The moult of Barred Warblers Sylvia nisoria was studied during three winter seasons in southeastern Kenya at a southward passage site (Ngulia) and a wintering site (Mtito Andei). Most Barred Warblers migrating through Ngulia in November had yet to commence winter moult. These birds probably moulted subsequently in winter in northern Tanzania. In December, birds were found in heavy moult at Mtito Andei, and some of these birds were known to stay throughout the winter. By contrast, most birds reaching southeastern Kenya from late December onwards had already completed part or all of their winter moult, presumably at stopover sites in northern and eastern Kenya or in Ethiopia. Thus, winter moult in Barred Warblers takes place mainly in late November and December, either just before or soon after the final leg of autumn migration. In general, first-year birds renewed all tertials and tail feathers, about three to five secondaries per wing and commonly also the outer one to four large primaries per wing. Adults renewed all tertials and tail feathers, almost all secondaries and only occasionally an outer primary. The replacement of relatively fresh juvenile secondaries during the birds' first winter implies that the split moult pattern of this species (secondaries, tertials and tail moulted in winter; primaries and tertials in summer) is endogenously controlled.  相似文献

The daily pattern of autumn bird migration in the northern Sahara   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The temporal pattern of migration by passerine birds during the night, and their arrival during the day at the Egyptian coast and in the northern Sahara Desert was investigated. The mean direction of nocturnal migration at the coast was south-southeast, while at all desert sites it was south-southwest.
Birds arrived at the Egyptian coast only during the second half of the night which is explained by the fact that no birds could have taken off from the Mediterranean Sea. At least some of the birds landed at the coast where they spent the day before taking off shortly after sunset. These birds passed the desert sites at the expected time of day assuming a ground speed of 18 m per second. However, the origin of the birds passing the desert sites early at night is unclear. They must either have spent the day in the desert north of the study sites or they had overflown the Egyptian coast in the afternoon without landing.
The landing of birds during the day at the desert sites was bimodal. This pattern of arrival is explained either by some birds having landed at the Egyptian coast in the early morning before continuing, or by deteriorating conditions later in the day during flight or when resting in the desert, that obliged them to seek shelter at the desert sites.
A correlation between the number of migrants observed during the night and the number of resting birds in the desert on the following day suggests that an unknown proportion of birds might regularly use an intermittent migratory strategy that includes rest periods by day when crossing the desert, whereas others might adapt a non-stop migratory strategy.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. The lugworm Arenicola marina and the peanut worm Sipunculusnudus both inhabit intertidal flats. Sulfide concentrationsin the pore water of the sediment can be as high as 340 µMin the habitat of A. marina. Sulfide levels in the burrow waterand in the coelomic fluid increase during low tide. In contrast,S. nudus is only rarely exposed to sulfide. Neither A. marinanor S. nudus is able to exclude sulfide completely from itsbody. However, both worms accumulate only 15 to 40% respectivelyof the external sulfide concentration during hypoxic 1 mM sulfideincubations. During normoxia, sulfide accumulation is more thanten-fold lower than under hypoxic conditions in both species. When oxygen is available, sulfide is oxidized to thiosulfate. The oxidation rate is about 5 times higher in A. marina thanin S. nudus. A major component of sulfide oxidation is due tothe mitochondria of both species. Mitochondrial sulfide oxidationin the tissues of A. marina is insensitive to low cyanide andto high sulfide concentrations, but can be inhibited by salicylhydroxamicacid. The existence of an alternative terminal oxidase is suggested. When the sulfide level in the body of A. marina and S. nudusincreases above a toxic level, both species survive by switchingto an anaerobic metabolism.  相似文献

In birds, large brains are associated with a series of population‐level phenomena, including invasion success, species richness, and resilience to population decline. Thus, they appear to open up adaptive opportunities through flexibility in foraging and anti‐predator behaviour. The evolutionary pathway leading to large brain size has received less attention than behavioural and ecological correlates. Using a comparative approach, we show that, independent of previously recognized associations with developmental constraints, relative brain size in birds is strongly related to biparental care, pair‐bonding, and stable social relationships. We also demonstrate correlated evolution between large relative brain size and altricial development, and that the evolution of both traits is contingent on biparental care. Thus, biparental care facilitates altricial development, which permits the evolution of large relative brain size. Finally, we show that large relative brain size is associated with pair‐bond strength, itself a likely consequence of cooperation and negotiation between partners under high levels of parental investment. These analyses provide an evolutionary model for the evolution of and prevalence of biparental care, altricial development, and pair‐bonding in birds. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 100 , 111–123.  相似文献

1. We conducted an experimental study of predation by benthivorous fish on a natural community of stream invertebrates using a reach‐scale approach. Over a 2‐year period (experimental phase), the benthic invertebrate community of a stretch containing two species of benthivorous fish was compared with a fishless stretch. Thereafter, all fish were removed and benthic community structure was analysed again to account for natural differences between the two stretches (reference phase). 2. Benthivorous fish at the moderate densities investigated did not affect total benthic biomass or density, but did alter species composition. In addition, the fish effect differed between pool and riffle habitats, with larger effects in the pools indicating a habitat‐specific predation effect. In the reference phase, when all fish were removed from the stream, the difference between the two stretches was reduced. 3. The benthivorous fish reduced the densities of four taxa (Pisidium sp., Dugesia gonocephala, Gammarus pulex, Limoniidae), representing 29% of total biomass. It is possible that density reductions of other species were masked by prey migration despite the relatively large spatial scale. Indeed, higher drift activity in the upstream fishless stretch could have increased the density of Baetis rhodani in the fish stretch, as indicated by the results of a drift model. 4. Our results provide insights into stream food web ecology because fish predation showed effects even in a natural system where habitat complexity was high, environmental factors were highly variable and many predator and prey species interacted and because benthivorous fish were the focus, whereas the majority of previous predation experiments in streams have used drift‐feeding trout.  相似文献

Carbon storage and sequestration in tropical mountain forests and their dependence on elevation and temperature are not well understood. In an altitudinal transect study in the South Ecuadorian Andes, we tested the hypotheses that (i) aboveground net primary production (ANPP) decreases continuously with elevation due to decreasing temperatures, whereas (ii) belowground productivity (BNPP) remains constant or even increases with elevation due to a shift from light to nutrient limitation of tree growth. In five tropical mountain forests between 1050 and 3060 m a.s.l., we investigated all major above‐ and belowground biomass and productivity components, and the stocks of soil organic carbon (SOC). Leaf biomass, stemwood mass and total aboveground biomass (AGB) decreased by 50% to 70%, ANPP by about 70% between 1050 and 3060 m, while stem wood production decreased 20‐fold. Coarse and large root biomass increased slightly, fine root biomass fourfold, while fine root production (minirhizotron study) roughly doubled between 1050 and 3060 m. The total tree biomass (above‐ and belowground) decreased from about 320 to 175 Mg dry mass ha?1, total NPP from ca. 13.0 to 8.2 Mg ha?1 yr?1. The belowground/aboveground ratio of biomass and productivity increased with elevation indicating a shift from light to nutrient limitation of tree growth. We propose that, with increasing elevation, an increasing nitrogen limitation combined with decreasing temperatures causes a large reduction in stand leaf area resulting in a substantial reduction of canopy carbon gain toward the alpine tree line. We conclude that the marked decrease in tree height, AGB and ANPP with elevation in these mountain forests is caused by both a belowground shift of C allocation and a reduction in C source strength, while a temperature‐induced reduction in C sink strength (lowered meristematic activity) seems to be of secondary importance.  相似文献

Molecular characters are analysed on their own and in combination with morphological data to examine the phylogenetic relationships of the basal lineages of Hymenoptera ('Symphyta'). This study covers 47 sawfly genera and nine apocritan families and includes molecular sequences from five genes − 12S, 16S, 18S and 28S ribosomal genes and cytochrome oxidase 1 − as well as 343 morphological characters. A robust-choice sensitivity analysis is performed with the data. First, the simultaneous analysis is repeated three times, each time employing a different step matrix for weighting the transformations of the molecular characters. Then, the results of all three simultaneous analyses are summarized in a strict consensus in order to avoid basing the conclusions on a narrow set of assumptions. This methodology is discussed in the paper. The relationships among superfamilies largely confirm previous hypotheses, being (Xyeloidea (Tenthredinoidea s.l. (Pamphilioidea (Cephoidea (Siricoidea (Xiphydrioidea (Orussoidea Apocrita))))))), where Siricoidea is understood as Siricidae+Anaxyelidae. However, the relationships within Tenthredinoidea s.s. proposed here are novel: ({Argidae Pergidae}[ Athalia {(Diprionidae Cimbicidae) Tenthredinidae minus Athalia }]).  © 2003 The Linnean Society of London . 1. We describe the changes in trophic dynamics in Lake Maggiore from c. 1943 to 2002 using subfossil cladoceran data from a high resolution sediment record, long‐term contemporary data series and historical information. During this period the lake went through a eutrophication phase until 1980 followed by oligotrophication. 2. During the eutrophication period a major increase occurred in the abundance of Chydorus sphaericus, the proportion of planktonic cladocerans and total abundance of cladocerans in the sediment. Since 1980 the abundance declined again and subfossil Eubosmina mucro length and contemporary Daphnia body length increased, most probably as a result of higher abundance of invertebrate predators. 3. Changes in the fish stock composition caused by the introduction of exotic fish during the pre‐eutrophication period and a complete ban on fishing because of Dichloro‐diphenil‐ethanes (DDTs) pollution of the lake (during oligotrophication) could also be detected in the community assemblage and size structure of the sediment zooplankton. 4. We found good correspondence between trophic changes inferred from cladoceran subfossils (community composition, size and predation pressure) and contemporary data, suggesting that sediment samples can be used to infer past development in trophic dynamics, including predation by fish and pelagic invertebrates in lakes with scarce neolimnological data. 5. Furthermore, by combining palaeolimnological cladoceran data rarely obtained from contemporary samples (e.g. benthic and plant‐associated cladocerans, mucro length of bosminids) with contemporary data of organisms poorly represented in the sediment record (e.g. remains of Bythotrephes and fishes) a more complete understanding of changes in trophic dynamics was obtained. 6. The detection in the sediments of meteorological events whose effects on zooplankton had been recorded in the long‐term studies also provided evidence that eutrophication tends to override climate signals. 7. We conclude that a combined palaeo‐neolimnological approach can be a powerful tool for elucidating past changes in the trophic dynamics of lakes and the interaction with climate induced changes, not least when high resolution sediment records are available.  相似文献

The development of taurine uptake into the unicellular greenalga Chlorella fusca 211-8b was characterized as a specificresponse to either nitrate or sulphate limitation. Taurine transportunder nitrogen starvation was stimulated by low pH and showeda biphasic kinetics with Km-values of 1.1 x 10–3 mol dm–3and 1.0 x 10–2 mol dm–3. Uptake was substantiallyinhibited by all - and ß-amino acids tested, whereassulphonate analogues failed to diminish taurine accumulation. Thus, uptake seemed to be mediated by a ‘general aminoacid permease’, unable to discriminate between carboxyland sulphonyl groups. However, Chlorella fusca could not catabolizethis unusual ß-amino acid and mobilize the amino-boundnitrogen for growth. Only a small group of -amino acids supportedthe growth of Chlorella fusca as an efficient nitrogen source. Key words: Taurine uptake, nitrogen starvation, amino acid uptake, Chlorella fusca.  相似文献
