The leaves of Chenopodium ambrosioides L. [Chenopodiaceae] ('mastruz') have been indicated for the treatment of several diseases, among which the cancer. There are no results focusing the effect of C. ambrosioides treatment on tumor development in vivo. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of treatment with C. ambrosioides on Ehrlich tumor development. Swiss mice were treated by intraperitoneal route (i.p.) with hydroalcoholic extract from leaves of C. ambrosioides (5 mg/kg) or with PBS (control group) 48 h before or 48 h later the Ehrlich tumor implantation. The tumor cells were implanted on the left footpad (solid tumor) or in the peritoneal cavity (ascitic tumor). To determine the solid tumor growth, footpad was measured each 2 days until the fourteenth day, when the feet were weighed. Ascitic tumor development was evaluated after 8 days of tumor implantation by quantification of the ascitic fluid volume and tumor cell number. The i.p. administration of C. ambrosioides extract before or after the tumor implantation significantly inhibited the solid and ascitic Ehrlich tumor forms. This inhibition was observed in ascitic tumor cell number, in the ascitic volume, in the tumor-bearing foot size and foot weight when compared to control mice. The treatments also increased the survival of tumor-bearing mice. In conclusion, C. ambrosioides has a potent anti-tumoral effect which was evident with a small dose and even when the treatment was given two days after the tumor implantation. This effect is probably related with anti-oxidant properties of C. ambrosioides. 相似文献

Two strains of Bacillus, one from a culture collection (B. subtilis ATCC 6633) and a wild type (Bacillus sp. UFLA 817CF) isolated during coffee fermentation in the south of Minas Gerais, Brazil, were evaluated in relation to secretion
of alkaline proteases. The strains were grown on nutrient broth, nutrient broth with sodium caseinate and nutrient broth with
three different concentrations of cheese whey powder for 72 h. Samples were collected at 24-h intervals to evaluate the proteolytic
activity, protein content and cell population. Maximum protease activity was observed after 24-h growth for both the microorganisms,
a period that coincided with the end of the exponential phase. The specific activity values were, respectively, 839.8 U/mg
for B. subtilis ATCC 6633 and 975.9 U/mg for Bacillus sp. UFLA 817CF. The 60% saturation presented the best results for specific protease activity in all the growth culture media
tested with B.
sp. UFLA 817CF. Bacillus sp. UFLA 817CF showed highest enzymatic activity at pH 9.0 and 40°C in the three culture media tested. The protease obtained
from culture of the wild Bacillus strain presented stability at pH 7.0 and considerable heat stability at 40°C and 50°C, and could be an alternative for the

Sporotrichosis is a generally cutaneous, granulomatous, chronic and benign infection. Less frequently the disease may affect the joints. Articular involvement is usually characterized by monoarthritis in the absence of systemic symptoms, generally preceded by skin lesions, and frequently affects immunosuppressed individuals. We describe here the case of a healthy patient presenting knee arthritis without skin lesions, diagnosed as sporotrichosis, and treated with oral itraconazole. Serology used in this case was an invaluable tool for the diagnosis of sporotrichosis arthritis lacking skin lesions. 相似文献

Actinobacteria isolates from Brazilian Cerrado soil were evaluated for their ability to produce enzymes of the cellulolytic and xylanolytic complex using lignocellulose residual biomass. Preliminary semiquantitative tests, made in Petri plates containing carboxymethylcellulose and beechwood xylan, indicated 11 potential species producing enzymes, all belonging to the genus Streptomyces. The species were subsequently grown in pure substrates in submerged fermentation and analyzed for the production of enzymes endoglucanase, β-glucosidase, endoxylanase, and β-xylosidase. The best results were obtained for endoxylanase enzyme production with Streptomyces termitum(UFLA CES 93). The strain was grown on lignocellulose biomass (bagasse, straw sugarcane, and cocoa pod husk) that was used in natura or acid pretreated. The medium containing sugarcane bagasse in natura favored the production of the endoxylanase that was subsequently optimized through an experimental model. The highest enzyme production 0.387?U?mL?1, (25.8 times higher), compared to the lowest value obtained in one of the trials, was observed when combining 2.75% sugar cane bagasse and 1.0?g?L?1 of yeast extract to the alkaline medium (pH 9.7). Epidemiological evidence suggests that sleep duration and poor sleep are associated with mortality, as well as with a wide range of negative health outcomes. However, few studies have examined the association between sleep and self-rated health, particularly through the combination of sleep complaints. The objective of this study was to examine whether self-rated health is associated with sleep complaints, considering the combination of sleep duration, insomnia, and sleep sufficiency. This cross-sectional study was performed in the 18 largest public hospitals in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. A total of 2518 female nurses answered a self-filled multidimensional questionnaire. The adjusted odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) estimated the chance of poor self-rated health in the presence of different combinations of sleep duration and quality. Compared with women who reported adequate sleep duration with no sleep quality complaints (reference group), the odds ratios (95% CI) for poor self-rated health were 1.79 (1.27–2.24) for those who reported only insufficient sleep, 1.85 (0.94–3.66) for only a short sleep duration, and 3.12 (1.94–5.01) for only insomnia. Compared with those who expressed all three complaints (short sleep duration, insomnia, and insufficient sleep), the odds ratio for poor self-rated health was 4.49 (3.25–6.22). Differences in the magnitude of the associations were observed, depending on the combination of sleep complaints. Because self-rated health is a consistent predictor of morbidity, these results reinforce the increasing awareness of the role of sleep in health and disease. Our findings contribute to the recognition of sleep as a public health matter that deserves to be better understood and addressed by policymakers. 相似文献

The mechanisms that lead to the onset of organoselenium intoxication are still poorly understood. Therefore, in the present study, we investigated the effect of acute administration of 3‐methyl‐1‐phenyl‐2‐(phenylseleno)oct‐2‐en‐1‐one on some parameters of oxidative stress and on the activity of creatine kinase (CK) in different brain areas and on the behaviour in the open field test of 90‐day‐old male rats. Animals (n = 10/group) were treated intraperitoneally with a single dose of the organoselenium (125, 250 or 500 µg kg?1), and after 1 h of the drug administration, they were exposed to the open field test, and behaviour parameters were recorded. Immediately after they were euthanized, cerebral cortex, hippocampus and cerebellum were dissected for measurement of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), carbonyl, sulfhydryl, catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and CK activity. Our results showed that the dose of 500 µg kg?1 of the organoselenium increased the locomotion and rearing behaviours in the open field test. Moreover, the organochalcogen enhanced TBARS in the cerebral cortex and cerebellum and increased the oxidation of proteins (carbonyl) only in the cerebral cortex. Sulfhydryl content was reduced in all brain areas, CAT activity enhanced in the hippocampus and reduced in the cerebellum and SOD activity increased in all brain structures. The organoselenium also inhibited CK activity in the cerebral cortex. Therefore, changes in motor behaviour, redox state and energy homeostasis in rats treated acutely with organoselenium support the hypotheses that the brain is a potential target for the organochalcogen action. Bentazon removal by Ganoderma lucidum cultured in liquid and solid state conditions was compared in this work. In solid state cultures, the fungus produced both
ligninolytic enzymes, namely laccase and Mn peroxidase. In liquid cultures, the main ligninolytic enzyme produced was laccase.
In both types of cultures bentazon improved the production of laccase without significant alteration in the production of
Mn peroxidase. In solid state cultures, where high levels of both laccase and Mn peroxidase activities were found, the fungus
was more resistant to the action of the herbicide (50 mM in solid state cultures against 20 mM in liquid cultures) and more
efficient in removing bentazon (90% removal against 55% in liquid cultures after 10 days of cultivation). Furthermore, the
solid state culture filtrates were more efficient in the in vitro degradation of bentazon than the liquid culture filtrates.
These observations suggest that both enzymes, laccase and Mn peroxidase, are involved in bentazon degradation. The results
further suggest that solid state cultures of Ganoderma lucidum could be useful in strategies designed to reduce environmental contamination by bentazon. 相似文献
