Summary The distribution of choline acetyltransferase (ChAT)-like and glutamate decarboxylase (GAD)-like immunoreactivity in the cochleae of 15 adult Wistar white rats was investigated using the peroxidase-antiperoxidase (PAP) technique. A monoclonal antibody to ChAT and a polyclonal antiserum to GAD were used. Immunoreaction was investigated quantitatively, in the electron microscope, on tangential sections of the tunnel of Corti and the rows of outer hair cells. ChAT-like and GAD-like immunoreactivity was found in all efferent nerve fibres in the tunnel of Corti and in all efferent synapses on the outer hair cells. A coexistence of ChAT and GAD in the efferent system to the outer hair cells of the rat is therefore assumed.  相似文献

Adult male Leucorchestris arenicola can walk round-trips of several tens of meters in search of females. Most excursions end with the spiders returning to their burrow. For small animals homing over distances of several meters is theoretically impossible without the aid of external cues. It was investigated, whether the spiders use local cues or they rely solely on global cues. Individually marked male spiders were captured during their excursions and displaced several meters inside an opaque box. Ten out of twelve displaced spiders returned to their burrows. This shows that the male L. arenicola are using local cues during their homing, as the comparatively small displacement distances could not be detected by means of global, e.g. celestial cues. In order to test whether the spiders could be using olfactory guidance, the burrows were displaced by 2 m while the spiders were out on their journeys. In 12 out of 15 experiments, the spiders did not find their burrows. These results show that the burrows do not function as olfactory beacons for the homing spiders.  相似文献

The relationship between root stunting caused by the cereal cyst nematode and levels of two root growth inhibiting hormones, abscisic acid and ethylene, was investigated in aseptically cultured root segments and in intact roots of two oat cultivars differing in tolerance to the nematode. Cultured root segments of oat cultivars New Zealand Cape (tolerant) and Sual (intolerant) were inoculated with sterilized Heterodera avenae second-stage juveniles. Suppressed growth of root axes and emerged laterals following nematode penetration corresponded to an increase in abscisic acid and ethylene in roots of both intolerant and tolerant cultivars. When the experiment was repeated on intact root systems, nematodes retarded root growth of Sual more than New Zealand Cape despite an increase in ABA and ethylene in both cultivars. Abscisic acid and (or) ethylene may be involved in growth inhibition of H. avenae-infected roots but appear to play no direct role in determining tolerance.  相似文献
