Transitional cell carcinoma of the ovary: A rare case and review of literature

Goblet cell carcinoid of the large intestine is a rare neoplasm, usually located in ascending colon and rectum. A 60-year-old male patient underwent surgery after the diagnosis of acute abdomen. Exploratory laparotomy revealed perforation with a diameter of 1 cm at the site of the previously performed gastroenterostomy and dilatation of the right colic flexure, secondary to a solid obstructive mass located in the mid-portion of transverse colon. Histopathological investigation of the biopsies, taken from the gastroenterostomy site and the tumor, revealed mixed carcinoid-adenocarcinoma with carcinoid component, predominantly composed of goblet cells. Three cycles of FOLFOX-4 protocol was administered. Following respiratory distress secondary to pulmonary metastasis, the patient's condition deteriorated and subsequently died in the fourth postoperative month. Our aim with this paper is to point out that more cases should be reported for more effective diagnosis, histopathological study, clinical investigation, treatment and prognosis of this specific neoplasm.     

Prospective cohort studies on risk factors for cardiovascular events in systemic lupus erythematosus: a major challenge

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) has been identified as a major contributor to morbidity and mortality in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The etiology of premature CVD in SLE is supposed to have many factors, including traditional coronary artery disease (CAD) risk factors, antiphospholipid antibodies, and metabolic and inflammatory factors. Despite the overwhelming interest in CVD in SLE research, prospective studies evaluating risk factors for hard endpoints (that is, cardiovascular events) are relatively scarce. The article by Gustafsson and colleagues suggests that prothrombotic factors play an important role in SLE-related CVD and that the influence of traditional CAD risk factors might be limited.     

Mitochondrial DNA polymorphism in the natural populations of the Drosophila virilis species group

Restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis has been used to evaluate mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) variation in 12 sibling species forming the Drosophila virilis species group. The variation thresholds corresponding to the interspecific and interstrain levels have been determined. The results indicate that interspecific hybridization has significantly contributed to the evolutionary history of the virilis species group.     

Small doses of X-ray irradiation activate the NO-synthase component of the nitric oxide cycle

It has been shown that chronic X-ray irradiation, (CRI), activates the formation of NO in rats. This is apparent in the increase in the level of NO2- in the blood plasma from 12.59 +/- 1.7 to 39.79 +/- 2.9 nmol/ml after 10 days of irradiation. On the 20 and 30 day of CRI, the level of NO2(-)- was 21.05 +/- 1.2 and 30.73 +/- 1.9 nmol/ml respectively. The changes in the NO-synthase component of the NO cycle were accompanied by a decrease in the osmotic resistance of the erythrocytes and the nitritreductase activity of hemoglobin.     

Chaotic nonlinear dynamics of prestimulus EEG and the structure of auditory evoked potentials

The dynamic pattern of a prestimulus EEG was studied by the fractal analysis technique. The character of this pattern was shown to affect the structure of cortical auditory evoked potentials (EP). A monoperiodic pattern in the control frequency band was accompanied by a formation of several new attractors with low dimensionality attributed to simultaneous functioning of several weakly connected dynamic systems with an indefinite trend of a leading process. During development of multiperiodic processes in EEG segments, the fractal analysis revealed a tendency for a formation of a single complex dynamic system with high dimensionality of the attractor. Characteristic changes in parameters of the primary and middle-latency EP components, their correlation, and factor models are related with the character of nonlinear patterns. Analysis of variance revealed the most effective role of pattern changes in the EEG alpha control band. The structure of combination of parameters of the EP primary components into connected complexes depends on the nonlinear prestimulus EEG patterns. The above predictors determine differently directed and differently pronounced changes in parameters of the middle-latency positive waves.     

Polygalacturonase inhibiting protein in plant cell walls

Polygalacturonase inhibiting protein (PGIP) is localized in plant cell walls and plays an important role both in pectic substance metabolism and in prevention of the penetration of phytopathogenic microorganisms. Apparently, PGIP is responsible for the specificity of cell--cell interactions during pollination or inoculation by fungi nonpathogenic for the particular plant. PGIPs from different plants share a basic common structure. They are rather thermostable glycoproteins enriched with leucine and contain about 20% carbohydrates; the molecular weight varies between 37-54 kD. The synthesis of PGIP is encoded by one gene, and its expression is stimulated by injury and fungal infection. The resistance of plant tissues to infection frequently correlates with PGIP expression and with inhibiting action on fungal PG. Thus, PGIP is believed to be useful for gene engineering to obtain transgenic plants resistant to fungal infection or retaining commercial value during storage.     

Ultrasound-induced changes in synaptic processes with different transmitters in smooth muscles

The effect of therapeutic-intensity ultrasound on neuromuscular transmission and spontaneous electrical and contractile activity in smooth muscles of the gastrointestinal tract of guinea pig was studied by a modified sucrose-gap technique. The action of ultrasound was found to facilitate the acetylcholinergic neuromuscular transmission (mainly by increasing the amplitude of excitatory postsynaptic potentials). The higher efficiency of the nonadrenergic neuromuscular transmission was manifested as an increase (nearly twofold) in the total duration, but not in the amplitude, of inhibitory postsynaptic potentials. Modulations of the first and second components of the potentials caused respectively by the action of ATP and of nitric oxide as possible transmitters, were different. Concurrently with enhancing the synaptic transmission efficiency, ultrasound exerted an opposite, inhibitory, effect on generation of spontaneous action potentials and contraction of smooth muscles. All the ultrasound effects were fully reversible. The findings permit assuming a special mechanism of modification of the synaptic transmission in smooth muscles under the action of ultrasound.Neirofiziologiya/Neurophysiology, Vol. 25, No. 4, pp. 297–302, July–August, 1993.     

Phospholipid composition of mitochondria and microsomes from some transplantable rat tumors

The phospholipid compositions of mitochondria and microsomes from rat liver, kidney, nephroma RA and sarcoma 45 were investigated. The "lipid dedifferentiation" of hepatoma membranes found earlier was shown to extend also to other tumours. However, this phenomenon may concern some, but not all phospholipids.
