Independence of locational fixes, to reduce the effects of autocorrelation, is often deemed a prerequisite for estimation of home range size and utilization when using data derived from telemetric studies. Three methods of estimating times to independence using movement estimates, along with a statistical method of estimating the level of autocorrelation of locational data, were examined for two species of mammal. Attempts to achieve statistically independent data by subsampling resulted in severe redundancy in the data and significant underestimation of range size and rates of movement. Even a sample interval of one fix per week did not guarantee independence and also resulted in underestimation of range size despite range asymptotes being reached. It would appear that the correct strategy for the best possible estimation of range size and use from telemetry would be the repeated use of as short a sampling interval as is possible over an extended period of time. Statistical methods to measure levels of autocorrelation in locational data may be useful for comparing rates of range use between different populations of the same species or between species, as long as the same sample interval is used.  相似文献

Summary Roots, stems, or leaves of American (Panax quinquefolium) and Korean (Panax ginsing) ginseng were grown as callus or supension tissue cultures. Tissue cultures ofP. ginseng would occasionally form plantlets. The fundamental chemical composition, inorganic analysis, and saponin (panaquilin) content of American and Korean ginseng plants and tissue cultures were determined. The crude saponin content is very similar to, but approximately one-half (1.3%, fresh weight) of that present in ginseng roots. Two-dimensional thin layer chromatographic analysis revealed minor differences in the panaquilins present in American and Korean ginseng tissue cultures. The sapogenin, panaxadiol, was isolated from Korean ginseng callus.  相似文献

1. Mycobacterium tuberculosis BCG was usually grown in glycerol-asparagine-casein hydrolysate medium. A soluble fraction was obtained from the cells with aq. 50% ethanol; unbound lipids were then removed and the cells were treated with dilute alkali to give, after acidification, an alkali-extractable fraction and an insoluble fraction. On occasion, lipopolysaccharides were obtained by extracting with phenol or dimethyl sulphoxide instead of alkali. The soluble fraction contained, particularly after long extraction, polysaccharide containing mainly glucose, in addition to trehalose and monosaccharides and their derivatives. The alkali-extractable fraction contained polysaccharides containing mannose, glucose, arabinose, galactose and 6-O-methylglucose. These could be resolved into three fractions of markedly different molecular size. It is argued that the high-molecular-weight materials originated from the outside of the cell envelope and the medium-molecular-weight materials from a middle layer of the envelope. 2. Exposure of the growing cells to isoniazid, usually at 1 or 10mug/ml for 6-12h, increased the total cell carbohydrate, mainly due to an increase in trehalose and in insoluble glucan. It also facilitated the extraction of polysaccharide into the medium and the soluble fraction. This produced about a 25% decrease in the amount of carbohydrate in the alkaline-extractable fraction, mainly due to a fall in glucose, arabinose and 6-O-methylglucose. The decrease was confined to polysaccharides of large and medium molecular weight. When intact lipopolysaccharides were extracted, their amount was also decreased by isoniazid. 3. Substitution of ammonium sulphate for asparagine and casein hydrolysate in the medium, so that glycerol was the sole carbon source, decreased the carbohydrate accumulation brought about by isoniazid but did not alter its effect on polysaccharide extraction. 4. Growth with (14)C-labelled substrates showed that glycerol provided two to four times as much of the cell carbon as did asparagine, when both were present. Under these conditions isoniazid inhibited the incorporation of carbon atoms from asparagine into the cells, but had little effect on the total incorporation from glycerol. These experiments also showed that the effect of isoniazid on alkali-extractable polysaccharides was due to their loss to the soluble fraction and external medium. 5. It is suggested that isoniazid inhibits a pathway (probably the synthesis of mycolic acid) involved in the formation of the cell envelope, and that this inhibition results in some re-channelling of intermediates into carbohydrate synthesis and in some loss of polysaccharides through damage to the envelope.  相似文献

Scaphopods (tusk shells) are infaunal marine predators that occur at locally high densities in coastal and deep‐sea mud habitats, and as consumers of foraminifera they are important in carbon cycling. We investigated oxygen metabolism and burying behavior of the scaphopod Rhabdus rectius and its responses to altered temperatures. These are the first measurements of oxygen uptake rates for any member of this taxonomic class. In response to elevated temperatures, oxygen uptake rates increased, but the ability of animals to bury themselves in sediment was compromised. Female scaphopods were significantly larger than males and, when corrected for body mass, oxygen uptake rates were consistently higher for female individuals than for males. This is consistent with previous anecdotal observations of females in other scaphopod species being larger and potentially more active. In conditions of declining oxygen availability, individuals of Rhabdus rectius showed strong oxyregulatory ability by maintaining the same oxygen uptake rate displayed in normoxic conditions. The ability to maintain normal metabolic functioning even in conditions of oxygen limitation would benefit a species living in a benthic environment that may be prone to temporary or transient anoxic events. Yet the decrease in normal escape response in moderately elevated temperatures indicates these animals may be at risk from rising sea temperatures.  相似文献

The endemic New Zealand ground wētā (Hemiandrus sp. ‘promontorius’) has a Naturally Uncommon conservation status. This is because of the paucity of information on its density and distribution. Here, the biology, density and distribution of a population of this wētā found in and around vineyards in the Awatere Valley, Marlborough was studied. Wētā density was assessed in vineyards, paddocks and shrublands in this valley. Soil moisture, penetration resistance, pH and organic matter were recorded at locations with and without wētā. Wētā density in vineyards was significantly higher than in either paddocks or shrub habitats. In vineyards, the density of this insect was significantly higher under-vines than in the inter-rows. Higher numbers of this wētā were found in moist soils that required lower force to burrow. Females laid an average of 55 eggs between March and April, which hatched in September. These findings highlight the intersection between agriculture and conservation.  相似文献

Distinguishing morphologically cryptic taxa, by definition, requires genetic data such as DNA sequences. However, DNA sequences may not be obtained easily for taxa from remote sites. Here we provide the details of a high-resolution melt-curve-based method using taxon-specific primers that can distinguish two taxa of Adélie penguins, and that will be usable in Antarctica when combined with some of the newly developed field-deployable thermal cyclers. We suggest that the wider adoption of field-deployable polymerase-chain-reaction-based techniques will enable faster assignation of haplotype to individuals in situ, and so allow the targeting of observations and sample collection to specimens relevant to the research question. Targeting individuals will also reduce the need to repeatedly handle animals and reduce the time and travel required to complete field work.  相似文献
