM, and also the decrement in knee extension was not correlated to the CSAmax of m. quadriceps. The reduction of MVC of antigravity muscles might be caused not only by a decrease in MM but also by other factors. The greater decrements of leg MVC during BR were the higher initial level in males, but the inverse was observed in females. However, this discrepancy between males and females cannot be explained in the present study. 相似文献

Investigating the effect of 20 days bed rest (BR) on kinesthesia and two-point discrimination, 10 young volunteers participated in this study as subjects. Angle position sensation of right knee was measured in the prone position during flexion and extension monitored by a goniometer after two-point discrimination in skin was determined on the same lower leg. Flexed constant error was unchanged but directional constant error and absolute error were increased after BR (p<0.05). Two-point discrimination was unchanged after BR, which brought about a decline of the orientation of moving the joint indicated as over shooting of the angle during knee flexion, while it did not affect superficial sensation observed by two-point discrimination. Probably, an adjustment of deep sensation to the knee joint is lowered by the reduction in kinesthesia as well as the sensory disturbance during BR, which is independent on information from superficial sensation. 相似文献

The fate and interactions with river organisms of zooplankton as they drift downriver from a reservoir on a fourth-order mountain
stream (Hiji River, Japan) were investigated. Monthly samples were collected at the reservoir and six river sites, simultaneously,
from May 2005 to May 2006. Aquatic macroinvertebrates and fish were colleted, and their stomach contents were analyzed in
April and May, 2006, respectively. Drift from the reservoir was the primary source for the river plankton community; the abundance
of zooplankton, particularly those of cladocerans and large rotifer, rapidly decreased within several kilometers of the dam.
Analysis of the contents of fish stomachs showed that drifting zooplankton was the main food for fish, with strong food selectivity
for cladocerans and large rotifers. However, fish and insect planktivores showed longitudinally different stomach contents,
with progressively fewer zooplankton found in the stomachs at the downriver sites. The results suggest that the outflow of
zooplankton from the reservoir is an important food source for the downstream predators, especially fish, but the drift of
zooplankton and consequent food availability for the predators at lower sites are strongly limited by concentrated fish predation

In plants, the effective mobilization of seed nutrient reserves is crucial during germination and for seedling establishment. The Arabidopsis H+-PPase-loss-of-function fugu5 mutants exhibit a reduced number of cells in the cotyledons. This leads to enhanced post-mitotic cell expansion, also known as compensated cell enlargement (CCE). While decreased cell numbers have been ascribed to reduced gluconeogenesis from triacylglycerol, the molecular mechanisms underlying CCE remain ill-known. Given the role of indole 3-butyric acid (IBA) in cotyledon development, and because CCE in fugu5 is specifically and completely cancelled by ech2, which shows defective IBA-to-indoleacetic acid (IAA) conversion, IBA has emerged as a potential regulator of CCE. Here, to further illuminate the regulatory role of IBA in CCE, we used a series of high-order mutants that harbored a specific defect in IBA-to-IAA conversion, IBA efflux, IAA signaling, or vacuolar type H+-ATPase (V-ATPase) activity and analyzed the genetic interaction with fugu5–1. We found that while CCE in fugu5 was promoted by IBA, defects in IBA-to-IAA conversion, IAA response, or the V-ATPase activity alone cancelled CCE. Consistently, endogenous IAA in fugu5 reached a level 2.2-fold higher than the WT in 1-week-old seedlings. Finally, the above findings were validated in icl–2, mls–2, pck1–2 and ibr10 mutants, in which CCE was triggered by low sugar contents. This provides a scenario in which following seed germination, the low-sugar-state triggers IAA synthesis, leading to CCE through the activation of the V-ATPase. These findings illustrate how fine-tuning cell and organ size regulation depend on interplays between metabolism and IAA levels in plants. 相似文献

A living system reveals local computing by referring to a whole system beyond the exploration-exploitation dilemma. The slime mold, Physarum polycephalum, uses protoplasmic flow to change its own outer shape, which yields the boundary condition and forms an adaptive and robust network. This observation suggests that the whole Physarum can be represented as a local protoplasmic flow system. Here, we show that a system composed of particles, which move and are modified based upon the particle transformation that contains the relationship between the parts and the whole, can emulate the network formed by Physarum. This system balances the exploration-exploitation trade-off and shows a scale-free sub-domain. By decreasing the number of particles, our model, VP-S, can emulate the Physarum adaptive network as it is attracted to a food stimulus. By increasing the number of particles, our model, VP-D, can emulate the pattern of a growing Physarum. The patterns produced by our model were compared with those of the Physarum pattern quantitatively, which showed that both patterns balance exploration with exploitation. This model should have a wide applicability to study biological collective phenomena in general. 相似文献

Background: Helicobacter pylori infection has been shown to contribute to atherosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases. Insulin resistance is the pathophysiologic background of the clinical features of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases. We examined the association between H. pylori infection and insulin resistance in a large Japanese population. Materials and Methods: Fifteen hundred ninety‐eight consecutive asymptomatic subjects that underwent a complete medical survey in our institute between May 2007 and July 2008 were recruited. Cases under medication for hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes mellitus, hyperuricemia, or cardiovascular diseases were excluded from the study. Cases suffering from chronic renal or liver failure were also excluded. The homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA‐IR) score was used to quantitatively estimate insulin resistance. Visceral and subcutaneous adipose tissues (SAT) were measured by computed tomography. The association between H. pylori serostatus and HOMA‐IR score was investigated by multivariate regression analysis. Results: A total of 988 men and 119 women were eventually eligible for this cross‐sectional survey. Helicobacter pylori seropositivity was significantly higher in 99 cases with insulin resistance (HOMA‐IR ≥2.5) compared with 1008 cases without insulin resistance (HOMA‐IR <2.5) (39.4 vs 28.7%, p = .027). There was a significant association between H. pylori serostatus and HOMA‐IR score by multiple linear regression analysis (coefficients = 0.152, 95% CI = 0.058–0.246, p = .001), after adjusting for sex, age, body mass index, waist girth, visceral and subcutaneous adipose tissues, smoking status, alcohol consumption, dietary habits, and physical activity. Conclusions: Helicobacter pylori infection significantly and independently contributed to promoting insulin resistance in a large asymptomatic population. 相似文献

Due to prolonged bed rest (BR), maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) might be decreased by above -8%, even if a moderate supine bicycle exercise (SBE) was performed for 45 to 60 minutes every day during BR. However, the decrement of VO2max was lowered to below -5% by isometric training and using a reverse gradient garment. Further it was rather slightly increased by SBE training with gradually increasing load from 40% to 90% VO2max. The facts suggest the dependency of the decrease of VO2max during BR on exercising muscle mass (MM) and strength. In the present study, therefore, the effects of isokinetic knee extension (Ik-KnE) training on VO2max, exercising MM and muscle contraction strength during BR were investigated. We investigated the changes of the psychological state during 20 days bed rest (BR) in 10 young participants,(5 males and 5 females, age; 19-24 yrs). Psychological assessment was accomplished by the following authorized 3 indices: 1) Zung's Self-rating Depression Scale, 2) Cornell Medical Index, and 3) Goldberg's General Health Questionnaire. Zung's Self-rating Depression Scale is a indicator for depression, and the other two indices were used for detecting signs of neurosis. The results from Zung's Self-rating Depression Scale and the General Health Questionnaire in this study indicated a tendency toward depression and neurosis developing during BR, respectively. The scores in the Cornell Medical Index did not change. Urinary excretion of 17-hydroxycorticosteroid increased significantly, indicating that BR immobilization induced an important psychological stress. We were unable to determine which factors caused the changes in psychological state during BR, immobilization insert or personal problems. 相似文献
