Samples of Cepaea nemoralis (L.) taken from sand-dune, lowland and mountain populations show differences in body colour. Overall, sand-dune populations are much paler than those in the other two areas. On sand-dunes, darker and more variable populations are found in densely vegetated habitats; in the lowland, darker forms occur further inland but there is no correlation with vegetation; mountain populations are darker and less variable on north- than south-facing slopes. Overall differences between areas can be ascribed to climatic selection and differences in variation within areas to niche width.  相似文献

Colony growth form is of fundamental importance to understanding the ecology of both modern and ancient marine sessile colonial animals. Fourier shape analysis of the coral Pleurodictyun americantum (Tabulata: Favositida) from the Middle Devonian Hamilton Group of New York State, indicates that colony growth form is variable between environments. Discriminate function analysis of harmonics 2–6 of 51 assemblages of Pleurodictyum americanum (N = 1900) shows that this species displays an onshore to offshore gradient in colony shape. Offshore environments characterized by low levels of turbidity, oxygen, and light contain more flattened, less hemispherical growth forms, whereas onshore environments characterized by high levels of turbidity, oxygen, and light contain more hemispherical, less flattened growth forms. Harmonic shape analysis detected subtle differences among samples of P. americanum from different environments, but also showed that distinctive morphotypes are distributed within horizons. as well as between them. In fact, no one-to-one correspondence in growth form to environment is apparent; growth forms are distributed within environments, suggesting that genetic factors may have had a greater influence over coral growth form than environment. Nonproportional hazards can often be expressed by extendingthe Cox model to include time varying coefficients; e.g., fora single covariate, the hazard function for subject i is modelledas exp {β(t)Zi(t)}. A common example is a treatment effectthat decreases with time. We show that the function βi(t)can be directly visualized by smoothing an appropriate residualplot. Also, many tests of proportional hazards, including thoseof Cox (1972), Gill & Schumacher (1987), Harrell (1986),Lin (1991), Moreau, O'Quigley & Mesbah (1985), Nagelkerke,Oosting & Hart (1984), O'Quigley & Pessione (1989),Schoenfeld (1980) and Wei (1984) are related to time-weightedscore tests of the proportional hazards hypothesis, and canbe visualized as a weighted least-squares line fitted to theresidual plot.  相似文献

Stands of pearl millet were grown in glasshouses in which meanair temperature was controlled to 19, 22, 25, 28 and 31 ?C withan amplitude of ?5 ?C. During the main growth period, leaf areaindex increased at a constant rate which was proportional tomean temperature above a base of 10 ?C. The warmest stand, therefore,intercepted more radiation before anthesis but the transmissioncoefficient was independent of temperature (K 0.3). Based ondry weight at final harvest, the efficiency of conversion forintercepted radiation ranged from about 2.1–2.4 g MJ–1consistent with field experience. Combining this informationwith figures for the duration of growth in relation to temperaturesuggests that growth rate should be maximal at 25–27 ?Cand total dry weight at 20–22 ?C. Despite the many studies that have investigated the genetic mating system of socially monogamous birds, very little is known about the underlying causes of extra-pair paternity and few studies have attempted to test those hypotheses which have been suggested. This study describes die analysis of die genetic mating system of two populations of the house sparrow [Passer domesticus) , and uses the results from four other populations to test existing hypodieses using an intra-specific comparative approach. The parentage analysis was conducted using a combination of published and newly presented microsatellite loci isolated from the house sparrow. One population in Kentucky, U.S.A. was found to contain what may be considered to be a typical level of extra-pair paternity for mis species (10.5%, 19/185 offspring). The second, a population on the island of Lundy, UK, exhibited a very low level (1.3%, 4/305 offspring), significandy lower dian that in all the other populations studied so far. The finding of such diverse rates of extra-pair paternity, along with the existing estimates from ofher populations, has allowed us to test the effects of breeding density and genetic variation on die level of extra-pair paternity. We found no effect of either factor on the frequency of extra-pair paternity in the house sparrow, leaving the cause of this variation open to fresh ideas.  相似文献

We report the isolation of a set of hypervariable minisatellite DNA sequences from a blue tit Parus caeruleus genomic DNA library. In our strategy, we cloned a minisatellite-rich DNA fraction into a charomid vector. The resulting cosmid library was screened with the two minisatellite DNA probes 33.6 and 33.15 for recombinants containing a minisatellite DNA insert. A total of 233 positive clones were isolated. Of 37 clones that have been analysed, nine gave polymorphic signals and can be used as single locus probes (SLPs). Four of the SLPs were investigated in more detail. The number of alleles, the heterozygosity and the mutation rate were estimated. Linkage analysis revealed that two of these loci were linked. The SLPs are of value to studies of the mating system and reproductive success in the blue tit, and may also be useful in population genetic studies.  相似文献

Pathogenicity of Fusarium oxysporum to Easter lily, narcissus and gladiolus   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Isolates of Fusarium oxysporum from roots, bulbs and stems of Easter lilies (Lilium longiflorum) differed widely in pathogenicity and also, apparently, in tissue specificity. Virulent isolates caused a typical basal rot and root rot (but not a wilt) in which the mycelium advanced intercellularly through the scales and basal plates. Mildly pathogenic isolates became established in mature or senescent outer scales, at first producing only superficial effects, but further growth of mycelium occurred as the outer scales died and sometimes continued until the dead tissues were permeated and chlamydospores were formed. The underlying scales were then colonized. The modes of pathogenicity and survival in Easter lily were compared with those of the F. oxysporum formae causing bulb rots of gladiolus and narcissus. It is suggested that advance of hyphae by penetration between the cells of the vascular parenchyma, which is common in isolates causing rots in bulbs and corms, represents a stage in the evolution of the truly vascular habit among fusaria.  相似文献
