Streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic animals are vulnerable to cold stress. Uncoupling proteins (UCPs) play an important role in regulating thermogenesis. We investigated the gene expressions of UCPs in brown adipose tissue (BAT), white adipose tissue (WAT), liver and gastrocnemius muscle of STZ-diabetic rats using Northern blot. UCP-1, -2 and -3 mRNA expressions in BAT were all remarkably lower in STZ-diabetic rats than those in control rats. Both UCP-2 and -3 gene expressions in gastrocnemius muscle were substantially elevated in STZ-diabetic rats and insulin treatment restored UCP gene expressions to normal levels. These results suggest that in STZ-diabetic rats, the overexpression of UCP-2 and UCP-3 in skeletal muscle provides a defense against hypothermogenesis caused by decreased UCPs in BAT. 相似文献

Mechanisms of oxidation of 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (dopa) in leaves ofVicia faba have not yet been elucidated in details. The author hypothesized its oxidation by radicals of hydroxycinnamic acid esters
that were generated by a peroxidase-dependent reaction in vacuoles. The results obtained in this study were followings. 1)
Vacuolar peroxidase isolated from the leaves oxidized dopa more slowly than 4-coumaric and caffeic acid esters isolated from
the leaves. 2) The hydroxycinnamic acid esters enhanced peroxidase-dependent oxidation of dopa and dopa suppressed their oxidation.
3) Degree of the enhancement was roughly correlated with rates of the oxidation of hydroxycinnamic acid esters. 4) The hydroxycinnamic
acid esters increased levels of dopa radical in the presence of peroxidase. 5) In protoplasts of mesophyll cells ofV. faba, hydrogen peroxide-induced oxidation of dopa was faster than that of 4-coumaric acid and caffeic acid esters. These results
support the above hypothesis that dopa in vacuoles is oxidized by phenoxyl radicals of hydroxycinnamic acid esters that are

We investigated seasonal changes in the number and feeding activity of Shovelers wintering in Lake Teganuma in connection with temporal and horizontal fluctuations of zooplankton, and analyzed esophageal contents of a captured Shoveler. Zooplankton community was dominated by rotifers followed by copepods during the study period. Horizontal distribution of both invertebrate taxa differed; rotifers most abundant in the western and eastern parts of the lake in February–March, and cyclopoid copepodids and nauplii more common in the northeast area of the eastern portion of the lake. The number and feeding activity of Shovelers increased from January to March in the northeast area of Lake Teganuma. A Shoveler captured in the area had mostly consumed cyclopoid copepodids despite the fact that rotifers dominated in the zooplankton community at that location. These results suggest that the horizontal distribution and feeding activity of the Shovelers were correlated with the distribution of the cyclopoid copepodids. 相似文献

Male crickets, Gryllus bimaculatus Degeer, turned lights on or off in a chamber by a seesaw device: (1) during a 12 h, and (2) during a 24 h day. The crickets in (1) and the last-instar nymph in (2) turned the lights on and off at irregular intervals and duration. The selection rate for darkness was greater than that for light by an average exceeding 80%. The locomotor activity of the nymph in (1) was arrhythmic. In (1) the adults stridulated and were active in continuous darkness during the 12 h, while, in contrast in (2) they turned on the light and stridulated without switching the light off. The locomotor and stridulatory activities of the adult crickets in (2) were free-running. These activities resulted in a free-running rhythm of selection for light or darkness in (2). Under the conditions of the present experiments, the circadian pacemaker functioned in the same way in light and dark cycles as in constant light conditions. 相似文献

Four species of cyclomorphic Daphnia (D.pulex, D.galeata mendotae,D.retrocurva, D.lumholtzi) were exposed to the insecticide carbarylfor a short term (84 h) from the final embryonic stageto the first instar. Daphnia pulex formed neckteeth, and theremaining three Daphnia species developed high helmets and longtailspines. The results suggest that the development of suchprotuberant structures (anti-predator morphologies) in responseto the insecticide exposure is a general phenomenon in Daphnia,and that stimuli on the nervous system of Daphnia may inducethe morphological changes, which originally evolved as a responseto predator kairomone. Two clones of D.pulcx were examined anda clone which was more sensitive to the predator Chaobonts kairomonethan another developed more marked neckteeth in response tocarbaryl, suggesting that the sensitivity in morphological responseto the insecticide may be related to the sensitivity to thekairomone.

We developed a novel micropropagation method for garlic (Allium sativum L.) by the combination of initial shoot-tip culture, shoot multiplication and in vitro bulblet formation. Garlic shoot-tips were cultured on LS medium containing 1 M indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and 1 M 6-benzyladenine (BA) to regenerate proliferative shoots. These shoot-tips produced multiple shoots when transferred to modified LS medium containing 5 M 1-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) and 10 M BA, and cultured at 20°C under 12-h light conditions. Higher ratios of KNO3/NH4Cl in the media promoted multiple shoot formation, together with suppressing vitrification of these shoots. The proliferated shoots of early maturing cultivars produced bulblets by culture on LS growth regulator-free medium at 25°C under 16-h light. On the other hand, the late maturing cultivar, Howaito-roppen, formed bulblets after a low temperature treatment of the proliferated shoots for 6 months followed by culture on LS medium containing 6 to 12% sucrose for two months. The dormancy of the bulblets of cv. Howaito-roppen was broken by successive treatments at a high (35°C), a middle (20°C), and then a low (5°C) temperature.Abbreviations IAA

The mycofloral succession on the needles ofPinus sylvestris was investigated in Tübingen, southwest Germany. Dead needles attached to the branches (D-type), those caught on branches (C-type) and three types of fallen needles, i.e., freshly fallen (L-type), slightly discolored (OL-type) and almost black needles (F-type) were examined for their fungal flora. Common primary saprophytes were rich on the dead needles on the tree, and on the L-type needles. They were replaced by successive species that contained the well-known species preferring pine needles as their substratum, such asVerticicladium trifidum orSympodiella acicola. Buthiobate (S-n-butyl S'-p-tert-butylbenzyl N-3-pyridyldithiocarbon-imidate), a fungicide, inhibited 14 alpha-demethylation of lanosterol catalyzed by a reconstituted enzyme system consisting of cytochrome P-450 (P-450(14)-DM) and NADPH-cytochrome P-450 reductase both purified from Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Concentration of buthiobate necessary for the 50% inhibition was 0.3 microM and this value was markedly lower than those of metyrapone and SKF-525A. Buthiobate bound stoichiometrically to P-450(14)-DM and induced Type II spectral change of the cytochrome. Buthiobate inhibited lanosterol-dependent enzymatic reduction of the cytochrome. These facts indicate that buthiobate binds to P-450(14)-DM with high affinity and acts as a potent inhibitor on the cytochrome. 相似文献

The survival of CHO cells exposed to mitomycin C was decreased three times that of the cells treated with 1 mM dibutyryl cyclic AMP before mitomycin C treatment, as compared to the absence of treatment with this cyclic nucleotide. The sensitization effect began at 3-4 hours after the start of pre-treatment, reached a maximum at around 10 hours and continued to be effective. Post-treatment with the cyclic nucleotide for more than 12 hours increased the survival of CHO cells exposed to mitomycin C. 相似文献
