Loss of mustache and beard in the adult male caused by severe burn, trauma, or tumor resection may cause cosmetic and psychological problems for these patients. Reconstruction of the elements of the face presents difficult and often daunting problems for plastic surgeons. The tissue that will be used for this purpose should have the same characteristics as the facial area, consisting of thin, pliable, hair-bearing tissue with a good color match. There is a very limited amount of donor area that has these characteristics. A hair-bearing submental island flap was used successfully for mustache and beard reconstruction in 11 male patients during the last 5 years. The scar was on the mentum in four cases, right cheek in two cases, right half of the upper lip in two cases, left cheek in one case, left half of the upper lip in one case, and both sides of the upper lip in one case. The submental island flap is supplied by the submental artery, a branch of the facial artery. The maximum flap size was 13 x 6 cm and the minimum size was 6 x 3 cm (average, 10 x 4 cm) in this series. Direct closure was achieved at all donor sites. Patients were followed up for 6 months to 5 years. No major complication was noted other than one case of temporary palsy of the marginal mandibular branch of the facial nerve. The mean postoperative stay was 7 days. Color and texture match were good. Hair growth on the flap was normal, and characteristics of the hair were the same as the intact side of the face in all patients. The submental island flap is safe, rapid, and simple to raise and leaves a well-hidden donor-site scar. The authors believe that the submental artery island flap surpasses the other flaps in reconstruction of the mustache and beard in male patients. We investigated the serum concentrations of zinc and copper during the inflammatory process together with the effect of treatment
with a nonsteroid anti-inflammatory agent on these trace elements concentrations. In the present study, we used 92 guinea
pigs, 12 of which constituted the control group; the remaining 80 were the experimental group. To start with, proquazone (as
anti-inflammatory agent) was administered orally to 40 guinea pigs of the experimental group at 20-mg/kg doses 2 h before
the surgery. Throughout the experimental period, the above dose was administered to the animals twice a day. We produced inflammation
in all animals of the experimental group by using carrageenan (inflammatory agent) dropped into mandibular surgical defects.
Serum concentrations of zinc and copper were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry in both groups at the 6th,
48th, 120th, 168th, and 240th h. The serum zinc concentrations of the carrageenan-administered group decreased significantly
(p<0.01). When comparing the serum zinc concentrations of the carrageenan plus proquazone-administered group with those of control
group, the decrease (p<0.05) at the 6th, 48th, and 120th h were statistically significant. When the copper serum concentrations of the carrageenan-administered
group were compared with those of the control group, at the 48th, 120th, and 168th h, a statistically significant increase
(p<0.01) was observed. However, there was no significant change in the carrageenan plus proquazone-administered group at the
168th and 240th h. As a result during the acute phase of inflammation, serum zinc concentrations decreased, whereas serum
copper concentrations increased. The alterations in zinc concentrations were more rapid than those in copper concentrations,
but the administration of proquazone slowed the rate of decrease in serum zinc concentrations.

The present study was undertaken to determine in vivo and in vitro effects of some plant growth regulators on rat erythrocyte carbonic anhydrase (CA) and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) activities. Both in vivo and in vitro, spermidine and kinetin did not affect enzymatic activities of CA and G6PD, whereas putrescine decreased these activities, and abscisic acid increased them. Lactulose and lactitol, non-absorbable disaccharides, prevent bacterial translocation (BT) arising from the gut. In contrast, lack of food into the gut leads to coliform bacterial overgrowth and even if it does not cause BT, can induce the risk from other stimuli for BT. In this study, we tested whether lactulose and lactitol affected populations of coliform bacteria in the caecum during starvation in Sprague-Dawley rats. Three groups of rats were starved for 72 h and given oral 2 ml undiluted lactulose (670 mg/ml), 2 ml undiluted lactitol (666 mg/ml) or 2 ml physiological saline, respectively, once a day. The caecum and mesenteric lymph nodes (MLNs) were removed for microbiological and histopathological analyses. The highest degree of coliform bacterial overgrowth, BT to MLNs and histopathological damage were observed in lactulose-treated rats, followed by the group treated with lactitol. As a result of this study, both drugs, especially lactulose augmented the proliferation and translocation tendency of coliform bacteria in the caecum during 72-h starvation in rats. 相似文献

Lipid peroxidation and scavenging enzyme levels in the liver of streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats

In this study, alterations in the liver antioxidant enzymes status and lipid peroxidation in short-term (8-weeks) and long-term (24-weeks) diabetic rats were examined. Glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were significantly increased, but superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity was significantly reduced in 8-weeks diabetic rats, compared to control. Catalase (CAT) activity, however, was found unchanged. In 24-weeks diabetic rats, while GSH-Px activity was unchanged, but SOD and CAT activities and MDA levels were significantly increased, compared to control. These results suggest that diabetes-induced alterations in tissue antioxidant system may reflect a generalized increase in tissue oxidative stress. It can be concluded that lipid peroxidation and antioxidant enzyme levels are elevated in diabetic condition. Hence, diabetes mellitus, if left untreated, may increase degenerative processes due to accumulation of oxidative free radicals. 相似文献

The thermally interconvertible diastereomers of the (5S)-methyl-3-(o-aryl)-2,4-oxazolidinediones were synthesized and their conformers studied by (1)H NMR and HPLC. The barriers to rotation about the N-C(aryl) bond were found to be very much solvent dependent. For the o-fluoro oxazolidinedione, difference in barriers to rotation in deuterated methanol and deuterated chloroform amounted to 34 kJ/mol. ortho-Bromo substitution increased the barrier to rotation up to 100 kJ/mol in ethanol, which enabled the analytical separation of the diastereomers and observation of the thermodynamic enrichment of the S-P conformer by HPLC. In CDCl(3) by (1)H NMR, on the other hand, a barrier of only 89 kJ/mol was determined. The S-M and S-P conformers of the diastereomers of o-methyl, alpha-naphthyl and o-iodo derivatives have been assigned by NOESY experiments and the kinetic and thermodynamic constants for the interconversion between the S-M and S-P conformers were determined. 相似文献
