Grazing can modify vegetation structure and species composition through selective consumption, modifying plant litter quality and hence decomposability. In most grasslands, moderate stocking rates maintain a mosaic of high‐quality patches, preferentially used by herbivores (‘grazing lawns’), and low‐quality tall patches, which are avoided. In grazing lawns decomposition rates can be accelerated because of the higher litter quality of its component species and, besides, through the indirect effect of increased nutrient availability in soil. We aimed at testing this indirect effect using standard materials, comparing their decomposition in grazing lawns, open and closed tall tussock grasslands. We selected 10 patches of each type and sampled floristic composition, soil variables and cattle dung deposition. Standard materials were filter paper and Poa stuckertii litter. We prepared litterbags of 0.3 mm (thin mesh) and 1 mm mesh size (coarse mesh). Samples were incubated for 65 days in two ways: above‐ground (thin and coarse mesh) and below‐ground (only thin mesh), aiming at analysing the conditions for decomposition for surface litter and buried litter or dead roots, respectively. Physical and chemical soil variables did not differ among patch types, despite the differences in species composition. Closed tussock grasslands showed the lowest dung deposition, confirming the less intense use of these patches. Soil nitrogen availability (N‐NO3 and N‐NH4+) was not significantly different among patch types. Each standard material followed a different decomposition pattern across patch types. For above‐ground incubated samples, Poa litter decomposed significantly faster in lawns, and slower in open tussock grasslands. Filter paper decomposed significantly faster in closed tussock grasslands than in the other two patch types. Decomposition of below‐ground incubated samples did not significantly differ among patch types, in line with results for soil variables. Above‐ground differences in decomposition may be associated with differences in microclimatic conditions resulting from differences in vegetation structure.  相似文献

Whole genome microarrays were used to study plant gene expression in mature Meloidogyne incognita -induced galls in Arabidopsis. We found 959 genes to be significantly differentially expressed, and two-thirds of these were down-regulated. Microarray results were confirmed by qRT-PCR. The temporal and spatial responses of four differentially expressed genes were analysed using GUS reporter plants following infection with M. incognita and the cyst nematode Heterodera schachtii . The ammonium transporter gene AtAMT1;2 was consistently and locally repressed in response to both nematodes at all developmental stages. The lateral organ boundary domain gene LBD41 showed up-regulation in the feeding sites of both nematode species, although there was variation in expression in saccate H. schachtii female feeding sites. Expression of an actin depolymerizing factor ADF3 and a lipid transfer protein was induced in feeding sites of both nematodes at the fusiform stage and this persisted in feeding sites of saccate M. incognita . These results contribute to the knowledge of how plant gene expression responds to parasitism by these nematodes as well as highlighting further differences in the mechanisms of development and maintenance of these feeding site structures.  相似文献

One hundred and thirty strains of Erwinia amylovora recovered from Spanish foci of fire blight from 1995 to 2000 were characterised and compared to reference strains from different sources and origins. Their rapid identification was performed by double antibody sandwich indirect (DASI) ELISA, using specific monoclonal antibodies against E. amylovora, and molecular confirmation by PCR using primers specific to the native plasmid pEA29. The Spanish strains of E. amylovora grew on different general and selective media producing typical colonies, except one of them that was deficient in levan production, whereas none of them grew on minimal agar medium with copper sulphate and low content of asparagine. All of them were susceptible to tetracycline, streptomycin, kasugamycin and oxolinic acid. Biochemical characterisation of selected strains by API 20E system revealed a great homogeneity, with 80% of the Spanish strains showing one of the two majority API 20E profiles described for E. amylovora, and the remaining strains showing minor differences. Pathogenicity on pear fruits and hypersensitivity reaction was confirmed, but a delayed reaction was observed for two Spanish strains. This is the first characterisation of a large collection of Spanish strains of E. amylovora.  相似文献

Large, vacuolated parenchyma cells from the dormant tuber ofthe Jerusalem Artichoke contain a variety of mitochondrial profiles.Cells of cultured explants contain an even wider range of mitochondrialforms including complex bell shapes, long cylindrical rods,branched structures, and plates. A theory is advanced to explainhow the complex bell-shaped mitochondria, and associated forms,may be derived from simple spheres and rods. Biogenically engineered habitats are constantly changing in space and time, resulting in changes to the landscape and the ecology of associated taxa. Using patchily distributed biogenic habitats on intertidal rocky shores the influences of different aspects of the landscape were investigated, that is, the surrounding matrix and the habitat itself. Experiments to test the effect of the matrix were carried out by transplanting assemblages in artificial habitats from one type of biogenically engineered matrix (created by the tubeworm Galeolaria caespitosa) to another (created by the oyster Saccostrea glomerata). Change to the surrounding matrix resulted in the densities of polychaete worms in central fragments of habitat changing to become more similar to their new surroundings. To test how the habitat influenced predator–prey interactions, polychaetes were transplanted from a complex habitat (created by the turfing alga Corallina officinalis) to less complex habitat (created by the tubeworm G. caespitosa), with or without the presence of the predatory polychaete, Perinereis amblyodonta. This experiment also tested the influence of habitat replacement on densities of polychaetes, regardless of any new interactions between species. Despite coralline turf being a much more complex habitat than Galeolaria, P. amblyodonta successfully preyed on other species of polychaetes in both habitats. Furthermore, in the absence of P. amblyodonta, survival of polychaetes did not differ between the habitats. These types of experiments will be useful for testing similar hypotheses in different landscapes and will assist in gaining a more general understanding of habitat modification.  相似文献

Commercial fishing and climate change have influenced the composition of marine fish assemblages worldwide, but we require a better understanding of their relative influence on long‐term changes in species abundance and body‐size distributions. In this study, we investigated long‐term (1911–2007) variability within a demersal fish assemblage in the western English Channel. The region has been subject to commercial fisheries throughout most of the past century, and has undergone interannual changes in sea temperature of over 2.0 °C. We focussed on a core 30 species that comprised 99% of total individuals sampled in the assemblage. Analyses showed that temporal trends in the abundance of smaller multispecies size classes followed thermal regime changes, but that there were persistent declines in abundance of larger size classes. Consistent with these results, larger‐growing individual species had the greatest declines in body size, and the most constant declines in abundance, while abundance changes of smaller‐growing species were more closely linked to preceding sea temperatures. Together these analyses are suggestive of dichotomous size‐dependent responses of species to long‐term climate change and commercial fishing over a century scale. Small species had rapid responses to the prevailing thermal environment, suggesting their life history traits predisposed populations to respond quickly to changing climates. Larger species declined in abundance and size, reflecting expectations from sustained size‐selective overharvesting. These results demonstrate the importance of considering species traits when developing indicators of human and climatic impacts on marine fauna.  相似文献

We propose to compare avoided emissions from ethanol use in Brazil with emissions caused by the use of fossil fuel, and by land use changes, specifically Amazon deforestation. The avoided emissions of CO2 in Brazil due to ethanol use in 2008 ranged from approximately 9 to 12 Tg C yr?1. These values are an order of magnitude higher than the amount of carbon that could be potentially sequestered in soils if sugarcane cultivation in Brazil switches completely to mechanized harvesting, and two orders of magnitude higher than the carbon emissions in soils cultivated with sugarcane and that undergo harvest with burning. In relation to fossil fuel emissions, ethanol avoided emissions are equivalent to 20–30% of the carbon emissions associated with the use of gasoline and diesel in the transportation sector, and to approximately 10% of the total use of fossil fuel in the country. When compared with the carbon emissions from Amazon deforestation ethanol avoided emissions are again one order of magnitude lower. We conclude that ethanol avoided emissions are relatively important within the transport sector, but are still incipient if compared with the emissions from total fossil fuel combustion and emissions from deforestation indicating that climate mitigation efforts in Brazil needs to focus outside of biofuel production. Consequently, we suggest that Brazil develop equally strong actions towards increased energy efficiency use in the country and, more importantly to drastically reduce carbon emissions associated with Amazon deforestation.  相似文献

Changes in land use patterns and vegetation can trigger ecological change in occupancy and community composition. Among the potential ecological consequences of land use change is altered susceptibility to occupancy by invasive species. We investigated the responses of three introduced mammals (red deer, Cervus elaphus; wild boar, Sus scrofa; and European hare, Lepus europaeus) to replacement of native vegetation by exotic pine plantations in the Patagonian forest‐steppe ecotone using camera‐trap surveys (8633 trap‐days). We used logistic regression models to relate species presence with habitat variables at stand and landscape scales. Red deer and wild boar used pine plantations significantly more frequently than native vegetation. In contrast, occurrence of European hares did not differ between pine plantations and native vegetation, although hares were recorded more frequently in firebreaks than in plantations or native vegetation. Presence of red deer and wild boar was positively associated with cover of pine plantations at the landscape scale, and negatively associated with mid‐storey cover and diversity at the stand scale. European hares preferred sites with low arboreal and mid‐storey cover. Our results suggest that pine plantations promote increased abundances of invasive species whose original distributions are associated with woodlands (red deer and wild boar), and could act as source or pathways for invasive species to new areas.  相似文献

Using a simple isotope mixing model, we evaluated the relative proportion of water vapour generated by plant transpiration and by soil evaporation at two sites in the Amazon basin. Sampling was carried out at two different soil covers (forest and pasture), in a seasonal tropical rainforest at eastern Amazon where major deforestation is the result of land-use change, and compared to a less seasonal central Amazon forest. In both forests, vapour from transpiration was responsible for most, if not all, of the water vapour generated in the forest, while it could not be detected above the grassy pastures. Thus the canopy transpiration may be a major source of water vapour to the forest and perhaps to the atmosphere during the dry season. The results are discussed in relation to predictive models based on net radiation that usually are not able to distinguish between transpiration and evaporation.  相似文献
