SUMMARY. At any given temperature level, the rate of oxygen poisoning increases proportionally with an increase in oxygen tension. But the toxicity of oxygen does not bear a proportional relationship to temperature. This article discusses a model to describe the effects of molecules that bind to a site on the receptor separate from that of the endogenous agonist to actively produce receptor signals (direct agonism). In addition, these molecules also modify the biological responses of the endogenous agonist (either potentiation or antagonism). Homoploid hybrid speciation has generally been viewed as a rare evolutionary phenomenon, with relatively few well-documented cases in nature. Here, we investigate the origin of Stephanomeria diegensis , a diploid flowering plant species that has been proposed to have arisen as a result of hybridization between S. exigua and S. virgata . Across the range of S. diegensis , all individuals share a common chloroplast haplotype with S. virgata while showing a greater affinity for S. exigua in terms of nuclear genetic diversity. A prinicipal coordinates analysis (PCO) based on the nuclear data revealed that S. diegensis is most similar to each parent along different axes. Moreover, a Bayesian clustering analysis as well as a hybrid index-based analysis showed evidence of mixed ancestry, with approximately two thirds of the S. diegensis nuclear genome derived from S. exigua . These results provide strong support for a homoploid hybrid origin of S. diegensis . Finally, contrary to the finding that homoploid hybrid species are typically multiply-derived, our results were most consistent with a single origin of this species.  相似文献

1. Environmental stressors have both lethal and sublethal effects, such as altered developmental rates and the induction of malformations. Ecological interactions, including predation and competition, often amplify such effects, for instance by inducing behavioural changes that increase susceptibility to the stress. 2. Using experimental mesocosms, we asked whether the density of conspecific competitors and predation risk from larval water beetles (Dytiscus spp.) affect the development of malformations in tadpoles of the wood frog (Rana sylvatica). We also examined whether such malformities increase the susceptibility of tadpoles to predation. 3. The risk of predation decreased the frequency of malformities in both low‐ and high‐density treatments, although this effect was greater at low density. Behavioural observations suggested that reductions in activity by amphibian larvae induced by predators mediated these responses by decreasing cumulative exposure to ultraviolet‐B radiation, the putative stressor causing the observed malformity. These results suggest that predators can reduce negative impacts of stressors by inducing behavioural changes in prey organisms. 4. Malformed individuals were twice as vulnerable to predators as non‐malformed individuals, suggesting that sublethal effects can ultimately cause increased mortality.  相似文献

Plants were grown at temperatures of 15 and 25 ?C with two ratesof nitrogen supply. The changes in dry weight, leaf area, cellnumber, mean cell volume, soluble carbohydrate, and total nitrogenconcentration of the cotyledons, the first and second pair oftrue leaves, and the storage root were measured. Changes incell number and cell volume of the first pair of true leavesand storage root of plants were also measured at 11, 18, 25,and 32 ?C. Leaf growth before unfolding was chiefly by increase in cellnumber and after unfolding by increase in mean cell volume,while the growth of the storage root was almost entirely byincrease in cell number. The rates of cell division and cellexpansion were fastest at 25 ?C, but the initially high ratesof cell division in the terminal bud and in individual leavesdecreased rapidly and greater rates were maintained at the sub-optimaltemperatures, i.e. 15 and 18 ?C. After an initial period ofslow growth, the first-formed leaves grew faster and becamelarger at 15 than at 25 ?C. Leaves were produced, unfolded,grew faster, and became larger with increase in the externalconcentration of nitrogen, because cells divided and expandedfaster, so that nitrogen increased the number and size of cells. Sugar concentration was greater at 15 than at 25 ?C in leavesbut not in the storage root. Sugar concentration in the petiolesof the first and second pair of true leaves increased to 1.2and 2.0 per cent fresh weight respectively. Decreased nitrogensupply temporarily increased the sugar concentration of cotyledonpetioles and the seedling hypocotyl, but later decreased itin the leaves and storage root. Nitrogen concentration was greaterin the leaves and storage root at 15 than at 25 ?C with thelarger nitrogen supply. Nitrogen concentrations were similarin young leaves of all treatments but as the size of leavesincreased nitrogen concentrations decreased most rapidly at25 ?C with the smaller nitrogen supply. It is suggested that when increased leaf production and storage-rootgrowth occurs at temperatures below the growth optimum (25 ?C),they may be due to an effect of increased carbohydrate supplyon cell division and sugar storage.  相似文献

Social, environmental, and perceptual factors have been suggested to account for the evolution of visual signal diversity in lizards. Previous investigations have inferred that signal complexity may also be related to body size. In this study, we use three complementary comparative analyses to investigate whether body size has influenced macro-evolutionary trends in display modifier repertoire size for 110 species of iguanian lizards. We found evidence that signal complexity, as measured by repertoire size, is negatively associated with body size. However, this relationship was not strictly linear. Rather, body size seems to impose a threshold on signal evolution. Specifically, the evolution of large repertoire size appears to be less likely above a particular size threshold, which results in large-bodied lizards having a significantly lower probability of evolving elaborate displays. This relationship may reflect the influence of body size on resource use and the emergent social dynamics it promotes. Large lizards tend to be herbivorous and typically do not defend foraging patches. Consistent with this hypothesis is the previously reported finding of a similar size threshold dividing herbivorous from insectivorous lizards.
