It is proposed that anthers of Lilium longiflorum Croft approaching the end of premeiotic mitosis reach a state described as meiosis readiness after which cells in premeiotic prophase are unable to complete a mitotic division but despiralize to interphase and enter a meiotic division. Many of the laggard premeiotic cells begin despiralization before reaching an extremely contracted state of late prophase. Premeiotic despiralization is not, therefore, attributed to a deficiency in metaphase but to an inability of these cells to complete prophase. Premeiotic despiralization appears to be preceded by a slowing-down of prophase development. There is variation among anthers and anther regions in the onset of prophase retardation and meiosis readiness. It is suggested that meiosis readiness depends upon a gradual accumulation of meiosis-inducing substances in the cytoplasm of the premeiotic cells. It has not been determined whether the cells that undergo premeiotic despiralization give rise to the giant microsporocytes with shattered chromosomes observed at late prophase of meiosis. 相似文献

The levels of the four deoxyribonucleoside triphosphate pools and the distribution of cells in the various phases of the cell cycle have been examined in Chinese hamster cells as thymidine, present as a regular constituent in the growth medium, was removed in stages. The results indicate that: 1. Duration of the DNA synthetic phase was lengthened when thymidine was removed from the growth medium. 2.Temporally correlated with lengthening of the DNA synthetic phase upon thymidine removal was a 7-fold increase in level of the dCTP pool, reduction in the dGTP pools, and little or no change in dATP pool. 3.Radioactive labeling procedures indicated that expansion of the dCTP pool could be completely accounted for by increased ribonucleotide reductase activity and that the dTTP pool switched from a largely exogenous thymidine source to endogenous dTTP synthesis as the extracellular thymidine concentration was reduced. 4.Deoxyuridine and thymidine were apparently transported by the same system in Chinese hamster cells, while deoxycytidine was transported by a different system. Although deoxycytidine transport was unaffected by thymidine, phosphorylation of intracellular deoxycytidine compounds to the triphosphate level was stimulated by thymidine. We examined complex geographical patterns in the morphology of a kleptoparasitic spider, Argyrodes kumadai, across its distributional range in Japan. To disentangle biotic and abiotic factors underlying morphological variation, latitudinal trends were investigated in two traits, body size and relative leg length, across separate transition zones for host use and voltinism. Statistical analyses revealed complex sawtooth clines. Adult body size dramatically changed at the transition zones for host use and voltinism, and exhibited a latitudinal decline following the converse to Bergmann’s cline under the same host use and voltinism in both sexes. A similar pattern was observed for relative leg length in females but not in males. A genetic basis for a part of observed differences in morphology was supported by a common-garden experiment. Our data suggest that local adaptation to factors other than season length such as resource availability (here associated with host use) obscures underlying responses to latitude. 相似文献
