Risk of Malaria Reemergence in Southern France: Testing Scenarios with a Multiagent Simulation Model
The Camargue, a region in southern France, is considered a potential site for malaria reemergence. All the suitable factors
of the disease transmission system are present—competent mosquito vectors, habitats for their breeding, and susceptible people—except
for the parasite. The objective of this study was to test potential drivers of malaria reemergence in this system after possible
changes in biological attributes of vectors, agricultural practices, land use, tourism activities, and climate. Scenarios
of plausible futures were formulated and then simulated using a spatially explicit and dynamic multiagent simulation: the
MALCAM model. Scenarios were developed by varying the value of model inputs. Model outputs were compared based on the contact
rate between people and potential malaria vectors, and the number of new infections in case of reintroduction of the parasite
in the region. Model simulations showed that the risk of malaria reemergence is low in the Camargue. If the disease would
reemerge, it would be the result of a combination of unfavorable conditions: introduction of a large population of infectious
people or mosquitoes, combined with high levels of people–vector contacts resulting from significant changes in land use,
tourism activities, agricultural policies, biological evolution of mosquitoes, and climate changes. The representation in
the MALCAM model of interactions and feedbacks between different agents, and between agents and their environment, led in
some cases to counterintuitive results. Results from scenario analyses can help local public health authorities in policy
formulation. 相似文献

Rat neural stem cells/neural progenitors (NSC/NP) are generally grown in serum‐free medium. In this study, NSC/NP were supplemented with the main long‐chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) present in the brain, arachidonic acid (AA), or docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and were monitored for their growth. Lipid and fatty acid contents of the cells were also determined. Under standard conditions, the cells were characterized by phospholipids displaying a highly saturated profile, and very low levels of PUFAs. When cultured in the presence of PUFAs, the cells easily incorporated them into the phospholipid fraction. We also compared the presence of three membrane proteins in the lipid raft fractions: GFR and connexin 43 contents in the rafts were increased by DHA supplementation, whereas Gβ subunit content was not significantly modified. The restoration of DHA levels in the phospholipids could profoundly affect protein localization and, consequently, their functionalities. J. Cell. Spatially accurate, contemporary data on human population distributions are vitally important to many applied and theoretical researchers. The Southeast Asia region has undergone rapid urbanization and population growth over the past decade, yet existing spatial population distribution datasets covering the region are based principally on population count data from censuses circa 2000, with often insufficient spatial resolution or input data to map settlements precisely. Here we outline approaches to construct a database of GIS-linked circa 2010 census data and methods used to construct fine-scale (∼100 meters spatial resolution) population distribution datasets for each country in the Southeast Asia region. Landsat-derived settlement maps and land cover information were combined with ancillary datasets on infrastructure to model population distributions for 2010 and 2015. These products were compared with those from two other methods used to construct commonly used global population datasets. Results indicate mapping accuracies are consistently higher when incorporating land cover and settlement information into the AsiaPop modelling process. Using existing data, it is possible to produce detailed, contemporary and easily updatable population distribution datasets for Southeast Asia. The 2010 and 2015 datasets produced are freely available as a product of the AsiaPop Project and can be downloaded from: www.asiapop.org. 相似文献

Peroxiredoxin‐5 (PRDX5) is an antioxidant enzyme which differs from the other peroxiredoxins with regards to its enzymatic mechanism, its high affinity for organic peroxides and peroxynitrite and its wide subcellular distribution. In particular, the mitochondrial isoform of PRDX5 confers a remarkable cytoprotection toward oxidative stress to mammalian cells. Mitochondrial dysfunction and disruption of Ca2+ homeostasis are implicated in neurodegeneration. Growing evidence supports that endoplasmic reticulum (ER) could operate in tandem with mitochondria to regulate intracellular Ca2+ fluxes in neurodegenerative processes. Here, we overexpressed mitochondrial PRDX5 in SH‐SY5Y cells to dissect the role of this enzyme in 1‐methyl‐4‐phenylpyridinium (MPP)+‐induced cell death. Our data show that mitochondria‐dependent apoptosis triggered by MPP+, assessed by the measurement of caspase‐9 activation and mitochondrial DNA damage, is prevented by mitochondrial PRDX5 overexpression. Moreover, PRDX5 overexpression blocks the increase in intracellular Ca2+, Ca2+‐dependent activation of calpains and Bax cleavage. Finally, using Ca2+ channel inhibitors (Nimodipine, Dantrolene and 2‐APB), we show that Ca2+ release arises essentially from ER stores through 1,4,5‐inositol‐trisphosphate receptors (IP3R). Altogether, our results suggest that the MPP+ mitochondrial pathway of apoptosis is regulated by mitochondrial PRDX5 in a process that could involve redox modulation of Ca2+ transporters via a crosstalk between mitochondria and ER. 相似文献

Background
The accurate determination of orthology and inparalogy relationships is essential for comparative sequence analysis, functional gene annotation and evolutionary studies. Various methods have been developed based on either simple blast all-versus-all pairwise comparisons and/or time-consuming phylogenetic tree analyses. 相似文献17.

n-3 Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) support whole brain energy metabolism but their impact on neuroenergetics in specific brain areas and during neuronal activation is still poorly understood. We tested the effect of feeding rats as control, n-3 PUFA-deficient diet, or docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)-supplemented diet on the expression of key genes in fronto-parietal cortex and hippocampal neuroenergetics before and after neuronal stimulation (activated) by an enriched environment. Compared to control rats, n-3 deficiency specifically repressed GLUT1 gene expression in the fronto-parietal cortex in basal state and also during neuronal activation which specifically stimulated GLUT1. In contrast, in the CA1 area, n-3 deficiency improved the glutamatergic synapse function in both neuronal states (glutamate transporters, Na(+)/K(+) ATPase). DHA supplementation induced overexpression of genes encoding enzymes of the oxidative phosphorylation system and the F1F0 ATP synthase in the CA1 area. We conclude that n-3 deficiency repressed GLUT1 gene expression in the cerebral cortex, while DHA supplementation improved the mitochondrial ATP generation in the CA1 area of the hippocampus. 相似文献

Foraging in stopover areas influences nutritional condition of birds during spring migration. Our purpose was to determine if body mass, percent carcass water, and serum biochemistry would predict energy reserves (carcass fat and protein) in northern pintails (Anas acuta) at a spring staging area, Lake St. Pierre in Québec, Canada (46 degrees 11 'N, 73 degrees 08 'W). Northern pintails were collected during spring 1997 (14 April-9 May). In this staging area, body mass and percent body water successfully estimated carcass protein and fat in male northern pintails, but only carcass protein in females. None of the seven blood parameters we used accurately estimated nutritional reserves in staging northern pintails. These findings suggest that investigators must use direct estimates of carcass reserves to examine nutrient reserve requirements for egg production, migration, or body maintenance during spring migration. 相似文献

We evaluated the occurrence of social wasps in the decomposition process in tropical rainforest in central Amazonia (Ducke Reserve, Manaus, Brazil), using cadavers of rats as attractants, exposed in suspended cages. Ten species, in three genera, of social wasps were collected only in the initial stages of decay (fresh and bloated). Five species were collected, mainly in the fresh stage, feeding on flesh: Agelaia angulata, Agelaia constructor, Agelaia fulvofasciata, Agelaia pallipes and Angiopolybia pallens. Five species were collected, mainly in the bloated stage, feeding on flesh and eggs and first instar larvae of dipteran: Agelaia testacea, Angiopolybia obidensis, Apoica arborea, Apoica pallens and Apoica thoracica. Due to the aspect of the injuries caused by the wasps to the carcass, they may be mistaken as skin ulcers, burns or abrasions, which may mislead a forensic investigation. 相似文献
