Liquidambar orientalis Mill., commonly called the Anatolian sweetgum or Sigla tree, is endemic to southwestern Turkey. It has been historically significant in traditional medicine. In our research, we delved into the therapeutic attributes of its oil, emphasizing its antioxidant, antimicrobial, and antitumor properties. The primary chemical constituent of the gum is styrene, accounting for 78.5 %. The gum demonstrated antioxidant capabilities in several assays, including in 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2′-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS), cupric reducing antioxidant capacity (CUPRAC) and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP). It displayed bactericidal actions against various gram-positive bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus, and gram-negative strains, including Escherichia coli. Additionally, the oil showcased potent antitumor effects against breast (MDA-MB-231), lung (A549), and prostate (PC3) cancer cell lines. These effects were found to be both time- and dose-dependent. L. orientalis Mill. oil showed the best antitumor activity against breast, lung, and prostate cancer cell lines after the 24 h and 48 h treatment. Its oil might induce autophagy in the PC3 prostate cancer cell line, whereas its cytotoxicity against MDA-MB-231 and A549 cancer cell lines might not be correlated with autophagy or apoptosis pathways. In conclusion, the oil from the Sigla tree offers promising therapeutic potential and warrants further exploration. 相似文献

Drought is one of the major environmental stress that adversely affect the growth and development of oil seed plant, safflower. There is a limited knowledge on proteomic responses to support physiological, biochemical changes in how safflowers can regulate growth and metabolism under drought conditions and followed by re-watering. The changes in morphological, physiological, biochemical and proteomics of safflower genotypes (Carthamus tinctorius L.; Remzibey-05 and Linas, tolerant and sensitive cultivars, respectively, and C. oxyacantha M. Bieb., wild type) after exposure to drought and followed by re-watering have been examined. Drought negatively affected the shoot weight, water content, chlorophyll fluorescence, and biochemical parameters, including photosynthetic pigment, proline, MDA, and H2O2 contents and antioxidant enzyme activities in all genotypes, while the re-watering period allowed Remzibey-05 to recover, and it even provided the wild type completely recovered (approximately 100%). A total of 72 protein spots were observed as differently accumulated under treatments. The identified proteins were mainly involved in photosynthesis and carbohydrate, protein, defense, and energy metabolisms. Protein accumulation related to these metabolisms in Remzibey-05 were decreased under drought, while increased following re-watering. However, sensitive cultivar, Linas, could not exhibit an effective performance under drought and recovery when compared with other safflower genotypes. Hypercholesterolemia is a major risk factor for atherosclerosis and related occlusive vascular diseases. We investigated the effect of low‐dose fluvastatin (2 mg kg?1 day?1) on antioxidant enzyme activities [superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase], vascular reactivity changes and oxidatively induced DNA damage in early stage of atherosclerosis in hypercholesterolemic rabbits. The animals were divided into three groups each composed of 10 rabbits. The control group received a regular rabbit chow diet, and the cholesterol group had hypercholesterolemic diet (2%, 4 weeks). The fluvastatin group was given hypercholesterolemic diet plus fluvastatin. Dietary intake of cholesterol significantly increased total cholesterol levels in rabbits (control, 0.85 ± 0.29; cholesterol, 12.04 ± 4.61; fluvastatin, 8.07 ± 2.72 mmol l?1 ). Hypercholesterolemic diet revealed discernible fatty streaks in arcus aortae. Fluvastatin significantly reduced the areas of the lesions. The diet significantly increased SOD activities in both erythrocyte and tissue. Treatment with fluvastatin normalized the increased activity of SOD in both erythrocyte and aortic tissues from the cholesterol group. Cholesterol feeding decreased the sensitivity to acetylcholine, and treatment with fluvastatin significantly restored the diminished sensitivity to acetylcholine in thoracic aortae. Cholesterol feeding caused oxidatively induced DNA damage in liver tissues determined by the increased levels of 8‐hydroxyguanine (8‐OH‐Gua) and 2,6‐diamino‐4‐hydroxy‐5‐formamidopyrimidine (FapyGua). Fluvastatin decreased only FapyGua level in liver. In conclusion, our results may suggest that fluvastatin seems to play a protective role on high cholesterol‐induced oxidative stress and DNA damage. Background
It is known that tissue and serum sialic acid levels may be altered by malignant transformation. In this study, sialic acid levels were determined in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BAL) and serum in two groups of patients with lung cancer and non-malignant diseases of the lung. 相似文献205.
The genetic polymorphism of the β-lactoglobulin gene was investigated in three native Turkish sheep breeds. The study was
carried out on 108 sheep (29 Kıvırcık, 38 G?k?eada, and 41 Sakız) by means of PCR-RFLP methods. Two genetic variants (A and
B) and three genotypes (AA, AB, and BB) of β-lactoglobulin have been identified. The gene frequencies of β-LG A and B were
0.7759 and 0.2241 in Kıvırcık, 0.7632 and 0.2368 in G?k?eada, and 0.9756 and 0.0244 in Sakız breeds, respectively. The populations
were in Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium in all samples from the three breeds. 相似文献

This is the first report on the separation and biological assessment of all metabolites derived from Pulicaria armena (Asteraceae) which is an endemic species narrowly distributed in the eastern part of Turkey. The phytochemical analysis of P. armena resulted in the identification of one simple phenolic glucoside together with eight flavon and flavonol derivatives whose chemical structures were elucidated by NMR experiments and by the comparison of the spectral data with the relevant literature. The screening of all molecules for their antimicrobial, anti-quorum sensing, and cytotoxic activities revealed the biological potential of some of the isolated compounds. Additionally, quorum sensing inhibitory activity of quercetagetin 5,7,3’ trimethyl ether was supported by molecular docking studies in the active site of LasR which is the primary regulator of this cell-to-cell communication system in bacteria. Lastly, the critical molecular properties indicating drug-likeness of the compounds isolated from P. armena were predicted. As microbial infections can be a serious problem for cancer patients with compromised immune systems, this comprehensive phytochemical research on P. armena with its anti-quorum sensing and cytotoxic compounds can provide a new approach to the treatment. 相似文献

AbstractThe purpose of this study is to design a digital game design-based STEM activity for fifth-grade students learning about endangered organisms and significance of biodiversity for living. This activity was carried out with twenty students in a public school in Eastern Black Sea Region of Turkey during academic year of 2018–2019 spring term. This study planned as eight-lesson time (8?×?40?minutes) and completed at this lesson time. The students were given the digital game design challenge in real-life problem context that has been created based on design-based science learning and for which they shall use their knowledge and skills in each of the STEM disciplines. During this design challenge, students worked like a scientist and an engineer. They carried out scientific research and inquiry process in the science discipline, understood the engineering design process in the engineering discipline, established mathematical relations in the mathematics discipline, learned how to make coding in the technology discipline, and used this knowledge and skills thus acquired in their suggested solutions for the design challenge. They designed a digital game by coding and presented science knowledge and skills that acquired from inquiry process. 相似文献
