Abstract. Prior studies revealed that the photoperiodic clock in Drosophila triauraria operates during the scotophase and the processes measuring scotophase are composed of two phases: the A phase which lasts 6–7 h from the onset of the scotophase and the B phase which follows the A phase. In this study the photoperiodic clock in this species was analysed by low-temperature pulses. Low temperature (5C) or a low-temperature (2C) pulse of 3 or 4 h decreased the induction of diapause when applied during the scotophase, but not when applied within the photophase. The low-temperature pulse showed two maxima of the effect, 0–4 h and 8–10 h after the onset of the scotophase, approximately corresponding to the A and B phases, respectively. It is considered that low temperature retards the time measurement processes operating during these phases. In the period which was rather insensitive to the diapause-preventing action of low temperature, i.e. 5-7h after the onset of the scotophase, substances or stimuli accumulated during the A phase may be converted to information required for operation of the machinery in the B phase. Experiments using a combination of low-temperature and light pulses suggested that low-temperature decreases the sensitivity to light, especially in the B phase.  相似文献

A remarkable new genus and two new species of Mantispidae (Neuroptera) are described from the Oriental region. Allomantispa Liu, Wu, Winterton & Ohl gen.n. , currently including A. tibetana Liu, Wu & Winterton sp.n. and A. mirimaculata Liu & Ohl sp.n. The new genus is placed in the subfamily Drepanicinae based on a series of morphological characteristics and on the results of total evidence phylogenetic analyses. Bayesian and Parsimony analyses were undertaken using three gene loci (CAD, 16S rDNA and COI) combined with 74 morphological characters from living and fossil exemplars of Mantispidae (17 genera), Rhachiberothidae (two genera) and Berothidae (five genera), with outgroup taxa from Dilaridae and Osmylidae. The resultant phylogeny presented here recovered a monophyletic Mantispidae with ?Mesomantispinae sister to the rest of the family. Relationships among Mantispidae, Rhachiberothidae and Berothidae support Rhachiberothidae as a separate family sister to Mantispidae. Within Mantispidae, Drepanicinae are a monophyletic clade sister to Calomantispinae and Mantispinae. In a combined analysis, Allomantispa gen.n. was recovered in a clade comprising Ditaxis McLachlan from Australia, and two fossil genera from the Palaearctic, ?Promantispa Panfilov (Kazakhstan; late Jurassic) and ?Liassochrysa Ansorge & Schlüter (Germany; Jurassic), suggesting a highly disjunct and relictual distribution for the family. Abstract. Recombinant inbred lines were produced from hybrids between diapausing and non-diapausing strains of Drosophila triauraria Bock & Wheeler by twenty generations of full-sib mating. The analysis of these inbred lines suggests that the difference in the photoperiodic response between the original diapausing and non-diapausing strains is due to genes at three or four loci and at least one of these loci is located on the X chromosome. The original diapausing strain and two inbred lines exhibited circadian peaks when subjected to the Nanda-Hamner protocol, although they had different critical daylengths. This suggests that critical daylength is modified independently of the circadian oscillation system in this species. On the other hand, diapause duration was correlated with critical daylength among the inbred lines and the original diapausing strain, suggesting that these two traits are under the control of the same genetic system.  相似文献

The Dichotomiflora group of Panicum contains NAD-malic enzyme(ME) species with centrifugal chloroplasts in Kranz cells, NAD-ME(F)species as well as NAD-ME species with centripetal chloroplastsin Kranz cells, NAD-ME (P) species. Many attributes of leafanatomy of 22 C4 Panicum species were investigated to identifydifferences among four different C4 subtypes, i.e. NADP-ME,NAD-ME(F), NAD-ME(P) and PEP-CK species grouped by the C4-aciddecarboxylating enzymes and chloroplast location in Kranz cellsin combination. Differences were found in the number of Kranzcells surrounding a large vein, and the number surrounding asmall vein, the interveinal distances, the proportion of leafcross sectional area occupied by epidermis plus sclerenchyma,by mesophyll cells, by Kranz cells, and by vascular bundles.There were also differences in the ratios of the area of thedifferent cell types. The number of the characters significantlydifferent between a respective pair of C4 subtypes was the largestbetween NAD-ME(F) and NAD-ME(P) species. In principal componentanalysis applied to 11 leaf anatomical characters, the differentC4 subtypes clustered into small groups, although the rangeof variations of PEP-CK species and those of NAD-ME(F) speciesoverlapped. The results were discussed in relation to taxonomyand ecological adaptation of Panicum species in the differentC4 subtypes. Relative warp analysis and eigenshape analysis were used to explore the patterns of variation of erratic shell shapes in and among six species of crevice-dwelling pterioid bivalves. The results of morphometric analyses revealed that a great deal of the variance of shell shape within each species can be reduced into principal components which display patterns of variation common to all species examined. In the species with striking variability, a few sets of principal components account for most of the variance of shell shape. On the other hand, in the species lacking considerable variability, several components contribute to form a given variety. Comparison of relative warp and eigenshape scores with centroid sizes indicates that the direction of ontogenetic shape change has been modified through evolution to produce adaptations to habitats such as crevices or the undersides of rocks.  © 2003 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2003, 79, 285–297.  相似文献

The first empirically supported phylogenetic hypothesis of relationships for the southern African endemic butterfly tribe Dirini is presented. Data derived from the morphology and ecology of the adults and immature stages (33 characters), and portions of the mitochondrial gene cytochrome oxidase I (COI) and the nuclear genes elongation factor 1α (EF1α) and wingless (WG) (totalling 1734 bp) were used to infer the relationships of the in‐group genera. An expanded molecular dataset using four genera from the Nymphalini and Satyrini to root the tree, and three genera from the Melanitini to test the monophyly of the tribe, was analysed using parsimony and Bayesian methods. Estimates of divergence times were calculated using two fossil calibrations under a relaxed molecular clock model. The monophyly of the tribe and each in‐group genus were strongly supported. Key findings are the sister‐taxon relationship of Aeropetes and Tarsocera, the apparent simultaneous or nearly simultaneous radiation of four lineages, the polyphyly of the species within Torynesis, and the apparent trans‐Atlantic dispersal of the ancestors of Manataria about 40 Ma. Estimates of divergence times indicate that the tribe has undergone two major radiations since its origin: the first when they left forest habitats in the mid–late Oligocene, shortly after the radiation of the grasses (Poaceae), and the second in the early‐middle Pliocene, coinciding with the aridification of southern Africa and the spread of conditions that favoured C4 grasses over the C3 grasses that dirine larvae prefer to eat. The high species diversity within the tribe appears to be partly a taxonomic artefact that may have resulted from the misinterpretation of climate‐related phenotypic variation within extant species. Relocation and breeding experiments should test this hypothesis.  相似文献

The first phylogenetic analysis of the genus Thyridosmylus Krüger is presented. All species from China were scored in a morphological analysis, along with extralimital species from India (Thyridosmylus pustulatus Kimmins) and Madagascar (Thyridosmylus marmoratus Fraser), and were compared with out‐group exemplars from Spilosmylus Kolbe, Thaumatosmylus Krüger and Osmylus Latreille. A monophyletic Thyridosmylus sister to Spilosmylus is confirmed based on this analysis, with the Malagasy Thyridosmylus marmoratus as sister to the Oriental Thyridosmylus species. Based on the results of this analysis, the biogeography of world Thyridosmylus is discussed. It is proposed that the genus originated in Gondwana no later than the Late Cretaceous (88 Ma) before the break‐up of the Madagascar–India continent. A new species, Thyridosmylus paralangii sp.n., is described from Guangxi Province, whereas two species [Thyridosmylus langii (McLachlan) and Thyridosmylus perspicillaris minor Kimmins] are recorded from China for the first time. Four synonyms are identified: Thyridosmylus laetus Yang et al. syn.n. , Thyridosmylus similaminor Yang syn.n. , Thyridosmylus vulgatus Yang syn.n. and Thyridosmylus mimoroides Yang syn.n. Bryophyte production and decomposition in tundra ecosystems   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
Bryophytes attain maximum relative importance in terms of biomass and production in the tundra biome. They contribute an average of 30% to the vegetation cover across a broad range of tundra sites, but often reach 100% cover in wetter and more protected situations. Figures for bryophyte phytomass span several orders of magnitude depending on severity of habitat conditions. Very high standing crops reflect organic matter accumulation due to low decomposition rates at the wettest sites. Initial annual loss rates are commonly below 10% in bryophyte-dominated habitats throughout the tundra. Bryophyte production ranges from less than 1 g m-2 yr-1 in polar desert, to more than 1000gm-2yr-l at wetter sites in the sub-Antarctic where a long growing season prevails.
However, many published values for tundra bryophyte production are based on suspect methodology and cannot be accurately compared between sites. The new generation of lightweight field-portable equipment for measuring gas exchange and microclimatic variables provides the potential for improving our knowledge of bryophyte productivity in relation to environmental factors in the tundra biome.
It is unfortunate, therefore, that the emphasis has shifted away from bryophyte autecological studies at important northern sites where increasing human impact is threatening this fragile biome type.  相似文献

1. Dung beetles (Scarabaeidae: Scarabaeinae) are integral parts of many ecosystems because of their role in decomposition of dung; particularly mammal dung, which forms the diet of both larvae and adults. 2. New Zealand dung beetles are unusual as they are flightless and evolved on islands with a highly depauperate mammal fauna and thus without the usual dung resource used by dung beetles elsewhere. The diet of New Zealand dung beetles is unknown. 3. We hypothesised (1) that the endemic dung beetle Saphobius edwardsi would be attracted to a broad range of food types, and (2) that S. edwardsi would be able to survive and reproduce on a range of dung types and puriri (Vitex lucens) humus. 4. Laboratory choice tests identified that S. edwardsi was attracted to a range of mammal, bird, invertebrate, and reptile dung types, but not to non‐dung food sources. Five‐month no‐choice tests found that beetle survival rates were lower for beetles fed with humus compared with those fed on mammal, bird, or invertebrate dung. None of the beetles reproduced. 5. This study suggests S. edwardsi have a strong preference for dung, and are likely to be broad dung generalists in their feeding behaviour.  相似文献
