Mites and ticks are susceptible to pathogenic fungi, and there are opportunities to exploit these micro-organisms for biological control. We have collated records of 58 species of fungi infecting at least 73 species of Acari, either naturally or in experiments. Fungal pathogens have been reported to kill representatives of all three orders of the Actinotrichida (the Astigmata, Oribatida and Prostigmata) and the Ixodida and Mesostigmata in the Anactinotrichida. Most reports concern infections in the Prostigmata, particularly in the families Tetranychidae and Eriophyidae. Two species of Acari-specific pathogens - Hirsutella thompsonii and Neozygites floridana - are important natural regulators of pestiferous eriophyoid and tetranychid mites respectively. Research has been done to understand the factors leading to epizootics of these fungi and to conserve and enhance natural pest control. Hirsutella thompsonii was also developed as the commercial product Mycar for the control of eriophyoid mites on citrus, but was withdrawn from sale in the 1980s, despite some promising effects in the field. Beauveria bassiana , Metarhizium anisopliae, Paecilomyces farinosus, Paecilomyces fumosoroseus and Verticillium lecanii infect ixodid ticks in nature, and B. bassiana and M. anisopliae are being studied as biological control agents of cattle ticks in Africa and South America. Beauveria bassiana also has potential as a mycopesticide of the two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae . There is scope to develop fungal biocontrol agents against a range of acarine pests, both as stand-alone treatments and for use in integrated pest management. Further research is required to clarify the taxonomic status of fungal pathogens of Acari, to study their ecosystem function, and to develop efficient mass production systems for species of Hirsutella and Neozygites . 相似文献

Squid populations are being put under rapidly increasing commercial fishing pressure worldwide. The same species are known to be susceptible to extreme population fluctuations, so detailed knowledge of population substructuring and genetic diversity is essential for rational management. We present a set of microsatellite DNA loci suitable for population genetic analysis of Loligo gahi, the squid species subject to the most detailed monitoring and fishery control (around the Falkland Islands), with the future aim of generating management‐related information to aid conservation of this valuable natural resource. 相似文献

Given the relationship between sleep and plasticity, we examined the role of Extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) in regulating baseline sleep, and modulating the response to waking experience. Both sleep deprivation and social enrichment increase ERK phosphorylation in wild-type flies. The effects of both sleep deprivation and social enrichment on structural plasticity in the LNvs can be recapitulated by expressing an active version of ERK (UAS-ERK
SEM) pan-neuronally in the adult fly using GeneSwitch (Gsw) Gsw-elav-GAL4. Conversely, disrupting ERK reduces sleep and prevents both the behavioral and structural plasticity normally induced by social enrichment. Finally, using transgenic flies carrying a cAMP response Element (CRE)-luciferase reporter we show that activating ERK enhances CRE-Luc activity while disrupting ERK reduces it. These data suggest that ERK phosphorylation is an important mediator in transducing waking experience into sleep. 相似文献

Human tourists share space with, touch, feed, and otherwise interact with Macaca at multiple locations. Across Asia and stretching to Gibraltar and Northern Africa, macaques form a substantial tourist attraction
as their ranges become increasingly coincident with human use zones. Residing in or as tourist attractions, macaques frequently
generate economic benefits to local humans and compete with them for habitat and specific resources. In addition, health conflicts
may emerge from increased overlap and interactions between humans and macaques. There is only a handful of studies on the
impact, structure, context, and cultural ecology of macaque tourist sites. We provide a general overview of 2 macaque tourist
sites, one in Padangtegal, Bali, Indonesia and one in Gibraltar. Qualitative assessment reveals variability in behavioral,
ecological, economic, and politically relevant facets of macaque tourism. Specifically, differences in aggression during interactions,
potential health dangers, economic factors, and local human perceptions between Padangtegal and Gibraltar suggest that qualitative
assessments can assist in our construction of broader models and conceptualizations of the interaction context. 相似文献
