Accurate and precise surveys of primate abundance provide the basis for understanding species ecology and essential information for conservation assessments. Owing to the elusive nature of wild apes and the vast region of dense forest they inhabit, population estimates of central chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes troglodytes) and western lowland gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) have largely relied on surveys of their nests. Specific information about the nesting behavior of apes permits the estimation of the number of nests built (nest creation rate). Similarly, information on nest characteristics and environmental factors can be used to estimate the time it takes nests to decay (nest decay rate). Nest creation and decay rates are then used to convert nest density estimates to absolute ape densities. Population estimates that use site-specific estimates of nest creation and decay rates are more accurate and precise. However, it is common practice to generalize these conversion factors across sites because of the additional cost of studies required to gather the information to estimate them. Over a 9-mo study period, we detected and monitored the time to decay of gorilla nests (N = 514) and chimpanzee nests (N = 521) in northern Republic of Congo. We investigated the influence of nest characteristics and environmental factors on nest survivorship and estimated the mean time to nest decay (or equivalently survival) using MARK. Key factors influencing nest decay rate included ape species, forest type, nest height, mean rainfall, nest structure, nest type, and primary aspects of nest construction. Our findings highlight the synergistic effect of behavior and environment on great ape nest degradation, as well as providing practical insights for improving measures to monitor remaining populations of these endangered species.  相似文献

We have investigated the stability of the choline-binding module C-LytA against sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS)-induced unfolding at pH 7.0 and 20 degrees C. A major intermediate with an unfolded N-terminal region accumulates at around 0.75 mM SDS, whereas 2.0 mM SDS was sufficient for a complete unfolding. This might be the first report of a protein being extensively unfolded by submicellar concentrations of SDS, occurring through formation of detergent clusters on the protein surface. All transitions were reversible upon SDS complexation with beta-cyclodextrin, allowing the calculation of thermodynamic parameters. A model for the unfolding of C-LytA by SDS is presented and compared to a previous denaturation scheme by guanidine hydrochloride.  相似文献

Protein quality was assayed by simultaneous measurement of lysine (Lys), carboxymethyllysine (CML) and lysinoalanine (LAL). GC-FID analysis of N-tert-butyl dimethylsilyl (tBDMSi) derivatives of these amino acids was undertaken. tBDMSi derivates were separated on a CP-SIL 5CB commercially fused silica capillary column (25 m x 0.25 mm i.d., 0.25 microm film thickness) employing a thermal gradient programmed from 200 to 300 degrees C. The identity of tBDMSi derivatives of Lys, CML and LAL was established by GC-MS while FID detection was employed for quantification. Analytical parameters such as linearity (lysine 350-4200 microM, LAL 3-81 microM, CML 16-172 microM), precision (1-13% variation coefficients), accuracy (85-108% average recovery) and limits of detection (lysine 0.4 mg/100 g protein, LAL 5.0 mg/100 g protein, CML 3.4 mg/100 g protein) and quantification (lysine 1.4 mg/100g protein, LAL 15.2 mg/100 g protein, CML 11.2 mg/100 g protein) were determined for validation of the analytical approach. Model systems and real foods have been studied. Kinetic of CML formation from different food proteins (BSA, soy protein, casein and gluten) was performed employing model systems. Carboxymethylation rate depended on the source of protein. Maillard reaction progressed to advanced stages damaging the protein quality of stored infant foods, soy drinks, boiled eggs and dry powdered crepes. CML values ranged from 62 to 440 mg/100 g protein were measured. LAL was also formed during boiling eggs (21-68 mg/100g protein) indicating additional damage by crosslinking reaction. In agreement, lysine content was affected by both food processing and storage.  相似文献

An ozone (O3) deposition model (DO3SE) is currently used in Europe to define the areas where O3 concentrations lead to absorbed O3 doses that exceed the flux-based critical levels above which phytotoxic effects would be likely recorded. This mapping exercise relies mostly on the accurate estimation of O3 flux through plant stomata. However, the present parameterization of the modulation of stomatal conductance (g(s)) behavior by different environmental variables needs further adjustment if O3 phytotoxicity is to be assessed accurately at regional or continental scales. A new parameterization of the model is proposed for Holm oak (Quercus ilex), a tree species that has been selected as a surrogate for all Mediterranean evergreen broadleaf species. This parameterization was based on a literature review, and was calibrated and validated using experimentally measured data of g(s) and several atmospheric and soil parameters recorded at three sites of the Iberian Peninsula experiencing long summer drought, and very cold and dry winter air (El Pardo and Miraflores) or milder conditions (Tietar). A fairly good agreement was found between modeled and measured data (R2 = 0.64) at Tietar. However, a reasonable performance (R2 = 0.47-0.62) of the model was only achieved at the most continental sites when g(s) and soil moisture deficit relationships were considered. The influence of root depth on g(s) estimation is discussed and recommendations are made to build up separate parameterizations for continental and marine-influenced Holm oak sites in the future.  相似文献

In general, it is difficult to measure air pollutant concentrations in remote areas, as they are mostly national parks and protected areas. Passive samplers provide an accurate and inexpensive method for measuring cumulative exposures of different air pollutants. They have been used to collect ozone data in both laboratory and field at different geographical scales. The objective of the present study is to fill the knowledge gap regarding air quality in remote areas of Spain, such as national parks and protected areas. Because there were no systematic data sets on the main air pollutants that could affect these areas, an air quality measurement network was established between 2001 and 2004 on 19 locations inside Spanish national parks and protected areas. The data collected suggest that ozone levels in mountainous areas are high enough to affect sensitive vegetation. Most of the locations registered moderate-to-high ozone levels, with important interannual variability. Altitudinal ozone gradients were observed in most of the parks with complex topography due to the establishment of local circulations that incorporate polluted air masses from polluted airsheds or even long-range transport (i.e., Canary Islands). Different latitude-dependent, yearly cycles were also observed, showing two, one, or no clear peaks depending on the region. These findings extend to the most southerly locations, except in the Canary Islands, where pollution transported from other regions in the upper transport layers probably led to the high concentrations observed.  相似文献
