The megasters of T. aurantium and T. citrina consist, in their mature stage, of spherasters and spheroxyasters respectively. A study of the ratio between the ray length and the diameter of the centre (R/C), which determines the megaster shape, has been carried out on spicules of different size.
While the small megasters of these two species have a similar shape, successive stages show in T. aurantium an isometric growth and in T. citrina an allometric growth with rays growing faster than the centre. The two species differ also in the mean size, size frequency distribution and number of rays of the asters. Differences in the mean total diameter and shape were also detected among spicules coming from different regions of the sponge body. Ecdysteroids are polyhydroxylated steroids that act as moulting hormones in arthropods and regulate several important life‐cycle processes. Phytoecdysteroids are ecdysteroid analogues produced by some plants that disrupt the growth and development of insects feeding on them, and can be perceived by the taste receptors of insects. The present study tested the hypothesis that the blood‐feeding tick Rhipicephalus sanguineus (Latreille, 1806) (Acari: Ixodidae) is capable of detecting phytoecdysteroids. By recording from the chelicerae, six phytoecdysteroids are tested: α‐ecdysone, 20‐hydroxyecdysone, ponasterone A, makisterone A, inokosterone and pterosterone. In unfed ticks, makisterone A and pterosterone elicit frequencies of neural impulses higher than in a negative control (a KCl solution at 10?3m ), with detection thresholds of 10?6m and 10?12m , respectively. The spike amplitudes of the responses to these compounds, and also for 20‐hydroxyecdysone and ponasterone A, are higher than in the control, indicating that a different neurone may be involved: perhaps a deterrent cell, as observed in insects. In fed ticks, only pterosterone at 10?4m remains active. In behavioural attachment assays, no difference is observed between electrophysiologically active compounds and the negative control. These results show the capability of R. sanguineus ticks to detect phytoecdysteroids, although they do not clarify the role of ecdysteroids in tick biology, for which further studies are required. 相似文献

1. Amphidromous shrimps live and breed in freshwater rivers and streams, but their larvae require development in sea water. Larvae may hatch upstream and then drift to the sea, although in some species females have been reported to migrate to the coast before larvae are released. Here, we tested the relative importance of larval drift and female migration in Macrobrachium ohione (Decapoda: Palaemonidae) in a distributary of the Mississippi River in Louisiana, U.S.A.
2. Newly hatched (stage-1) larvae are nonfeeding and will not moult to stage 2 (first feeding stage) without encountering salt water. A factorial experiment was conducted in the laboratory to test the effects on moulting to stage 2 of (i) time spent by stage-1 larvae in fresh water before (ii) exposure to and maintenance in water of different salinity. Larvae kept in fresh water for 1 or 3 days before a change to saline water at 6 or 10 ppt showed a greater frequency of moulting than those kept for longer (5 days) in fresh water or changed to less saline water (2 ppt). Non-moulting larvae died or were moribund within 11 days of hatching.
3. The relative abundance of stage-1 larvae was measured with plankton tows at two locations in the river c. 150 km apart, one near the sea and one upstream. Larval abundances near the sea were significantly greater than those upstream.
4. The results indicate that hatched larvae of M. ohione have a limited period in which to drift in fresh water before reaching water sufficiently saline to stimulate moulting to the first feeding stage. Female migrations may play an important role in delivering larvae of amphidromous species from large continental river systems in which distances to the sea are great, while larval drift alone may be sufficient in species living in short streams, like those found in many small mountainous tropical islands. 相似文献

This review examines our knowledge of the feeding ecology of the European Water shrew, Neomys fodiens. It describes and discusses the different methods which have been used to study the diets of Water shrews, from the first casual observations to the discovery of food caches and food remains in the wild, and the analysis of stomach contents and faecal pellets of trapped animals. These studies have revealed that Water shrews feed on a variety of invertebrate and vertebrate prey from tiny freshwater dip-teran larvae to sizable fish and frogs. Although aquatic prey are seen to be the major dietary component in most studies, terrestrial prey are also important and may be eaten in an equal proportion. Laboratory studies have increased our knowledge of the foraging behaviour of Water shrews but there is still much to be learnt, especially about underwater prey location. 相似文献
