Plants are the world’s most consumed goods. They are of high economic value and bring many health benefits. In most countries in Africa, the supply and quality of food will rise to meet the growing population’s increasing demand. Genomics and other biotechnology tools offer the opportunity to improve subsistence crops and medicinal herbs in the continent. Significant advances have been made in plant genomics, which have enhanced our knowledge of the molecular processes underlying both plant quality and yield. The sequencing of complex genomes of African plant species, facilitated by the continuously evolving next-generation sequencing technologies and advanced bioinformatics approaches, has provided new opportunities for crop improvement. This review summarizes the achievements of genome sequencing projects of endemic African plants in the last two decades. We also present perspectives and challenges for future plant genomic studies that will accelerate important plant breeding programs for African communities. These challenges include a lack of basic facilities, a lack of sequencing and bioinformatics facilities, and a lack of skills to design genomics studies. However, it is imperative to state that African countries have become key players in the plant genome revolution and genome derived-biotechnology. Therefore, African governments should invest in public plant genomics research and applications, establish bioinformatics platforms and training programs, and stimulate university and industry partnerships to fully deploy plant genomics, particularly in the fields of agriculture and medicine. 相似文献

AbstractA great deal of research has been done on various uses of copper oxide. The synthesis of copper oxide nanoparticles was mediated using tea extract. The first sign of the reduction of copper ions to copper oxide was the change in color of extract to dark brown after treating with copper chloride. The resulting nanoparticles were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR). Finally, the antimicrobial effects of these nanoparticles on Fusarium solani were studied in vitro by agar dilution method. The TEM images showed the synthesis of copper oxide with size of less than 80?nm. The synthesized copper oxide nanoparticles showed significant inhibitory effects on F. solani cultures so that the concentration of 80?μg/ml prevented approximately 90% of the mycelium growth of the fungus. The results showed that the inhibition zone of silver nanoparticles strongly depends on their concentration and increases by increasing the concentration of copper oxide nanoparticles in the medium. 相似文献

In the present study, we characterize a polymorphism in the CD93 molecule, originally identified as the receptor for the C1q
complement component (i.e., C1qRp, or AA4.1) in non-obese diabetic (NOD) mice. This allele carries a coding polymorphism in
the first epidermal growth factor-like domain of CD93, which results in an amino acid substitution from Asn→His at position
264. This polymorphism does not appear to influence protein translation or ecto-domain cleavage, as CD93 is detectable in
bone-marrow-derived macrophage and B-cell precursor lysates and in soluble form in the serum. The NOD CD93 isoform causes
a phenotypic aberrancy in the early B-cell developmental stages (i.e., pro-, pre-, immature, and transitional), likely related
to a conformational variation. Interestingly, the NZB/W F1 strain, which serves as a murine model of Lupus, also expresses
an identical CD93 sequence polymorphism. Cd93 is located within the NOD Idd13 locus and is also tightly linked to the NZB/W F1 Wbw1 and Nkt2 disease susceptibility loci, which are thought to regulate natural killer T (NKT) cell homeostasis. Consistent with this
genetic linkage, we found B6 CD93−/− and B6.NODIdd13 mice to be susceptible to a profound CD4+ NKT cell deficient state. These data suggest that Cd93 may be an autoimmune susceptibility gene residing within the Idd13 locus, which plays a role in regulating absolute numbers of CD4+ NKT cells. 相似文献

The objective of this study was to analyze the immunogenicity and antigenicity of the V3 domain (Cys313–Cys346) of the external envelope glycoprotein gp125 of SIVmac251. The corresponding peptide was synthesized and characterized as linear and cyclic peptides. Our results showed that this region, as for HIV‐1, contained an immunodominant epitope. The antigenicity was similar for the linear and cyclic peptides when tested against a panel of 15 sera from SIV infected macaques. Similarly, both peptide structures presented similar immunogenicity as shown by the characterization of the anti‐peptide antibodies produced in rabbits against the cyclic and linear forms. But, unexpectedly, the antibodies produced against linear peptides recognized with a relatively higher intensity the native envelope gp140 than those produced against the cyclic structure. Furthermore, we showed that these antibodies recognized better the deglycosylated form of the glycoprotein. But, in contrast to the neutralizing activity obtained with anti‐V3 peptides from HIV‐1, no antiviral activity was obtained with antibodies generated against linear or cyclic SIVmac V3 peptides.
