The circular distribution of the willow warbler Phylloscopus trochilus around the Baltic Sea shares many features with the classic examples of ring species; however, the system is much younger. It has previously been shown that a secondary contact zone is located in central Scandinavia, where there are narrow clines for several morphological traits coincident with a migratory divide. Here we analyse multiple traits and genes from > 1700 males captured on breeding territories at 77 sites spread around the Baltic Sea to test the following hypothesis. If the secondary contact zone in Scandinavia is a result of divergence in two allopatric refuge populations during the last glaciation, we expect to find a similar secondary contact zone somewhere else around the circular distribution. Our results show that the trait clines were wider and displaced from each other along the eastern side of the Baltic Sea. Analyses of 12 microsatellite loci confirmed that the genome is very similar between the terminal forms ( F ST = 0). Two AFLP-derived markers filtered out from a genomic scan instead appear to be maintained by selection. These markers exhibited steep clines at the secondary contact zone in Scandinavia, but as for the phenotypic traits, had vastly different cline centres east of the Baltic Sea. The trait clines along the ring distribution outside the Scandinavian secondary contact zone thus seem to have been shaped by independent action of selection or drift during the process of postglacial colonization.  相似文献

Feist‐Burkhardt, S. & Pross, J. 2010: Dinoflagellate cyst biostratigraphy of the Opalinuston Formation (Middle Jurassic) in the Aalenian type area in southwest Germany and north Switzerland. Lethaia, Vol. 43, pp. 10–31. In order to provide a detailed dinoflagellate cyst stratigraphy of the Lower Aalenian Opalinuston Formation from the Aalenian type area, 68 samples from four boreholes and one outcrop section were analysed. The sample localities are Hausen an der Fils and Wittnau in southwest Germany, Weiach in north Switzerland and Mont Russelin in the Swiss Jura Mountains. Dinoflagellate cyst assemblages were recovered from the Late Toarcian Aalensis Zone to the Late Aalenian Murchisonae Zone. The samples yielded rich, well‐preserved and diverse assemblages with 51 dinoflagellate cyst taxa identified in total. The dinoflagellate cyst distribution data obtained from this study allow a high‐resolution biostratigraphical subdivision of the lowermost Middle Jurassic Opalinuston Formation into four palynostratigraphical units. First and last occurrences, acmes and consistent presence of the species Batiacasphaera sp. A, Evansia cf. granochagrinata, Kallosphaeridium praussii, Nannoceratopsis triangulata, Phallocysta? frommernensis and Wallodinium laganum were selected as the criteria for defining these units. The obtained high‐resolution palynostratigraphical scheme provides a basis for establishing and further refining early Middle Jurassic biostratigraphy in the Boreal and Tethyan realms. □Aalenian, biostratigraphy, dinoflagellate cysts, Germany, Jurassic, Switzerland, Toarcian.  相似文献

The partial pressure of CO2 at the sites of carboxylation within chloroplasts depends on the conductance to CO2 diffusion from intercellular airspace to the sites of carboxylation, termed mesophyll conductance (gm). We investigated the temperature response of gm in tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) by combining gas exchange in high light, ambient CO2 in either 2 or 21% O2 with carbon isotope measurements using tuneable diode laser spectroscopy. The gm increased linearly with temperature in 2 or 21% O2. In 21% O2, isotope discrimination associated with gm decreased from 5.0 ± 0.2 to 1.8 ± 0.2‰ as temperature increased from 15 to 40 °C, but the photorespiratory contribution to the isotopic signal is significant. While the fractionation factor for photorespiration (f = 16.2 ± 0.7‰) was independent of temperature between 20 and 35 °C, discrimination associated with photorespiration increased from 1.1 ± 0.01 to 2.7 ± 0.02‰ from 15 to 40 °C. Other mitochondrial respiration contributed around 0.2 ± 0.03‰. The drawdown in CO2 partial pressure from ambient air to intercellular airspaces was nearly independent of leaf temperature. By contrast, the increase in gm with increasing leaf temperature resulted in the drawdown in CO2 partial pressure between intercellular airspaces and the sites of carboxylation decreasing substantially at high temperature.  相似文献

Selection pressure by natural enemies on phytophagous insect larvae is intense and has frequently triggered the evolution of chemical defence as an effective counterstrategy. In the chrysomelid subfamily Galerucinae, glandular structures and defensive fluids have been described for the tribe Sermylini Wilcox, 1965. Previous morphological and ultrastructural studies raised doubts that these defensive devices in Sermylini can be traced back to a common origin. The taxonomy of the Galerucinae cannot clear these doubts because the phylogeny of this taxon is a matter of current debate. We therefore investigated the phylogeny of the Galerucinae based on approximately 1740 bp of the mitochondrial 12S and 16S rRNA and the nuclear elongation factor 1 alpha genes. Our data support the hypothesized close relationship between the subfamilies Galerucinae and Alticinae, yet, by contrast to other recent analyses, the two groups are mostly resolved as monophyletic sister groups or, in some analyses, with the Galerucinae nested paraphyletically within the Alticinae. Within the subfamily Galerucinae, only the tribe Galerucini formed a monophyletic taxon, except for one species, Cerochroa brachialis Stal, 1858. In none of our analyses were the Sermylini recovered as a monophyletic tribe. However, our data support monophyly of each of the three groups within the Sermylini that have morphologically distinguishable larval defensive openings. We conclude that the defensive structures in larvae of Sermylini have no common origin, but evolved independently. Global climate change is a threat to ecosystems that are rich in biodiversity and endemism, such as the World Heritage‐listed subtropical rainforests of central eastern Australia. Possible effects of climate change on the biota of tropical rainforests have been studied, but subtropical rainforests have received less attention. We analysed published data for an assemblage of 38 subtropical rainforest vertebrate species in four taxonomic groups to evaluate their relative vulnerability to climate change. Focusing on endemic and/or threatened species, we considered two aspects of vulnerability: (i) resistance, defined by indicators of rarity (geographical range, habitat specificity and local abundance); and (ii) resilience, defined by indicators of a species potential to recover (reproductive output, dispersal potential and climatic niche). Our analysis indicated that frogs are most vulnerable to climate change, followed by reptiles, birds, then mammals. Many species in our assemblage are regionally endemic montane rainforest specialists with high vulnerability. Monitoring of taxa in regenerating rainforest showed that many species with high resilience traits also persisted in disturbed habitat, suggesting that they have capacity to recolonize habitats after disturbance, that is climate change‐induced events. These results will allow us to prioritize adaptation strategies for species most at risk. We conclude that to safeguard the most vulnerable amphibian, reptile and bird species against climate change, climatically stable habitats (cool refugia) that are currently without protection status need to be identified, restored and incorporated in the current reserve system. Our study provides evidence that montane subtropical rainforest deserves highest protection status as habitat for vulnerable taxa.  相似文献

1. Oviposition preferences of herbivorous insects are predicted to match offspring performance on different host taxa or on conspecific host genotypes. In gall‐inducing insects, host‐plant properties such as growth rate and gall size, which are determined by plant genotype and growing conditions, may have a significant impact on offspring performance and, hence, should influence oviposition site selection. 2. The present study investigated host preference of the European rosette willow gall midge Rabdophaga rosaria (Loew) in relation to offspring success on seven clones of Salix myrsinifolia Salisb. and two naturally hybridised S. myrsinifolia × phylicifolia L. clones growing in a replicated design in an experimental field under two fertilisation regimes. For each clone, the average growth rate, number of shoot tips, and leaf and gall size were determined, and their effects on midge preference and larval survival were examined. 3. Main shoot height, number of shoot tips, and gall size were significantly affected by clone. The midges clearly preferred certain clones over the others, but preferences were not related to willow growth traits or to gall size. Survival probability was higher in large than in small galls, but females did not prefer large‐leaved clones that produced the biggest rosette galls. Midge oviposition was also uncorrelated with prior rates of leaf‐rust infection and with feeding preferences of voles and folivorous insects. 4. The weak preference–performance relationship of R. rosaria within S. myrsinifolia is probably explained by evolutionary constraints that prevent generalist insects from achieving an ability to discriminate among conspecific hosts of variable quality.  相似文献

The Kohl Ranch locality in the Naco Formation of central Arizona has yielded an abundant and diverse fauna including eight genera of brachiopods and four of sharks including Cochliodus. The most abundant brachiopod, Composita subtilita , was analyzed for predation damage and of 935 specimens 503 (53.7%) were found to show the type of unrepaired crushing previously attributed to shark predation. Reconstruction of the jaw of Cochliodus , however, suggests that it may have been a selective feeder similar to the modern Heterodontus and unlikely therefore to have left so many damaged but uningested specimens. Evidence from specimens collected in situ suggests that the damage mostly occurred post-mortem due to the compaction of the sediments and was not due to the sharks who would have comminuted any prey items taken.  相似文献

1. Changes in cladoceran subfossils in the surface sediments of 54 shallow lakes were studied along a European latitude gradient (36–68°N). Multivariate methods, such as regression trees and ordination, were applied to explore the relationships between cladoceran taxa distribution and contemporary environmental variables, with special focus on the impact of climate. 2. Multivariate regression tree analysis showed distinct differences in cladoceran community structure and lake characteristics along the latitude gradient, identifying three groups: (i) northern lakes characterised by low annual mean temperature, conductivity, nutrient concentrations and fish abundance, (ii) southern, macrophyte rich, warm water lakes with high conductivity and high fish abundance and (iii) Mid‐European lakes at intermediate latitudes with intermediate conductivities, trophic state and temperatures. 3. Large‐sized, pelagic species dominated a group of seven northern lakes with low conductivity, where acid‐tolerant species were also occasionally abundant. Small‐sized, benthic‐associated species dominated a group of five warm water lakes with high conductivity. Cladoceran communities generally showed low species‐specific preferences for habitat and environmental conditions in the Mid‐European group of lakes. Taxon richness was low in the southern‐most, high‐conductivity lakes as well as in the two northern‐most sub‐arctic lakes. 4. The proportion of cladoceran resting eggs relative to body shields was high in the northern lakes, and linearly (negatively) related to both temperature and Chl a, indicating that both cold climate (short growing season) and low food availability induce high ephippia production. 5. Latitude and, implicitly, temperature were strongly correlated with conductivity and nutrient concentrations, highlighting the difficulties of disentangling a direct climate signal from indirect effects of climate, such as changes in fish community structure and human‐related impacts, when a latitude gradient is used as a climate proxy. Future studies should focus on the interrelationships between latitude and gradients in nutrient concentration and conductivity.  相似文献
