Dysplastic Nevus Syndrome (DNS) has been defined as that trait characterized by the presence of at least one dysplastic melanocytic nevus. DNS was originally described in kindreds having multiple members with melanoma. Various types DNS have been described in other situations to include individuals with apparently sporadic cases, familial DNS without melanoma and individuals with apparently sporadic DNS with melanoma. These categories are based on historical information in general, and not on examination of family members. In all cases, the presence of dysplastic nevi appear to confer some increased risk of melanoma, which varies between the groups. Similarly cutaneous melanoma is thought to occur in several distinct populations-random individuals without DNS, individuals with sporadic DNS, and those with familial DNS. Genetic analysis of DNS has been largely confined to the classically ascertained kindreds associated with melanoma. These studies have usually used diagnostic criteria based on pathology of clinically selected material, and that evidence suggests that DNS is inherited as an autosomal dominant trait in these families. Surveys of the general population have detected rates of dysplastic nevi of 5% 20%. In our Utah-based studies, we have evaluated probands and family members from three groups. These included kindreds with multiple occurrences of melanoma, random individuals with at least one dysplastic nevus, and cases of melanoma with unknown family history. Controls were spouses of study subjects. We sought to determine the percentage of each group associated with dysplastic nevi and/or genetic DNS. The range of phenotype of patients with dysplastic nevi was large with some individuals having few nevi, none of which were clinically atypical, and others having greater than 100 nevi. The prevalence of dysplastic nevi in at least one of two biopsies in Utah population controls is presently Wtimated at 62%. Some probands with melanoma as well as some of their relatives had elevated numbers of nevi, suggesting that this predisposition to melanoma may be inherited.  相似文献

The anatomy and morphology of nearly mature fruits in 85 mainly palaeotropical species of Melastomataceae were examined using microtome- and hand-sectioning, and differential staining. Much structural heterogeneity was observed in both capsules and berries. Mul-tivariate analyses of 31 of the 52 characters recorded for each species, revealed that indehiscence is associated with fusion of ovary and hypanthium tissues, placenta persistence, lack of a persistent endocarp, and a dearth of srlereids in these tissues, while dehiscenre is correlated with the opposite states and a persistent exocarp. Other fruit characters such as lignification or fleshiness of tissues do not show a consistent association with dehiscence. Break down of broad fruit types, such as 'berry' and 'capsule', into their individual morphological and anatomical traits shows how unusual fruit types, such as woody berries, fleshy capsules, and capsules containing fleshy placentas (display fruits), which are common in palaeotropical Melastomeae and Dissochaeteae, contribute to a loosening of expected correlations. Thus, discriminant analysis clearly differentiated display fruits from the other fruit types because of their combination of fleshy placentas with a persistent endocarp and absence of ovary/hypanthium fusion. The evolution of fruit types within Melastomataceae, and especially Dissochaeteae, and their reliability as phylogenetic indicators is discussed in the light of molecular phylogenies for these groups that show that berries and capsules evolved several times independently, explaining the observed heterogeneity of outwardly similar fruits. Fruit diversity within Melastoma , a monophyletic genus of 22 species, provides an example of the plasticity afforded by the particular construction of Melastomataceae fruits, which has contributed to ecological diversification in melastome seed dispersal.  相似文献

The spruce bark beetle Ips typographus is one of the major insect pests of mature Norway spruce forests. In this study, a model describing the temperature-dependent thresholds for swarming activity and temperature requirement for development from egg to adult was driven by transient regional climate scenario data for Sweden, covering the period of 1961–2100 for three future climate change scenarios (SRES A2, A1B and B2). During the 20th century, the weather supported the production of one bark beetle generation per year, except in the north-western mountainous parts of Sweden where the climate conditions were too harsh. A warmer climate may sustain a viable population also in the mountainous part; however, the distributional range of I. typographus may be restricted by the migration speed of Norway spruce. Modelling suggests that an earlier timing of spring swarming and fulfilled development of the first generation will significantly increase the frequency of summer swarming. Model calculations suggest that the spruce bark beetle will be able to initiate a second generation in South Sweden during 50% of the years around the mid century. By the end of the century, when temperatures during the bark beetle activity period are projected to have increased by 2.4–3.8 °C, a second generation will be initiated in South Sweden in 63–81% of the years. The corresponding figures are 16–33% for Mid Sweden, and 1–6% for North Sweden. During the next decades, one to two generations per year are predicted in response to temperature, and the northern distribution limit for the second generation will vary. Our study addresses questions applicable to sustainable forest management, suggesting that adequate countermeasures require monitoring of regional differences in timing of swarming and development of I. typographus , and planning of control operations during summer periods with large populations of bark beetles.  相似文献

1. In order to test the effect of Ochromonas sp. , a mixotrophic chrysophyte, on cyanobacteria, grazing experiments were performed under controlled conditions. We studied grazing on three Microcystis aeruginosa strains, varying in toxicity and morphology, as well as on one filamentous cyanobacterium, Pseudanabaena sp. Furthermore, we analysed the co-occurrence of Ochromonas and Microcystis in natural systems in relation to various environmental parameters (TP, TN, DOC, temperature, pH), using data from 460 Norwegian lakes.
2.  Ochromonas was able to feed on all four cyanobacterial strains tested, and grew quickly on all of them. The chrysophyte caused net growth reductions in all three Microcystis strains (the very toxic single-celled strain PCC 7806; the less toxic colony-forming Bear AC and the less toxic single-celled Spring CJ). The effect of Ochromonas was strongest on the Spring CJ strain. Although the effect of Ochromonas grazing on the growth of Pseudanabaena was relatively smaller, it also reduced the net growth of this cyanobacterium significantly.
3. After 4 days of incubation with Ochromonas the total amount of cyanotoxins in the three Microcystis strains was reduced by 91.1–98.7% compared with the controls.
4.  Ochromonas occurred in similar densities across all 460 Norwegian lakes. Microcystis occurred only at higher TN, TP, temperature and pH values, although its density was often several orders of magnitude higher than that of Ochromonas . Ochromonas co-occurred in 94% of the samples in which Microcystis was present.
5. From our study it is not clear whether Ochromonas could control Microcystis blooms in natural lakes. However, our study does demonstrate that Ochromonas usually occurs in lakes with Microcystis , and our small scale experiments show that Ochromonas can strongly reduce the biomass of Microcystis and its toxin content.  相似文献

To become invasive, exotic species have to succeed in the consecutive phases of introduction, naturalization, and invasion. Each of these phases leaves traces in genetic structure, which may affect the species’ success in subsequent phases. We examined this interplay of genetic structure and invasion dynamics in the South African Ragwort (Senecio inaequidens), one of Europe’s fastest plant invaders. We used AFLP and microsatellite markers to analyze 19 native African and 32 invasive European populations. In combination with historic data, we distinguished invasion routes and traced them back to the native source areas. This revealed that different introduction sites had markedly different success in the three invasion phases. Notably, an observed lag‐phase in Northern Germany was evidently not terminated by factors increasing the invasiveness of the resident population but by invasive spread from another introduction centre. The lineage invading Central Europe was introduced to sites in which winters are more benign than in the native source region. Subsequently, this lineage spread into areas in which winter temperatures match the native climate more closely. Genetic diversity clearly increases with population age in Europe and less clearly decreases with spread rate up to population establishment. This indicates that gene flow along well‐connected invasion routes counteracted losses of genetic diversity during rapid spread. In summary, this study suggests that multiple introductions, environmental preadaptation and high gene flow along invasion routes contributed to the success of this rapid invader. More generally, it demonstrates the benefit of combining genetic, historical, and climatic data for understanding biological invasions.  相似文献

We compared three transgenic poplar lines over‐expressing the bacterial γ‐glutamylcysteine synthetase (GSH1) targeted to plastids. Lines Lggs6 and Lggs12 have two copies, while line Lggs20 has three copies of the transgene. The three lines differ in their expression levels of the transgene and in the accumulation of γ‐glutamylcysteine (γ‐EC) and glutathione (GSH) in leaves, roots and phloem exudates. The lowest transgene expression level was observed in line Lggs6 which showed an increased growth, an enhanced rate of photosynthesis and a decreased excitation pressure (1‐qP). The latter typically represents a lower reduction state of the plastoquinone pool, and thereby facilitates electron flow along the electron transport chain. Line Lggs12 showed the highest transgene expression level, highest γ‐EC accumulation in leaves and highest GSH enrichment in phloem exudates and roots. This line also exhibited a reduced growth, and after a prolonged growth of 4.5 months, symptoms of leaf injury. Decreased maximum quantum yield (Fv/Fm) indicated down‐regulation of photosystem II reaction centre (PSII RC), which correlates with decreased PSII RC protein D1 (PsbA) and diminished light‐harvesting complex (Lhcb1). Potential effects of changes in chloroplastic and cytosolic GSH contents on photosynthesis, growth and the whole‐plant sulphur nutrition are discussed for each line.  相似文献

In a previous study of the phylogeny of basal Hymenoptera, Vilhelmsen (2001; Zool. J. Linn. Soc . 131 : 393–442) compiled an extensive morphological data matrix for a phylogenetic analysis of basal Hymenoptera, comprising 38 hymenopteran genera. In this study, his characters are revised. This results in a cladogram whose relationships largely agree with those proposed by Vilhelmsen, except that the relationships at the base of the Hymenoptera are unresolved. The revised data matrix is expanded by 17 sawfly and three apocritan taxa. Moreover, 112 new morphological characters from different parts of the larval and adult morphology are also added to the data matrix, including 82 from a recent study of the terminal abdominal segments of male Hymenoptera. The addition of the new characters leads to Xyelidae, again, being the sister-group of all other Hymenoptera. The relationships among the sawfly families as proposed by Vilhelmsen are confirmed, except that the relationships among Syntexis , Siricidae and Xiphydriidae + Vespina are unresolved and that the monophyly of Apocrita is not convincingly supported. A separate analysis is performed which includes all extant genera of Xyelidae. The ant genus Hypoponera, with its high diversity of alternative reproductive tactics, is of particular interest in studies on sexual selection. In the species Hypoponera opacior, winged and wingless males and queens co‐occur and molecular markers are essential to study the reproductive success of these sexual tactics. Primers were developed for five polymorphic microsatellite loci isolated from H. opacior. Their variability was tested on 34 colonies from a population in the United States. Nine to 21 alleles per locus were found with observed heterozygosities between 0.1 and 0.7. A significantly positive FIS value suggests inbreeding in this ant with predominant intracolonial matings.  相似文献

1. We present data with a high spatio‐temporal resolution from a 72‐h field survey in Bautzen Reservoir (Saxony, Germany). The aims of this survey were to observe hydrophysical processes during a period of unstable stratification in spring and investigate the effect of wind‐induced internal waves on the vertical distribution of zooplankton. 2. Wind velocities up to 10 m s−1 caused a strong downwelling event of warm water at the sampling site and led to the generation of internal waves with an amplitude of 4 m. 3. The zooplankton community, which was dominated by Daphnia galeata, inhabited epilimnetic waters. Downwelling enlarged the thickness of the epilimnetic layer and, hence, led to high zooplankton abundances down to relatively deep water strata indicating lateral transport of zooplankton. As a consequence, area‐specific zooplankton abundances increased considerably (max. fourfold) during downwelling. 4. We conclude that classical limnological field sampling, such as for monitoring purposes, can lead to severely biased estimates of zooplankton abundance due to the interfering effects of hydrophysical processes like internal waves. 5. Backscattering strengths measured by a simultaneously deployed Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (600 kHz) were found to be correlated with estimated zooplankton abundances based on plankton samples.  相似文献

1. This study describes the environmental conditions and cladoceran community structure of 29 Faroese lakes with special focus on elucidating the impact of fish planktivory. In addition, long‐term changes in biological structure of the Faroese Lake Heygsvatn are investigated. 2. Present‐day species richness and community structure of cladocerans were identified from pelagial snapshot samples and from samples of surface sediment (0–1 cm). Multivariate statistical methods were applied to explore cladoceran species distribution relative to measured environmental variables. For Lake Heygsvatn, lake development was inferred by cladoceran‐based paleolimnological investigations of a 14C‐dated sediment core covering the last ca 5700 years. 3. The 29 study lakes were overall shallow, small‐sized, oligotrophic and dominated by brown trout (Salmo trutta). Cladoceran species richness was overall higher in the surface sediment samples than in the snapshot samples. 4. Fish abundance was found to be of only minor importance in shaping cladoceran community and body size structure, presumably because of predominance of the less efficient zooplanktivore brown trout. 5. Canonical correspondence analysis showed maximum lake depth (Zmax) to be the only significant variable in explaining the sedimentary cladoceran species (18 cladoceran taxa, two pelagic, 16 benthic) distribution. Multivariate regression trees revealed benthic taxa to dominate in lakes with Zmax < 4.8 m and pelagic taxa to dominate when Zmax was > 4.8 m. 6. Predictive models to infer Zmax were developed using variance weighted‐averaging procedures. These were subsequently applied to subfossil cladoceran assemblages identified from a 14C‐dated sediment core from Lake Heygsvatn and showed inferred Zmax to correspond well to the present‐day lake depth. A recent increase in inferred Zmax may, however, be an artefact induced by, for instance, eutrophication.  相似文献
