The main purpose with this study was to assess the seasonal variation in measured UV-radiation and its impact on vitamin D status throughout one year in subjects living at high latitude. Blood samples drawn from 60 volunteers (44 women, 16 men) living at Andenes (69 degrees N), Norway, were collected throughout one year, at two-month intervals. The blood samples were analysed for 25-hydroxy vitamin D [25(OH)D]. Data on dietary intakes of vitamin D, time spent in daylight, use of sun beds and sun seeking holidays were collected by using questionnaires. The ambient vitamin D effective UV-radiation was measured at a site near by Andenes, and the number of hours spent outdoors with sufficient radiation for cutaneous vitamin D production (UV-hours) was estimated for each day. The mean 25(OH)D values were significantly higher at the end of the summer and in December, 2004 and varied from 42.0 nmol L(-1) in October, 2004 and April, 2005 to around 47 nmol L(-1) in December, 2004 and September, 2005. For the whole group, a positive relationship between UV-hours and 25(OH)D was found at UV-hours>or=3.5. However, for subjects with lower 25(OH)D levels i.e. at least one blood measurement with 25(OH)D<37.5 nmol L(-1), the positive relationship were found at around 1.5 UV-hours and more, whereas for the group of subjects that had all their vitamin D values above 37.5 nmol L(-1), positive relationship was found at UV-hours>or=4.0, when adjusting for vitamin D intake, sun bed use and sun seeking holidays. The generally high dietary intakes of vitamin D, especially in winter, mask largely the effect of seasonal variation in UV-exposure, causing an atypical seasonal variation in vitamin D status. The UV-hour variable significantly predicted 25(OH)D levels in blood when adjusted for intakes and artificial UV-radiation exposure and sun holidays abroad.  相似文献

Pain is a cardinal symptom in musculoskeletal diseases involving the knee joint, and aberrant movement patterns and motor control strategies are often present in these patients. However, the underlying neuromuscular mechanisms linking pain to movement and motor control are unclear. To investigate the functional significance of muscle pain on knee joint control during walking, three-dimensional gait analyses were performed before, during, and after experimentally induced muscle pain by means of intramuscular injections of hypertonic saline (5.8%) into vastus medialis (VM) muscle of 20 healthy subjects. Isotonic saline (0.9%) was used as control. Surface electromyography (EMG) recordings of VM, vastus lateralis (VL), biceps femoris, and semitendinosus muscles were synchronized with the gait analyses. During experimental muscle pain, the loading response phase peak knee extensor moments were attenuated, and EMG activity in the VM and VL muscles was reduced. Compressive forces, adduction moments, knee joint kinematics, and hamstring EMG activity were unaffected by pain. Interestingly, the observed changes persisted when the pain had vanished. The results demonstrate that muscle pain modulated the function of the quadriceps muscle, resulting in impaired knee joint control and joint instability during walking. The changes are similar to those observed in patients with knee pain. The loss of joint control during and after pain may leave the knee joint prone to injury and potentially participate in the chronicity of musculoskeletal problems, and it may have clinically important implications for rehabilitation and training of patients with knee pain of musculoskeletal origin.  相似文献

Birds show considerable variation in sperm morphology. Closely related species and subspecies can show diagnostic differences in sperm size. There is also variation in sperm size among males within a population, and recent evidence from passerine birds suggests that the coefficient of inter‐male variation in sperm length is negatively associated with the level of sperm competition. Here we examined patterns of inter‐ and intra‐specific variation in sperm length in 12 species of sunbird (Nectariniidae) from Nigeria and Cameroon, a group for which such information is extremely limited. We found significant variation among species in sperm total length, with mean values ranging from 74 μm to 116 μm, placing these species within the short to medium sperm length range for passerine birds. Most of this variation was explained by the length of the midpiece, which contains the fused mitochondria and is an important structure for sperm energetics. Relative midpiece length was negatively correlated with the coefficient of inter‐male variation in sperm total length across species, suggesting that sperm competition may have selected for greater midpiece length in this group. We also mapped sperm lengths onto a time‐calibrated phylogeny and found support for a phylogenetic signal in all sperm length components, except head length. A test of various evolutionary or tree transformation models gave strongest support for the Brownian motion model for all sperm components, i.e. divergences were best predicted by the phylogenetic distance between lineages. The coefficients of inter‐male variation in sperm total length indicate that sperm competition is high but variable among sunbird species, as is the case with passerine birds at large.  相似文献

The effect of sorbic acid in the pH range 4.9 to 7.0 on the probability P of growth of a single vegetative bacterium of proteolytic strains of Clostridium botulinum has been determined by comparison of the most probable number count of the bacteria in media at pH 4.9 to 7.0 containing a series of concentrations of potassium sorbate and in a nutrient medium at pH 6.8 to 7.0. The media were maintained under strictly anaerobic conditions at a redox potential equivalent to lower than -350 mV at pH 7. In medium adjusted to the required pH with HCl, P for strain ZK3 (type A) at pH 5.1 or 5.5 after 2 days at 30 degrees C was similar to that at pH 6.8 to 7.0 but was slightly lower at pH 4.9. Potassium sorbate inhibited growth, the inhibition being a function of the concentration of undissociated sorbic acid. A calculated undissociated sorbic acid concentration of 156 mg/liter delayed growth of strain ZK3 (type A) but did not result in a significant decrease in P after an incubation time of 14 days. Higher concentrations of undissociated sorbic acid caused longer delays before maximum most probable number counts developed, and a calculated undissociated sorbic acid concentration of 282 mg/liter decreased log P for strain ZK3 after an incubation time of 14 days by a factor of 5.5 to 7.5. In the present revision 7 species are recognized: P. albiflora, P. apiculata, P. demissa, P. distelidia sp. nov., P. tricallosa, P. uniflora and P. yunnanensis. Somatomedin-C or insulin-like growth factor I (Sm-C/IGF-I) and insulin-like growth factor II (IGF-II) have been implicated in the regulation of fetal growth and development. In the present study 32P-labeled complementary DNA probes encoding human and mouse Sm-C/IGF-I and human IGF-II were used in Northern blot hybridizations to analyse rat Sm-C/IGF-I and IGF-II mRNAs in poly(A+) RNAs from intestine, liver, lung, and brain of adult rats and fetal rats between day 14 and 17 of gestation. In fetal rats, all four tissues contained a major mRNA of 1.7 kilobases (kb) that hybridized with the human Sm-C/IGF-I cDNA and mRNAs of 7.5, 4.7, 1.7, and 1.2 kb that hybridized with the mouse Sm-C/IGF-I cDNA. Adult rat intestine, liver, and lung also contained these mRNAs but Sm-C/IGF-I mRNAs were not detected in adult rat brain. These findings provide direct support for prior observations that multiple tissues in the fetus synthesize immunoreactive Sm-C/IGF-I and imply a role for Sm-C/IGF-I in fetal development as well as postnatally. The abundance of a 7.5-kb Sm-C/IGF-I mRNA in poly(A+) RNAs from adult rat liver was 10-50-fold higher than in other adult rat tissues which provides further evidence that in the adult rat the liver is a major site of Sm-C/IGF-I synthesis and source of circulating Sm-C/IGF-I. Multiple IGF-II mRNAs of estimated sizes 4.7, 3.9, 2.2, 1.75, and 1.2 kb were observed in fetal rat intestine, liver, lung, and brain. The 4.7- and 3.9-kb mRNAs were the major hybridizing IGF-II mRNAs in all fetal tissues. Higher abundance of IGF-II mRNAs in rat fetal tissues compared with adult tissues supports prior hypotheses, based on serum IGF-II concentrations, that IGF-II is predominantly a fetal somatomedin. IGF-II mRNAs are present, however, in some poly(A+) RNAs from adult rat tissues. The brain was the only tissue in the adult rat where the 4.7- and 3.9-kb IGF-II mRNAs were consistently detected. Some samples of adult rat intestine contained the 4.7- and 3.9-kb IGF-II mRNAs and some samples of adult liver and lung contained the 4.7-kb mRNA. These findings suggest that a role for IGF-II in the adult rat, particularly in the central nervous system, cannot be excluded.  相似文献

Recently, a putative hormone, glucagon-like peptide I (GLP I), has been identified in the predicted sequences of the precursors to pancreatic glucagon in human, rat, hamster, and ox. The distribution of GLP I immunoreactivity in canine and feline pancreas and gastrointestinal tract was examined immunohistochemically and was compared with that of two other antigenic determinants of pancreatic pro-glucagon, i.e., glucagon and the NH2 terminus of glicentin. All three determinants occurred in the same population of islet cells in normal pancreas and in pancreas consisting predominantly of islet tissue from dogs with canine pancreatic acinar atrophy. Northern blot analysis of mRNA from the latter tissue, using a rat pre-pro-glucagon complementary DNA probe, revealed a single mRNA species similar in size to the pre-pro-glucagon mRNA detected in fetal rat pancreas. The three antigenic determinants of pancreatic pro-glucagon were co-localized also in intestinal L-cells and in canine gastric A-cells. Canine and feline pancreatic pro-glucagons therefore resemble those identified in other mammals and may also occur in gastrointestinal endocrine cells. Although there is evidence that the GLP I sequence is not liberated from pancreatic pro-glucagon, our results raise the possibility that this putative hormone may be a cleavage product of pro-glucagon in the gastrointestinal tract.  相似文献

During mastication, reflexes are modulated and sensory transmission is altered in interneurons and ascending pathways of the rostral trigeminal sensory complex. The current experiment examines the modulation of sensory transmission through the most caudal part of the trigeminal sensory system, the medullary dorsal horn, during fictive mastication produced by cortical stimulation. Extracellular single unit activity was recorded from the medullary dorsal horn, and multiple unit activity was recorded from the trigeminal motor nucleus in anesthetized, paralyzed rabbits. The masticatory area of sensorimotor cortex was stimulated to produce rhythmic activity in the trigeminal motor nucleus (fictive mastication). Activity in the dorsal horn was compared in the presence and absence of cortical stimulation. Fifty-two percent of neurons classified as low threshold and 83% of neurons receiving noxious inputs were influenced by cortical stimulation. The cortical effects were mainly inhibitory, but 21% of wide dynamic range and 6% of low threshold cells were excited by cortical stimulation. The modulation produced by cortical stimulation, whether inhibitory or excitatory, was not phasically related to the masticatory cycle. It is likely that, when masticatory movements are commanded by the sensorimotor cortex, the program includes tonic changes in sensory transmission through the medullary dorsal horn.  相似文献

In hepatocytes, urea synthesis from glutamine is independent of added ornithine, even when rates are high after stimulation of glutamine metabolism by dibutyryl cyclic AMP, phenylephrine or vasopressin. Incubation with glutamine increases tissue [ornithine]. The increases parallel those of [N-acetylglutamate] under different conditions. The ornithine requirement of urea synthesis increases with increasing supply of ammonia. A function of the unique, highly regulated, glutaminase of liver may be to regulate ornithine synthesis.  相似文献

A process that claims to use a double pasteurization to produce vacuum-packed potatoes for storage at ambient temperature has been evaluated. After the first pasteurization, potatoes are vacuum-packed and stored at 25 degrees-35 degrees C for up to 24 h, which is intended to allow germination of bacterial spores, and are then pasteurized again. When potatoes were inoculated with spores of Clostridium botulinum and subjected to this double-pasteurization process a high proportion of spores remained viable and resulted in growth and formation of toxin within 5-9 d at 25 degrees C. To provide an appropriate reduction in the risk o survival and growth of Cl. botulinum, peeled, vacuum-packed potatoes for storage at ambient temperature should be given a heat treatment equivalent to an F(0)3 process. If they are not given such a heat treatment they should be stored at a temperature below 4 degrees C.  相似文献
