The influence of temperature on the diurnal activity of five species of aphidophagous lady beetles (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) was investigated between 0700 and 1900 h in chili (Capsicum annuum L.) agroecosystems and neighboring vegetation (goose grass, Eleusine indica L.). The lady beetle species observed were Menochilus sexmaculatus Fabricius, Coelophora inaequalis F., Coccinella transversalis F., Harmonia octomaculata F. and Coelophora bissellata Mulsant. More lady beetles (of all species) were found during cooler periods (at 0700, 0900, 1100, and 1900 h). The diurnal pattern of lady beetle adult was temperature dependent. On chili plants, numbers were higher at temperatures between 22 to 30 °C (at 0700, 0900, 1100 and 1900 h) and numbers decreased when temperatures were above 30 °C. When temperature was above 30 °C under the chili plant canopy, numbers were higher in neighboring goose grass, where temperatures were cooler (< 30 °C). Numbers of all species were negative correlated between chili plant and goose grass.  相似文献

Many traits, such as wing dimorphism, paedomorphosis, and cyclomorphosis vary dichotomously. Such dimorphisms are maintained in part because of a trade-off between components of fitness: for example, in insects, the flightless morph cannot migrate but has a greater fecundity than the flight-capable morph. Several recent theoretical studies have analyzed the evolution of dichotomous traits, assuming that each morph can be characterized by a discrete syndrome of characters. Consideration of the genetic basis of dimorphism suggests that this assumption is incorrect. In this paper, I report a test of this assumption using the wing-dimorphic sand cricket, Gryllus firmus. It is predicted that, rather than remaining constant, the fecundity of macropterous (long-winged, flight-capable) females will decrease as the proportion of macropterous females in the population or family increases. This prediction is supported by fecundity data from lines selected for high and low proportions of macroptery and by sib analysis. Thus, models that seek to predict the evolution of dichotomous traits should take into account the likelihood that values of components of fitness, such as fecundity, may be related to their frequencies in the population.  相似文献

Synopsis Stunting in freshwater fish populations may be due to low availability of one or more prey components within their diet. If the limiting prey constitute a trophic level (i.e. zooplankton, benthos, or fish), we define the phenomenon as a trophic bottleneck. Growth of a non-stunted population of yellow perch, Perca flavescens, was simulated using an allocation model based on reported ontogenetic shifts in diet (planktivory to benthivory to piscivory). The model was then perturbed by limiting the available ration individually for each of the three feeding types. The resulting simulated growth curves all reflected lower growth rates than the unperturbed state and the shape of the curve differed between the limited food types. Only the reduced benthic ration produced a simulated growth that matched that observed for the stunted yellow perch of Lac Hertel (Québec). To test the hypothesis that benthic ration was limiting growth in Lac Hertel, all the fish species in the lake were sampled for diet composition and total length at age. We predicted that species feeding upon benthic invertebrates should exhibit the slow growth characteristic of stunting (based on the results of the allocation model). Of the seven fish species found in Lac Hertel, four were stunted: yellow perch, pumpkinseed, Lepomis gibbosus, rock bass, Ambloplites rupestris, and brown bullhead, Ictalurus nebulosus. Three species were non-stunted: northern pike, Esox lucius, golden shiner, Notemigonus crysoleucas, and white sucker, Catostomus commersoni. All stunted species fed on benthic invertebrates and all non-stunted species, except the white sucker, did not feed upon benthos. The prediction of the allocation model was thus supported.  相似文献

Three carbohydrate-binding proteins (Mr 35 000, 16 000 and 13 500) were isolated from extracts of mouse 3T3 fibroblasts by affinity chromatography on polyacrylamide beads to which was covalently bound the ligand 6-aminohexyl 4-beta-D-galactosyl-2-acetamido-2-deoxy-beta-D-glucopyranoside. None of these proteins bind to polyacrylamide beads coupled with either 6-aminohexanol or 6-aminohexyl beta-D-galactopyranoside. Therefore they appear to be carbohydrate-binding proteins specific for galactose-terminated glycoconjugates. A carbohydrate-binding protein was also purified from extracts of human foreskin fibroblasts. This protein (Mr 35000) may represent the human counterpart of the mouse protein of similar Mr and binding properties.  相似文献

Hepatic sterol carrier protein-2 (SCP2) and sterol carrier protein-X (SCPx) levels in normal and in mutant Niemann-Pick Type C mice were determined by immunoblotting with antiserum against rat SCP2. A 14-kDa protein (SCP2) was detected in the cytosol fraction and a 58-kDa protein (SCPx) was found in both cytosolic and organellar fractions. Expression of hepatic SCPx protein was developmentally regulated in a sex-specific pattern. The amounts of organelle-associated SCPx increased 4-fold during sexual development of normal males but decreased dramatically during development of normal females. Levels of hepatic SCP2 increased much less dramatically during sexual maturation of normal males and females. Adult Niemann-Pick Type C mice were deficient in both hepatic SCPx and SCP2. The deficit in SCPx in affected males reflected a failure to increase hepatic SCPx levels during sexual maturation. In affected males SCPx remained at levels found in immature mice. Affected male and female mice were also unable to maintain levels of hepatic SCP2. The level of SCP2 was near normal in affected immature males and subnormal in affected immature females. During sexual maturation hepatic SCP2 declined in affected animals.  相似文献

Clinal variation in life histories can be genetically based, resulting from selection imposed by different environments, or it may be due to the differential expression of phenotypically plastic traits. We examined the cline in voltinism in the egg-diapausing cricket Allonemobius socius, with populations spanning the switch from a univoltine to a bivoltine phenology. A common garden experiment was employed, using environments that mimicked photoperiod and temperature conditions found in the field. There were only small differences in development time among populations, and the difference in phenology observed in the field is likely due to clinal variation in the length of the growing season. We found large genetically-based differences in the reaction norm for egg diapause that were further magnified by environmental cues. The synergism of genetic and environmental effects was an example of cogradient selection. In the zone of transition between phenologies, voltinism appeared to be a conditional strategy, rather than a genetic polymorphism. First-generation females from this area can lay either direct-developing or diapause eggs depending on the likelihood that a second generation will have sufficient time to develop. For this species, the cline in voltinism is the result of a combination of environmental effects on development, and genetic and environmental influences on egg diapause propensity.  相似文献

Summary Spatial and temporal variability in environmental conditions can significantly influence fluctuations in body size if the environmental heterogeneity gives rise to variable size dependent mortality rates, or dispersal between sites incurs a reproductive cost. Temporal variability has a greater effect than spatial variability. These conclusions are derived from a model based on the assumption that the innate capacity for increase, r m , is a suitable fitness measure. The limitations of this model are discussed and an alternative approach using the parent-offspring regression presented. It is suggested that models based upon the latter approach are more appropriate for investigations of the evolution of traits (showing continuous variation) in variable environments because it does not require the assumption that some fitness measure is being optimized and because it may give more insight into the rates of change of the character.  相似文献

Wing-dimorphic insects are excellent subjects for a study of the evolution of dispersal since the nondispersing brachypterous morph is easily recognized. The purpose of this paper is to develop a framework within which the evolution of wing dimorphism can be understood. A review of the literature indicates that the presence or absence of wings may be controlled by a single locus, two-allele genetic system or a polygenic system. Both types of inheritance can be subsumed within a general threshold model. An increase in the frequency of a brachypterous morph in a population may result from an increased relative fitness of this morph or the emigration of the macropterous type. The abundance of wing-polymorphic species argues for an increased fitness of the brachypterous form. An analysis of the life-history characteristics of 22 species of insects indicates that the brachypterous morph is both more fecund and reproduces earlier that the macropterous morph. Unfortunately, data on males are generally lacking. It is suggested that suppression of wing production results when some hormone, perhaps juvenile hormone, exceeds a threshold value during a critical stage of development. Further, it is known that in the monomorphically winged species Oncopeltus fasciatus both flight and oviposition are regulated by the titer of juvenile hormone. These observations are used to construct a possible pathway for the evolution of wing dimorphism. This suggests that evolution to a dimorphic species requires both an increase in the rate of production of the wing suppressing hormone and a change in the threshold level at which wing and wing-muscle production are suppressed. The stage in this evolutionary sequence that an organism will reach depends on the stability of the habitat.  相似文献
