ABSTRACT. The uppermost dorsal part of the honey bee's compound eye contains a group of c. 150 specialized ommatidia. The photoreceptors of these ommatidia are characterized by a number of anatomical and physiological peculiarities which suggest that they have functional significance for the detection of polarized skylight. Here, we show by painting out different parts of the eye and recording the bee's behavioural responses that the specialized photoreceptors at the dorsal margin of the eye are indeed necessary for detecting polarized skylight and deriving compass information from celestial e-vector patterns. Hence, this group of specialized ommatidia can be called the POL area of the bee's compound eye. 相似文献

Abstract Comparative studies of sound production and sound emission in seven species of European tettigoniids have been carried out. The species chosen were two Tettigoniines (Tettigonia cantans, Tettigonia viridissima), two Ephippigerines (Ephippiger discoidalis, Ephippiger ephippiger), and three Decticines (Decticus albifrons, Decticus verrucivorus, Psorodonotus illyricus). The factors which determined the choice of species were the different morphology (for example body shape and weight, and wing size) of the three subfamilies. The parameters of the different songs (e.g. dominant frequency, intensity) are normally not correlated to any of the investigated morphological characteristics of the animals. In the brachypterous species intraspecific correlations exist between wing size and the dominant low frequency band of the call. This frequency band is also observable at related higher frequencies in the ultrasonic range (20–60 kHz), the observed band width increasing with frequency. Sound emission in all species is to some extent directional. This directionality is related to body size and wing structure. The song structure of the different species does not appear to be related to any observable characteristic of the habitat of die animals. A possible exception may be the song of Psorodonotus illyricus with a particularly low dominant frequency band. The phylogenetic development of the songs seems to be determined by relationships between the different species rather than to any factors contributed by the habitat. 相似文献

ABSTRACT. The ultrastructure of the oral region and the ultrastructural architecture of the basket of Prorodon aklitolophon and Prorodon teres are described. the oral region of Prorodon consists of: 1) A circumoral kinety at the anterior pole of the cell surrounding the typically slit-shaped cytostomial funnel. This kinety is composed of inversely oriented dikinetids in which both kinetosomes are ciliated and are associated with a very short postciliary microtubular ribbon and a few transverse microtubules; 2) Three brush rows aligned in parallel and extended meridionally in the anterior part of the cell. the individual brush rows consist of dikinetids, but in contrast to the dikinetids around the cytopharynx they are not inverted and only the anterior kinetosomes bear specialized short brush cilia and are associated with a divergent-tangential transverse microtubular ribbon. the posterior kinetosome is non-ciliated and bears a prominent convergent postciliary microtubular ribbon. Schematized dikinetid patterns of both oral regions of Prorodon are provided. In addition, a three-dimensional reconstruction of the basket of the genus Prorodon based on serial thin sections is presented. A phylogenetic tree, mainly based on stomatogenic data, is given to show the phylogenetic relationships of some prostomatid genera as well as the hypothesized sistergroup relationship of colpodid and prostomatid ciliates. 相似文献

SUMMARY.
- 1 The combined effect of nitrate and phosphate concentrations on the yields of five selected strains of Stigeoclonium is demonstrated in a synthetic medium as well as in natural waters.
- 2 Increase of yield after addition of one nutrient depends on the concentration of the other. A graphic growth model based on the experiments in synthetic medium is presented, which allows prediction of yields at different combinations of nitrate and phosphorus concentrations.
- 3 In general, yields in natural waters before and after addition of nitrate and/or phosphate agree with the model. In some cases, other limiting factors appear to be involved.
- 4 The possible effects of nitrogen and phosphorus limitation on the phosphorus and nitrogen metabolism of the alga are discussed.
- 5 Neither an exponential model (Baule-Mitscherlich) nor a hyperbolic model adequately describe the interaction demonstrated between nitrogen and phosphorus limitation.

Macromorphology and encephalization (EI) of brains were compared in 58 Vespertilionid species, brain composition in 36 species: 46 or 27 species of Vespertilioninae, 8 or 5 species of Miniopterinae, 2 species of Kerivoulinae, and 2 species of Nyctophilinae. Subfamily differences were found in the extent of the cover of the mesencephalon. It is nearly fully covered in Kerivoula papulosa (Kerivoulinae), at least half covered (by the cerebellum) in Miniopterinae, and free (completely or nearly so) in Nyctophilinae and Vespertilioninae. In relative brain size, the Kerivoulinae are highest (average EI = 130), followed by the Miniopterinae (111), Nyctophilinae (102) and Vespertilioninae (95). The higher encephalization of Kerivoulinae and Miniopterinae is accompanied by a marked increase of relative size in cerebellum and striatum, and in Kerivoulinae, in hippocampus and neocortex as well. 相似文献
