Genetic variability and drift load in populations of an aquatic snail   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
Abstract Population genetic theory predicts that in small populations, random genetic drift will fix and accumulate slightly deleterious mutations, resulting in reduced reproductive output. This genetic load due to random drift (i.e., drift load) can increase the extinction risk of small populations. We studied the relationship between genetic variability (indicator of past population size) and reproductive output in eight isolated, natural populations of the hermaphroditic snail Lymnaea stagnalis . In a common laboratory environment, snails from populations with the lowest genetic variability mature slower and have lower fecundity than snails from genetically more variable populations. This result suggests that past small population size has resulted in increased drift load, as predicted. The relationship between genetic variability and reproductive output is independent of the amount of nonrandom mating within populations. However, reproductive output and the current density of snails in the populations were not correlated. Instead, data from the natural populations suggest that trematode parasites may determine, at least in part, population densities of the snails.  相似文献

Intraspecific microhabitat segregation is expected to arise when there are age- or sex-specific differences in predation risk. The degree to which conspecific predation (cannibalism) can generate this risk, however, is poorly understood. In this paper, we examine microhabitat use, cannibalism, and individual responses to the presence of conspecifics in Thermosphaeroma thermophilum, an endangered isopod crustacean species that is endemic to a single, thermal spring in Socorro, N.M. USA. In samples from the natural habitat, juveniles (mancas) were found mainly on vegetation, whereas adults were found predominantly on bottom sediments. Females were found on vegetation more often than males. In laboratory containers without refuges, males cannibalized females, males and females cannibalized mancas, and mancas cannibalized each other, even in the presence of alternative food. When placed in containers provided with refuges, mancas actively avoided adults. We suggest, therefore, that cannibalism in T. thermophilum generates age-, size-, and sex-specific predation risks which are responsible for microhabitat segregation between mancas and adults, and between males and females. Since interspecific predation in the spring is negligible, cannibalism appears to play a significant role in population regulation and behavioral evolution in this species. We recommend, given the current “endangered” status of this species, that microhabitat heterogeneity be maintained in its native spring because it provides refuges from cannibalism and may support a larger and more viable natural population. We explore evolutionarily stable co-evolution of host-macroparasite interactions in a discrete-time two-species population dynamics model, in which the dynamics may be stable, cyclic or chaotic. The macroparasites are assumed to harm host individuals through decreased reproductive output. Hosts may develop costly immune responses to defend themselves against parasites. Parasites compete with conspecifics by adjusting their fecundities. Overall, the presence of both parasites and the immune response in hosts produces more stable dynamics and lower host population sizes than that observed in the absence of the parasites. In our evolutionary analyses, we show that maximum parasite fecundity is always an evolutionarily stable strategy (ESS), irrespective of the type of population interaction, and that maximum parasite fecundity generally induces a minimum parasite population size through over-exploitation of the host. Phenotypic polymorphisms with respect to immunity in the host species are common and expected in ESS host strategies: the benefits of immunication depend on the frequency of the immune hosts in the population. In particular, the steady-state proportions of immune hosts depend, in addition to all the parameters of the parasite dynamics only on the cost of immunity and on the virulence of parasites in susceptible hosts. The implicit ecological dynamics of the host-parasite interaction affect the proportion of immune host individuals in the population. Furthermore, when changes in certain population parameters cause the dynamics of the host-parasite interaction to move from stability to cyclicity and then to chaos, the proportion of immune hosts tends to decrease; however, we also detected counter-examples to this result. As a whole, incorporating immunological and genetic aspects, as well as life-history trade-offs, into host-macroparasite dynamics produces a rich extension to the patterns observed in the models of ecological interactions and epidemics, and deserves more attention than is currently the case.  相似文献

Optimal feeding is often constrained by predation avoidance, which may direct feeding to take place on more sheltered, but less profitable, parts of the habitat. Though constrained, feeding preferences and/or digestive capabilities should co-evolve with the energetic and nutritional needs of the animal. These needs, as well as risk taking for these goals, may differ between the sexes. We studied sexual differences in the utilization of the brown alga Fucus vesiculosus by the marine isopod Idotea baltica . In a feeding preference test with small pieces of alga both sexes prefer the apical, newly grown parts to the basal parts. However, males show stronger preference than females. When isopods are reared on the apical or basal part of the alga alone, sexes grow differently on these parts. Females gain weight equally well and their intermolt duration is the same on both parts of the alga, while males perform clearly worse on the basal than on the apical part. Despite the better quality of the apical parts of the alga, in a grazing experiment in a "semi-natural" environment with whole bushes of F. vesiculosus also the basal parts are consumed, and even preferred over apical parts by females. We suggest that feeding preferences are subordinate to microhabitat choice, and therefore predation avoidance constrains optimal feeding. We hypothesize that the better ability of females than that of males to utilize the basal parts of the alga for growth is a co-adaptation to their risk-averse general reproductive strategy. We discuss the sexual differences in host plant utilization in the context of reproductive strategies of the sexes, especially different risk sensitivity of foraging, and its potential consequences on plant-herbivore interaction.  相似文献

Emerging infectious diseases are a persistent threat to humans and food production but the mechanisms promoting the emergence of novel pathogens are not fully understood. The widely discussed explanations for pathogen emergence include range shifts, coincidental evolution of virulence, and host immunity variation. Here we propose a novel mechanism of virulence evolution that relies on environmental variability. Our model combines an environmental community experiencing random or periodic variability, to a classical SIR epidemiological model. We assume that environmentally growing, potentially infective variants arise at low frequency from a resident, non‐infective (benign microbial) strain through random variation on genetic material. We found that environmental perturbations commonly promote establishment of sporadic infections or persistent epidemics, by creating transient periods of low competition, which can in turn be exploited by an infective strain. Given the ubiquitous nature of potentially pathogenic environmental micro‐organisms and environmental variability, this mechanism provides a plausible explanation for emerging diseases.  相似文献

Seipin is an endoplasmic reticulum (ER) membrane protein implicated in lipid droplet (LD) biogenesis and mutated in severe congenital lipodystrophy (BSCL2). Here, we show that seipin is stably associated with nascent ER–LD contacts in human cells, typically via one mobile focal point per LD. Seipin appears critical for such contacts since ER–LD contacts were completely missing or morphologically aberrant in seipin knockout and BSCL2 patient cells. In parallel, LD mobility was increased and protein delivery from the ER to LDs to promote LD growth was decreased. Moreover, while growing LDs normally acquire lipid and protein constituents from the ER, this process was compromised in seipin‐deficient cells. In the absence of seipin, the initial synthesis of neutral lipids from exogenous fatty acid was normal, but fatty acid incorporation into neutral lipids in cells with pre‐existing LDs was impaired. Together, our data suggest that seipin helps to connect newly formed LDs to the ER and that by stabilizing ER–LD contacts seipin facilitates the incorporation of protein and lipid cargo into growing LDs in human cells.  相似文献

Opportunist saprotrophic pathogens differ from obligatory pathogens due to their capability in host-independent growth in environmental reservoirs. Thus, the outside-host environment potentially influences host-pathogen dynamics. Despite the socio-economical importance of these pathogens, theory on their dynamics is practically missing. We analyzed a novel epidemiological model that couples outside-host density-dependent growth to host-pathogen dynamics. Parameterization was based on columnaris disease, a major hazard in fresh water fish farms caused by saprotrophic Flavobacterium columnare. Stability analysis and numerical simulations revealed that the outside-host growth maintains high proportion of infected individuals, and under some conditions can drive host extinct. The model can show stable or cyclic dynamics, and the outside-host growth regulates the frequency and intensity of outbreaks. This result emerges because the density-dependence stabilizes dynamics. Our analysis demonstrates that coupling of outside-host growth and traditional host-pathogen dynamics has profound influence on disease prevalence and dynamics. This also has implications on the control of these diseases.  相似文献

Nutrient enrichment in coastal marine systems can have profound impacts on trophic networks. In the Baltic Sea, the population of Great Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo sinensis) has increased nearly exponentially since the mid-1990s, and colonies of these seabirds can be important sources of nitrogen enrichment for nearby benthic communities due to guano runoff. In this study we used stable isotope analyses and diet mixing models to determine the extent of nitrogen enrichment from cormorant colonies, as well as to examine any possible changes in herbivore diet preferences due to enrichment. We found significantly higher levels of δ15N in samples from colony islands than control islands for producers (the dominant macroalga Fucus vesiculosus, filamentous algae, and periphyton) and herbivores, as well as a positive correlation between enrichment and nest density in colony sites. We also found that enrichment increased over the breeding season of the cormorants, with higher enrichment in late summer than early summer. While the amount of total nitrogen did not differ between colony and control sites, the amount of guano-based nitrogen in algae was >50% in most sites, indicating high nitrogen enrichment from colonies. Herbivores (the isopod Idotea balthica and the gastropod Theodoxus fluviatilis) preferred feeding upon the dominant macroalga Fucus vesiculosus rather than on filamentous algae or periphyton in both control and colony, and there was a significant increase in periphyton consumption near colony sites. Overall, guano from cormorant colonies seems to have effects on both producers and herbivores, as well as the potential to modify algae-herbivore interactions.  相似文献

Plant secondary metabolites provide resistance against herbivory if they are capable of decreasing herbivore performance or deterring feeding. Here we test the effects of phlorotannin-containing polar extracts from the brown alga Fucus vesiculosus on the assimilation efficiency and feeding preferences of the herbivorous isopod Idotea baltica. We test the effects separately for each sex of the isopod to test the hypothesis that the digestive efficiencies of the sexes may have diverged. Phlorotannin-containing polar extracts were incorporated into an agar-based artificial food in varying amounts. We also varied the quality of the food, using high-quality food containing animal proteins and low-quality food containing only algal material. The total assimilation efficiency as well as the assimilation efficiencies of carbon and nitrogen decreased with an increasing concentration of phlorotannin-containing extracts. The negative effects on carbon and nitrogen assimilation were higher when extracts were incorporated in the high-quality food. Females were consistently more efficient than males in all assimilation measures; there were no interactions between sex and food quality or phlorotannin concentration, suggesting that the digestive efficiency of the sexes had diverged but that the two sexes responded similarly to phlorotannin enriched artificial food. Although phlorotannin-containing extracts were harmful to performance, they did not deter feeding in preference tests. On the contrary: the isopods preferred the food containing more phlorotannins, suggesting that phlorotannins may act as cues in host recognition. Thus phlorotannins were inefficient deterrents, and I. baltica seems to be adapted to utilizing phlorotannin-containing foods despite their detrimental effects on assimilation. We suggest that F. vesiculosus provides a predation refuge and temporal constancy in availability for I. baltica, both of which select for the ability to utilize it as a food. Phlorotannin-containing polar extracts from F. vesiculosus are still harmful digestibility reducers, and may thereby prevent complete specialization and generate selection for utilization of a wider host range.  相似文献

Non-linearities are commonly observed in the responses of organisms to environment. They potentially modify the qualitative and quantitative properties of population dynamics. We studied how non-linear responses to environment, or "noise filters", influence population variability and extinction risk by introducing coloured noise to the growth rate in the Hassell single-species model. The consequences of noise filtering were analysed by comparing the model dynamics with linearly filtered and non-linearly filtered noise that have the same mean. Three biologically plausible filters we used: saturating, unimodal optimum type, and sigmoid responses.
Filtering can either decrease or increase population variability when compared to linear noise response. The effect of noise filtering on variability is most pronounced with stable population dynamics and the outcome depends on the filter type, population growth rate, and noise colour.
Non-linear noise filtering predominantly increases extinction risks when population growth rate is low (R<5). As an exception, saturating filter has a window of decreased risk at very low growth rate and reddened environment. In the unstable range of the dynamics (15These results suggest that accounting for the non-linear responses to environment should be considered when estimating extinction risks and population variability. Moreover, the non-linear responses make noise colour a more important factor in these analyses.  相似文献
