The bird pollination systems of the New and Old Worlds evolved independently, and differ in many aspects. New World plants are often presented as those adapted to hovering birds while Old World plants to perching birds. Most Neotropical studies also demonstrate that in hummingbird species rich assemblages, only a small number of highly specialized birds exploits the most specialized plants with long corollas. Nevertheless, recent research on bird–plant pollination interactions suggest that sunbird pollination systems in the Old World have converged more with the highly specialized hummingbird pollination systems than previously thought. In this study we focus on the pollination systems of the bird pollination syndrome Impatiens species on Mt. Cameroon, West Africa. We show that despite the high diversity of sunbirds on Mt. Cameroon, only Cyanomitra oritis appear to be important pollinator of all Impatiens species. This asymmetry indicates the absence of pair wise co‐evolution and points to a diffuse co‐evolutionary process resulting in guilds of highly specialized plants and birds; a situation well known from hummingbirds and specialized plant communities of the New World. Additionally, the herbaceous habits of Impatiens species, the frequent adaptations to pollination by hovering birds, and the habitat preference for understory in tropical forests or epiphytic growth, resemble the highly specialized Neotropical plants. © 2015 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2015, 115 , 127–133.  相似文献

We discovered two new taxa of Achnanthidium and Encyonema occurring with high abundance in the upstream of the Yom River, which is one of four major rivers in Northern Thailand. Achnanthidium pseudoconspicuum var. yomensis var. nov. closely resembles Achnanthidium pseudoconspicuum var. pseudoconspicuum in scanning electron microscopy (SEM), but has clearly different valve morphometry under the light microscopy (LM). Achnanthidium pseudoconspicuum var. yomensis is also similar to A. japonicum in valve morphology under LM, but differs to this species based on SEM observation. Encyonema yuwadeeanum sp. nov. shows similarities to Encyonema leei and Encyonema subkukenanum, but differs in valve shape and/or polar fissure shape. We discuss the possible valve ontogenetic relationship between Achnanthidium and Cymbellales based on the detailed areolae structures of these two new taxa.  相似文献

Disruption of cell cycle checkpoints and interference with the normal cell cycle progression frequently result in cell death or malignant transformation. Hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] is a well-known carcinogen that has been implicated in the occurrence of many types of human malignancies, including lung cancer. However, the exact mechanism by which Cr(VI) causes malignant transformation in the lung remains unknown. We have demonstrated that chronic exposure to a noncytotoxic concentration of Cr(VI) induced a variety of chromosomal abnormalities, including premature sister chromatid separation, chromosomal breakage and the presence of lagging/misaligned chromosomes. After treatment with nocodazole, both HeLa and normal lung bronchial epithelial cells were arrested at mitosis. However, Cr(VI) significantly compromised M-phase arrest induced by nocodazole. Cr(VI) suppressed BubR1 activation and reduced expression of Emi1, leading to an unscheduled activation of APC/C. Consistent with this observation, Cr(VI) treatment caused enhanced polyubiquitination of geminin during mitotic release, while it deregulated the activity of Cdt1, a DNA replication licensing factor. Combined, these results suggest that Cr(VI)-induced chromosomal instability is partly due to a perturbation of APC/C activities, leading to chromosomal instability.Key words: chromium, checkpoint, chromosome instability, APC/C, BubR1, Emi1  相似文献

The ultrastructure of the contact surfaces (integument and intestinal wall) of the nematode Passalurus ambiguus has been studied. The integument is composed according to the scheme common for all nematodes and includes a cuticle, hypodermis and a muscular layer. The specificity is with regard to the epicuticle, the different number of the cuticular sublayers in the anterior, central and the posterior parts of the worm body and the absence of a basal cuticular membrane. The intestinal wall consists of epithelial cells with microvilli. The ultrastructural characteristics of both contact surfaces indicate their main functions--absorption, secretion, transport, protection, movement, etc.  相似文献

A new modified stilbene dimer, diptoindonesin D (1), was isolated from the acetone extract of the tree bark of Hopea dryobalanoides, together with seven known compounds, parviflorol (2), (-)-balanocarpol (3), heimiol A (4), hopeafuran (5), (+)-alpha-viniferin (6), vaticanol B (7) and (-)-hopeaphenol (8). Cytotoxic properties of compounds 1-8 were evaluated against murine leukemia P-388 cells. Compound 8 was found to be the most active with IC50 of 5.7 microM.  相似文献

The role of amino acids (AA) on translational regulation in mammary epithelial cells cultured under lactogenic conditions was studied. The rates of total protein synthesis and beta-lactoglobulin (BLG) synthesis in mouse CID-9 cells were 2.1- or 3.1-fold higher, respectively, than in their bovine L-1 counterparts. Total AA deprivation or selective deprivation of Leu had a negative protein-specific effect on BLG synthesis that was more pronounced in bovine cells than in murine cells. Dephosphorylation of eukaryotic initiation factor 4E-binding protein 1 (4E-BP1) and S6 kinase (S6K1) on Thr(389) but not on Ser(411) was also more prominent in bovine cells. Noteably, deprivation of Leu had a less marked effect on BLG synthesis and 4E-BP1 or S6K1 phosphorylation than deprivation of all AA. In AA-deprived CID-9 cells, Leu specifically restored BLG synthesis from pre-existing mRNA whereas AA also restored total protein synthesis. This restoration was associated with a more pronounced effect on 4E-BP1 and S6K1 phosphorylation in bovine versus murine cells. Rapamycin specifically reduced Leu- and AA-stimulated BLG translation initiation in a dose-dependent manner. A further reduction was observed for Leu-treated cells in the presence of LY294002, a PI3K (phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase) inhibitor, which also reduced total protein synthesis. These findings suggest that direct signaling from AA to the translational machinery is involved in determining the rates of milk protein synthesis in mammary epithelial cells.  相似文献

Somatostatin inhibits dendritic cell responsiveness to Helicobacter pylori   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Somatostatin is a regulatory peptide found in abundance in the stomach. We have previously shown that somatostatin is required for IL-4-mediated resolution of Helicobacter pylori gastritis. In the current study, we hypothesize that somatostatin acts directly on antigen-presenting cells in the stomach to lessen the severity of gastritis. To test this hypothesis, we first show that CD11c+ dendritic cells are present in the infected tissue of mice with H. pylori-induced gastritis. Pretreatment of bone marrow-derived dendritic cells with somatostatin results in decreased IL-12 production, and lower splenocyte proliferation induced by H. pylori-stimulated dendritic cells. Furthermore, octreotide, a somatostatin analogue, is more potent than somatostatin in suppressing IL-12 release by H. pylori-stimulated dendritic cells through an NF-kappaB-independent pathway. In addition, IL-4 stimulates somatostatin secretion from dendritic cells. In conclusion, somatostatin inhibits dendritic cell activation by H. pylori; a possible mechanism by which IL-4 mediates resolution of gastritis. We suggest that octreotide may be effective in treating immune-mediated diseases of the stomach.  相似文献

ARGONAUTE4 (AGO4) and RNA polymerase IV (Pol IV) are required for DNA methylation guided by 24 nucleotide small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) in Arabidopsis thaliana. Here we show that AGO4 localizes to nucleolus-associated bodies along with the Pol IV subunit NRPD1b; the small nuclear RNA (snRNA) binding protein SmD3; and two markers of Cajal bodies, trimethylguanosine-capped snRNAs and the U2 snRNA binding protein U2B'. AGO4 interacts with the C-terminal domain of NRPD1b, and AGO4 protein stability depends on upstream factors that synthesize siRNAs. AGO4 is also found, along with the DNA methyltransferase DRM2, throughout the nucleus at presumed DNA methylation target sites. Cajal bodies are conserved sites for the maturation of ribonucleoprotein complexes. Our results suggest a function for Cajal bodies as a center for the assembly of an AGO4/NRPD1b/siRNA complex, facilitating its function in RNA-directed gene silencing at target loci.  相似文献
