The fish communities of the rocky littoral zone of Lake Malawi contain a large number of ecologically similar cichlid species. It has been suggested that dietary niche segregation may play a role in the coexistence of these species, but previous studies have yielded ambiguous results. Stable isotope analysis was used to determine whether five sympatric species are segregated by diet. Significant differences were found between the mean isotopic signatures of the study species, but there was considerable interspecific overlap between three species from the same subgenus that were anatomically almost indistinguishable. The implication that this was due to substantial dietary similarity was supported by stomach content analysis. We propose that ecological segregation may not always be necessary to allow coexistence of Lake Malawi cichlids.  相似文献

Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to analyse the behaviour of a chromatographic separation as its scale increased. Three 4.6 mm diameter columns identical in every respect except for column length (25, 15 and 5 cm), were used to generate the data from a test system based on the reversed-phase HPLC separation of crude erythromycin on a polystyrene matrix (PLRP 1000) having a particle diameter of 8 mu;m and a pore diameter of 100 nm. The species were separated with an isocratic solvent composed of 45/55 acetonitrile/water at about pH 7. An experimental design technique was used to investigate the effects of four process variables (load volume, load concentration, temperature and pH of buffer) on the chromatogram shapes. Following appropriate pre-processing of the chromatographic data, subsets of critical chromatograms were selected which sufficiently characterised the entire data set. From this subset, the corresponding runs were performed on the different sized columns and principal component models were generated for each. At 5 and 15 cm a single principal component was sufficient to characterise all the variance in the chromatograms which the range of process variables introduced, but at 25 cm two principal components were required, particularly to characterise the chromatograms with small loads. Excellent correlations were observed between the first principal components at the three scales. The possibility of predicting the separations on the 25 cm column from an analysis of the separations observed at 5 cm was investigated. The study revealed that good predictions could be made at high loads (>92%) , but the model was not effective at low loads because of the need to incorporate a second principal component which was not defined by the range of variables applied to the 5 cm column.  相似文献

The decrease in cancellous bone formation after estrogen treatment is generally thought to be coupled with a prior decrease in bone resorption. To test the possibility that estrogen has rapid tissue-specific actions on bone metabolism, we determined the time course (1-32 h) effects of diethylstilbestrol on steady-state mRNA levels for immediate-response genes, extracellular matrix proteins, and signaling peptides in the proximal tibial metaphysis and uterus by using Northern blot and RNase protection assays. The regulation of signaling peptides by estrogen, although tissue specific, followed a similar time course in bone and uterus. The observed rapid decreases in expression of insulin-like growth factor I, a growth factor associated with bone formation; decreases in mRNA levels for bone matrix proteins; evidence for reduced bone matrix synthesis; failure to detect rapid increases in mRNA levels for signaling peptides implicated in mediating the inhibitory effects of estrogen on bone resorption (interleukin-1 and -6) as well as other cytokines that can increase bone resorption; and the comparatively long duration of the bone remodeling cycle in rats indicate that estrogen can decrease bone formation by a mechanism that does not require a prior reduction in bone resorption.  相似文献

Airway wall remodeling in response to inflammation might alter load on airway smooth muscle and/or change airway wall stability. We therefore determined airway wall compliance and closing pressures in an animal model. Weanling pigs were sensitized to ovalbumin (OVA; ip and sc, n = 6) and were subsequently challenged three times with OVA aerosol. Control pigs received 0.9% NaCl (n = 4) in place of OVA aerosol. Bronchoconstriction in vivo was assessed from lung resistance and dynamic compliance. Semistatic airway compliance was recorded ex vivo in isolated segments of bronchus, after the final OVA aerosol or 0.9% NaCl challenge. Internally or externally applied pressure needed to close bronchial segments was determined in the absence or presence of carbachol (1 microM). Sensitized pig lungs exhibited immediate bronchoconstriction to OVA aerosol and also peribronchial accumulations of monocytes and granulocytes. Compliance was reduced in sensitized bronchi in vitro (P < 0.01), and closing pressures were increased (P < 0.05). In the presence of carbachol, closing pressures of control and sensitized bronchi were not different. We conclude that sensitization and/or inflammation increases airway load and airway stability.  相似文献

Classical mimicry theory distinguishes clearly between the mutualistic resemblance between two or more defended species (muellerian mimicry), and the parasitic resemblance of a palatable species to a defended species (batesian mimicry). Modelling the behaviour of predators, without initially taking ecological complications into account, is a good strategy for exploring whether this division is valid. Two such behavioural models are described: conditioning theory, which simulates changes in motivational attack levels according to the norms of current learning theory; and saturation theory, which considers how a predator may become saturated with a particular toxic compound, and then cease feeding on the prey species that delivers it. This effect is to be clearly distinguished from simple satiation. Most formulations of the conditioning model allow the direction of reinforcement produced by a particular prey to change according the predator's current state of motivation: this leads to the existence of quasi-batesian mimicry, a parasitic mimicry between two species that could both be described as defended. At high densities, two prey species that share a chemical defense will be ‘muellerian mutualists’, mutually protecting each other against predators that have been saturated with the defensive compound. This mutualism may be accompanied by true muellerian mimicry of the colour patterns, or the patterns may be completely different. This can therefore be regarded as a form of mimicry in a non-visual communication channel. Even an apparently palatable prey species may be effectively unavailable to predators if its density is such as to deliver a particular nutrient in excess of the predator's need for a balanced diet. Such a nutrient in effect becomes a toxin, and such an abundant prey species would be partly defended and potentially able to act as the model in a mimicry system. Thus there might be protective mimicry between ‘palatable’ species, and a ‘palatable’ species might even function as the model for a ‘defended’ mimic. These unorthodox kinds of mimicry probably exist transiently during fluctuations of prey populations. It is less likely that these conditions persist for long enough to induce the evolution of mimicry, and the relationships perhaps usually occur when mimicry already exists for other reasons. Mimicry rings may be mutually stabilised by a combination of toxic mutualism and the exchange of species between the rings. Colour polymorphism in a defended species is strictly neutral whenever the population is dense enough to saturate the predator. This, as well as quasi-batesian mimicry, may help to explain the minority of warningly coloured species that are polymorphic. Light, fluorescence and electron microscopical analysis of therooted freshwater plantRanunculus trichophyllusrevealed a peculiaranatomical feature. In addition to the true endodermis encirclingthe root stele, endodermis-like sheaths occurred around eachvascular bundle of the leaf segments and of the eustelic stemwith its large central cavity, which assumed an anatomical featureresembling that of some pteridophyte stems. These impermeablesheaths, whose cells differentiate suberized walls, can playa major role in hampering the apoplastic leakage of the pressurizedwater solution which flows throughout the plant in xylem vesselsand contains the mineral nutrients taken up by the roots fromthe sediment. Moreover, these sheaths can function in preventingflooding of the aerenchymatic cavities of the submerged organs.In this way the endodermis-like sheaths preserve the correctcirculation of gas and nutrient solution through the entireorganism and assume great significance as a structural mechanismevolved by this species to survive and grow underwater.Copyright1999 Annals of Botany Company. Using specific polyclonal antisera raised against acetylated isoforms of histone H4, we have analyzed their distribution in the dioecious plant Silene latifolia (syn. Melandrium album) possessing heteromorphic sex chromosomes. Our previous studies on this species have shown that one of the two X chromosomes in homogametic female cells is heavily methylated and late replicating, as a possible consequence of dosage compensation. Here we report that there are no detectable differences in intensity and distribution of H4 acetylation between these two X chromosomes. In S. latifolia only distal-subtelomeric chromosome regions, on both the sex chromosomes and autosomes, display strong signals of H4 acetylation at N-terminal lysines 5, 8, and 12. These acetylated domains correspond to the very early replicating distal chromosome regions as revealed by 5-bromodeoxyuridine pulses followed by the indirect immunofluorescence microscopy. The distribution of H4 acetylated at lysine 16 was uniform along the chromosomes. The unique distal-subtelomeric H4 acetylation signals were also observed in three other Silene species (S. vulgaris, S. pendula, and S. chalcedonica), but not in two non-related plant species tested (Allium cepa and Nicotiana tobacum). The presented data as well as our recent studies on the structure of S. latifolia chromosome ends indicate that Silene species possess the specific distal-subtelomeric location of euchromatin, gene-rich regions on chromosomes.  相似文献

An improved dynamic programming algorithm is reported for RNA secondary structure prediction by free energy minimization. Thermodynamic parameters for the stabilities of secondary structure motifs are revised to include expanded sequence dependence as revealed by recent experiments. Additional algorithmic improvements include reduced search time and storage for multibranch loop free energies and improved imposition of folding constraints. An extended database of 151,503 nt in 955 structures? determined by comparative sequence analysis was assembled to allow optimization of parameters not based on experiments and to test the accuracy of the algorithm. On average, the predicted lowest free energy structure contains 73 % of known base-pairs when domains of fewer than 700 nt are folded; this compares with 64 % accuracy for previous versions of the algorithm and parameters. For a given sequence, a set of 750 generated structures contains one structure that, on average, has 86 % of known base-pairs. Experimental constraints, derived from enzymatic and flavin mononucleotide cleavage, improve the accuracy of structure predictions.  相似文献

Background and AimsIn hierarchically reticulate venation patterns, smaller orders of veins form areoles in which stomata are located. This study aimed to quantify the spatial relationship among stomata at the areole level.MethodsFor each of 12 leaves of M. cavaleriei var. platypetala, we assumed that stomatal characteristics were symmetrical on either side of the midrib, and divided the leaf surface on one side of the midrib into six layers equidistantly spaced along the apical–basal axis. We then further divided each layer into three positions equidistantly spaced from midrib to leaf margin, resulting in a total of 18 sampling locations. In addition, for 60 leaves, we sampled three positions from midrib to margin within only the widest layer of the leaf. Stomatal density and mean nearest neighbour distance (MNND) were calculated for each section. A replicated spatial point pattern approach quantified stomatal spatial relationships at different distances (0–300 μm).Key ResultsA tendency towards regular arrangement (inhibition as opposed to attraction or clustering) was observed between stomatal centres at distances <100 μm. Leaf layer (leaf length dimension) had no significant effect on local stomatal density, MNND or the spatial distribution characteristics of stomatal centres. In addition, we did not find greater inhibition at the centre of areoles, and in positions farther from the midrib.ConclusionsSpatial inhibition might be caused by the one-cell-spacing rule, resulting in more regular arrangement of stomata, and it was found to exist at distances up to ~100 μm. This work implies that leaf hydraulic architecture, consisting of both vascular and mesophyll properties, is sufficient to prevent important spatial variability in water supply at the areole level.  相似文献
