We investigated the temporal relationship between abdominal temperature, physical activity, perineal swelling, and urinary progesterone and estradiol concentrations over the menstrual cycle in unrestrained captive baboons. Using a miniature temperature‐sensitive data logger surgically implanted in the abdominal cavity and an activity data logger implanted subcutaneously on the trunk, we measured, continuously over 6 months at 10‐min intervals, abdominal temperature and physical activity patterns in four female adult baboons Papio hamadryas ursinus (12.9–19.9 kg), in cages in an indoor animal facility (22–25°C). We monitored menstrual bleeding and perineal swelling changes, and measured urinary progesterone and estradiol concentrations, daily for up to 6 months, to ascertain the stage and length of the menstrual cycle. The menstrual cycle was 36 ± 2 days (mean ± SD) long and the baboons exhibited cyclic changes in perineal swellings, abdominal temperature, physical activity, urinary progesterone, and estradiol concentrations over the cycle. Mean 24‐hr abdominal temperature during the luteal phase was significantly higher than during the periovulatory phase (ANOVA, F(2, 9) = 4.7; P = 0.04), but not different to that during the proliferative phase. Physical activity followed a similar pattern, with mean 24‐hr physical activity almost twice as high in the luteal than in the periovulatory phase (ANOVA, P = 0.58; F(2, 12) = 5.8). We have characterized correlates of the menstrual cycle in baboons and shown, for the first time, a rhythm of physical activity and abdominal temperature over the menstrual cycle, with a nadir of temperature and activity at ovulation. We address the generic limits of Gnidia (Thymelaeaceae) through a phylogenetic analysis of nuclear ribosomal DNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and plastid rbcL, trnL intron and trnL‐F intergenic spacer regions. Maximum parsimony and Bayesian inference were used to produce trees and assess internal support. The most significant conclusion drawn from the molecular analysis is that Gnidia is polyphyletic as currently circumscribed, comprising at least four distinct lineages that are each related to other genera within Thymelaeoideae. Gnidia pinifolia and G. racemosa are members of a clade within which Struthiola is embedded; a second group of species allies with Drapetes as sister to Passerina; and a third lineage corresponds to the previously recognized genus Lasiosiphon. The remaining species of Gnidia included in this study are allied with the Australian genus Pimelea. 1. Emergence traps were set overnight on the sediment surface to sample the littoral microcrustaceans of 22 Canadian Shield lakes that ranged in pH from 4.56 to 6.92. Traps were randomly allocated in quintuplicate in both wave‐washed sandy habitats where pipewort (Eriocaulon septangulare) was the dominant macrophyte (termed pipewort habitats), and more protected habitats dominated by floating‐leaved macrophytes (termed floating‐leaved habitats). 2. In total, 50 cladoceran and 22 copepod species were found, with 16–45 species in each lake. Lakes that had never acidified exhibited a more diverse fauna than lakes that had acidified. 3. There were only minor differences between the numbers of species found in floating‐leaved versus pipewort habitats except for one lake. Non‐chydorid cladoceran, chydorids and copepods constituted 45%, 26% and 29% of the total number of individuals, respectively. 4. Based on presence/absence, dominance scores and frequency of occurrences of species, the microcrustacean faunal composition was similar in the two habitats. A detrended correspondence analysis confirmed that there was no separation between the two main types of habitat, and that pH was the parameter most strongly correlated with the dominant microcrustacean compositional gradient among lakes.  相似文献

Effects of exogenous growth regulators are related to the histologicalevents in adventitious root initiation in hypocotyls of Pinusradiata D. Don. Indolebutyric acid (IBA) is required both forthe pre-initiative and post-initiative phases in root development.Kinetin has a marked inhibitory effect over the pre-initiativephase, with escape from inhibition following establishment ofmeristemoids. Gibberellic acid (GA3) has three distinct effectsdepending on time of application. While inhibitory during thepre-initiative phase, it strongly enhances rooting if appliedat a time coincident with the first observable stage of rootinitiation.
